5. STUDY ON HOUSEHOLD PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT AND ITS
AWARENESS
INTRODUCTION
Many of the human activities invariably produce some wastes. Owing
to the modern lifestyle patterns combined with population explosion,
the quantity of waste generated has multiplied several times and has
grown beyond the carrying capacity of earth’s ecosystem to recycle the
wastes. Modern day wastes include high proportions of non-degradable
materials such as plastics (Desa et al. 2011). Last 50-60 years have
witnessed the replacement of wood and metal with plastic in many
households (Hopewell et al.2009).Plastics cause threat to human and
environmental health, and plastic waste management is a major
challenge these days .
The present study is about household plastic waste management and
awareness regarding the same among people.

9. 2. PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT
1. Major plastic waste: In 12 families plastic covers and in 13 families, milk covers form
the major share.
2. Formal waste disposal system: 11 families have a formal waste disposal systemand 14
do not.
3. Agency which collects plastic waste: Panchayat
4. 14 families do not have any waste disposal systemand they are disposing their waste
by various means such as burning, discarding in the open space, and burying in the back
yard.
5. Lack of space and time for waste disposal are the reasons pointed out for the crude
methods adopted by the relevant categories.
3. AWARENESS AND ATTITUDES ON PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT
6. 14 families think that the waste disposal method is a problem in their area and 11 do
not think so.
7. 11 are satisfied about the current waste disposal mechanism.
8. Only 3 are associated with any awareness/ training program and 22 are not.
9. 18 are satisfied and 7 are not satisfied with the quality of the environment.
10. Only 6 are aware on the importance of waste minimization and 19 only to some extent.
11. 15 are ready to recycle plastic waste and 10 are ready to adopt waste reduction
practices.
12. 14 prefer segregation of waste as a solution to the plastic waste management and 11
find that creating awareness for waste management practices could be a better
solution.
