Cyclone Amphan originated in the Bay of Bengal in May 2020 and caused widespread destruction in West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh. It was the strongest super cyclonic storm since the 1999 Odisha cyclone, with wind speeds of up to 260 km/h. The governments of affected areas took several safety precautions, including evacuating coastal residents and suspending transportation. After making landfall, Cyclone Amphan destroyed homes and infrastructure, uprooted trees, and cut off power and communications for millions. International and local organizations provided relief in the form of food, supplies, and damage assessments. The disaster highlighted the need to make communities more resilient to frequent climate change-related extreme weather events.

3. DISASTER AND ITS TYPES
• A disaster occurs when a hazard impacts on people, animals and
environment.
• It is a sudden event that disrupts the functioning of a community or
society and causes huge human, material, economic and
environmental losses.
4. NATURAL DISASTER
an event by the natural processes of the Earth that causes
widespread destruction to the environment and loss of life.
Example- Tsunami, cyclone, earthquake, volcanic eruptions.
MAN-MADE DISASTER
man made disasters are caused by the activities of humans. it
results in huge loss of life and property.
Example- Forest fires, oil spills, etc.
5. CYCLONE – CAUSES OF
CYCLONE
• cyclone is a weather system in
which winds rotate inwardly to an
area of low atmospheric pressure,
which results in atmospheric
disturbance by powerful wind
blowing.
• They mainly occur in tropical and
temperate regions.
• It is known as Hurricanes in north
Atlantic and in north pacific
• Cyclone is called ‘typhoons’ in
western North Pacific around the
Philippines, Japan, and China.
6. CAUSES
when convection causes warm,
moist air above the ocean to
rise. They begin as a group of
storms when the water gets
hotter. The Coriolis effect made
by the Earth's
rotation causes the winds to
rotate.
Great Bhola Cyclone is the
most severe cyclone on the list
is the deadliest tropical
cyclone ever.
7. Causes …
• Earthquakes can be caused by the shifting of tectonic plates.
Sometimes increased mining in an area, like natural gas drilling,
can cause earthquakes. Tsunamis are a result of underwater
earthquakes.
• Tornadoes which are really dangerous are often formed by the
interaction of high and low-pressure air and these have proved
to be really dangerous as well as devastating for many
communities
• Air pressure, high and low determines whether or not we have
thunderstorms, rain and hurricanes. Flooding and high winds
are caused by the crashing together of low and high-pressure
air. Damage caused by flooding and hurricanes along coastal
cities and towns can be really difficult to overcome for their
8. Cyclones in INDIA
• Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Phailin was the most intense tropical cyclone to make
landfall in India since the 1999 Odisha cyclone with the speed of 260km/h.
• Cyclone Amphan was a powerful tropical cyclone which led to the destruction of lives and
property in the states of Odisha and West Bengal .Cyclone Amphan was the first pre-
monsoon super cyclone of this century and emerged from the Bay of Bengal in May 2020.
• It is considered the first super cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal since the 1999 Odisha
cyclone.
• North Odisha Coast faced the maximum impact after Amphan makes landfall. Its highest
speed was 260km/h.
12. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR CYCLONES AND
PRECAUTIONS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT
The following are the steps to take in a cyclone:
•Be alert to changing weather conditions.
•Listen to radio/TV for the latest information.
•Look for approaching storms.
•seek shelter immediately.
As per an article published by ‘the telegraph online’ published
on 18th may 2020
The CM urged people living in coastal areas of the state to
exercise caution over the next few days.
13. They have instructed officials to convince people (living in the coastal areas) to
shift to cyclone centres, as was done during Cyclone Bulbul, while keeping in
mind the lockdown protocol.
” all precautionary steps, including evacuation of people from coastal areas,
have been taken to deal with any eventuality arising out of cyclone Amphan,
which is fast approaching the the state.”
Ports were cleared and their operations suspended along the Bay of Bengal,
while ferry service along major routes in Bangladesh was suspended by
the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation.
The Shramik train service for migrant workers was halted in both states for up
to four days, with service expected to be curtailed in the storm.
15. SAFETY MEASURES BY GOVT. TO
COMBAT CYCLONE
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs
1,500 crore for the relief and rehabilitation of
people affected by Cyclone Amphan in West
Bengal and Odisha and assured the states of
more support after conducting separate aerial
surveys with chief ministers Mamata Banerjee
and Naveen Patnaik.
At the review meeting with Mamata Banerjee
in basirhat after the survey, PM Narendra Modi
declared that Rs 2 lakh each will be given to
families of the deceased from the Prime
Minister’s National Relief Fund. Those injured
will get Rs 50,000 each.
16. ORGANIZATIONS
WORKING TO HELP
• Bharat Sevashram Sangha,
Ramakrishna Mission and the
Confederation of Indian Industries (CII)
have started providing cooked and dry
foods to the people who have lost
everything.
• Sneh Abhiyan, Youth
Development Project, Odisha
Viklang Manch and Young India,
grassroots- based organisations
working in these areas have helped
the state government in the
evacuation process, and are
working in Odisha to assess the
damaging and identify families in
needs amongst the vulnerable
communities.
18. Lesson learnt
• The lessons we learnt by the
natural disasters and the cyclone
Amphan are :
These disaster can occur frequently
due to climate change.
We have to make villages more
resistant to these disasters so that
many people will not have to lose
everything .
19. CONCLUSION
• Affected Regions by cyclone amphan:West Bengal,
Odisha and Bangladesh.
• Amphan is the second pre-monsoon cyclone to form in
the Bay of Bengal in two years. The first one was
Cyclone Fani.
• The pre-monsoon period is generally considered to be
unsupportive for the formation of tropical cyclones.
• Amphan made landfall on Wednesday, lashing coastal
areas with ferocious wind and rain. The storm is
weakening as it moves north into Bhutan.
• Thousands of trees were uprooted in the gales,
electricity and telephone lines brought down and
houses flattened.
• Many of Kolkata's roads are flooded and its 14 million
people without power.
• Disaster not attended properly can cause severe damage .
• Properly educating people about disasters, different forms
of disasters and do’s and don’ts for disasters.
