• This is a detailed layout/ list of activities or tasks to be executed by an
institution in a specified period of time.

4. WORK PLANS
A work plan is a written agreement outlining what is to be
achieved over a specified period. It takes into account the
priorities and focus of the institution and refining them and
interpreting them into more specific objectives and methods
of implementation. In a school set up, the work planning
process is done at three levels namely Institutional,
Departmental and Individual levels.
5. ANNUAL WORK PLAN
It is a planning and management instrument which
provides a framework for planning the work to be
undertaken by an institution in a year. It identifies the
problems to be solved, makes them finite, precise and
verifiable as objectives. It outlines the actions to be
taken and resources to be expended in order to
achieve the objectives. It is also used by funding
agencies as a document for justifying the release of
funds.

Prepare
1) an Annual Departmental work plan
indicating all relevant components
2) An individual work plan for either
HOD or Senior Teacher.
7. a) Departmental work plan
This is an effective tool for assessing the
performance of the Department and should
have the following features:
•Long term objectives which are derived
from the strategic plan.
•Annual objectives which indicate what will
be achieved within one year. The annual
objectives should state what is to be done
and why.

• Appropriate targets that are SMART.
(Specific, Measurable,Achievable, Realistic
and Time bound) must be set.
• Schedule of activities which shows the
sequence of activities for each target. This
should provide specific information on
activities in terms of duration and dates.
• List of all departments and organizations
that needed to contribute to the success of
each program or activity.

•List of all the types and number of staff
required in the department.
•Estimates of the quantity and cost of
materials, supplies, equipment and services.
•Assumptions – These are factors that are
crucial to the successful undertaking of the
activities and accomplishing of the
objectives but are outside the institutions
control. E.g. adequate funding.
10. conclusion
As an effective Head of Department or Senior teacher, ensure that you
prepare Annual work plans and Actions in good time and all the time.
11. Individual work plan
This is an individuals program of activities to be
undertaken in one year. An individual work plan can be
derived from the departmental work plan. The
prominent features are as indicated below:
• Name of the owner of the work plan
• Department under which the owner of the work
plan works.
• Job title

•Key result areas and principal accountabilities
should be as presented in the job description.
•SMART targets that are set from the principal
accountabilities.
•Sequence of activities that will be undertaken
for each target
