BE ECO-POSITIVE
– an initiative by TERI
Are you too sleeping over
environmental issues ?
Are you eco-friendly ?
•What is your daily average water consumption ?
•Do you conserve paper in your own little ways?
•Do you still use plastic bags?
•How many trees have you planted so far?
•How do you come to school?
•Is your vehicle running on CNG ?
•Do you use LED / CFL lamps at Home / office ?
IN THE LAST 50 YEARS ALONE, MAN
HAS CAUSED SIGNIFICANT

Article published in the magazine
"Crónicas de los Tiempos“, in
April 2002.
 This is the year 2070
I have just turned 50, but I my
appearance is of somebody of 85.

I suffer from serious kidney
problems, because I do not drink
enough water.
I'm afraid I do not have
much time left to live.
I am one of the oldest people
in this society.
I remember when I was a child of 5.
There were lots of trees in the parks, houses with beautiful
gardens, and I could enjoy having a shower .
Everything was very different then.
Nowadays we use towels with mineral oil to clean our skin.
Before, women had beautiful hair.
Then, my father washed his car with water.
Now, my son does not believe that water could be wasted that
way.
Now, we have to shave our heads
to keep them clean
without the use of water.
I remember there were
SAVE WATER
warnings on outside posters,
radio and TV, but nobody
paid attention. We thought
that water
was to last forever.
Now, all the rivers, lakes, dams
and underground water beds are
either dry or contaminated.
Assaults at gun point on the streets for a can of water are very
common.
Food is 80% synthetic.
Before, the recommended quantity of water to drink
for an adult was 8 glasses a day.
Nowadays, I am only allowed half a glass.
We now have to wear disposable clothing.
The outside appearance of the population is horrible: wrinkled,
emaciated bodies, due to dehydration, full of sores caused by
ultraviolet radiations.
Skin cancer, gastrointestinal infections
are the main causes of death.
Due to the excessive drying of the skin young people of 20 look like
40.
Scientists investigate, but there's
no solution to the problem.
The morphology of spermatozoa in many men has changed.
As a consequence, babies are
born with deficiencies,
mutations and physical
deformities.
Government makes us pay for the air we breathe.
The average life expectancy is 35 years.
In some countries, where there are still some green zones crossed by
rivers, these are guarded by heavy armed soldiers.
Water became a very
coveted treasure, more
precious
than gold and diamonds.
Where I live, there are no trees, because it seldom rains.
When it happens to register some precipitation, it is of acid rain.
We were warned to look after the environment, but nobody cared.
When my son asks me to talk about my youth, I tell him about the
green fields, the beauty of the flowers, the rain, to drink all the water
we could, and how healthy people were.
Then, I feel a lump in my throat!
He asks: Why there is no water?
I cannot help feeling guilty,
because
I belong to the generation who
contributed to the destruction of
the environment or simply did
not take into account all the
warning signs.
Now our children
pay a very high price!
How I would like to go back and make mankind understand…
...that we still had time to save our Planet
Earth.
This show was made by a
very talented person, named
Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam
Don’t be scared
Little initiatives taken by all of us will help
in saving nature and will ensure a better
survival for us and our future
generations.
Things we can do to help:
Conserve Energy
1. Switch off the lights / fans when not in use
2. Change the lighting system at home
3. Use some ancient ways to keep ambient conditions
in summers / winters : Like – paint the roof with
slaked lime, place inverted pots on the roof, use
slightly tinted glasses on the windows ,grow
creepers on the wall which directly faces the sun
for most of the time during the day.
4. Walk or cycle for short distances
5. Immediately convert petrol run vehicles to CNG
6. Car pool with colleagues / friends
7. Use solar devices wherever possible (- Heaters
,lighting systems )
Conserve Water
1. Use buckets for bathing instead of showers
2. Keep the taps closed while brushing or shaving
3. Do not throw away water after washing clothes or
vegetables – reuse for mopping ,flushing or
watering plants
4. Repair leakages quickly
5. We must not pollute water – do not throw waste /
religious idols , flowers etc in water bodies.
6. Use double flush systems in toilets – has a bigger
and a smaller tank to be used as per requirement
7. Use low flow water fixtures at home
8. Rain Water Harvesting systems must be installed
in societies / by Resident Welfare Association’s
of your area
Reduce waste
• Follow the concept of 5 R’s – review,reduce ,
reuse , recycle and refuse.
• Make compost pits
• Replace plastic / paper bags with jute or
cloth bags
• Share magazines and books
• Use both sides of the paper
• Return junk mails and avoid unnecessary
chatting on net
• Sell the waste to the kabadi wala’s – They sell
the items to the recycling industries
Conserve Nature , Conserve Life
• Scientists world wide have given only five – six years to
act and to act really fast or irreversible damage will be
caused which will begin a spiral of catastrophic events
and natural calamities leading to the end of human
civilization from the face of planet earth
• Remember –Nature can survive without
man but man cannot survive without nature.
IT IS NEVER TOO LITTLE OR TOO LATE.
IF NOT WE, THEN WHO ?
IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN ?

  • 11. LETTER FROM THE YEAR 2070 www ww w www w Wwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwww wwwwwww w w w wwwww ww w w w www wWwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwww wwwwwww w w ww www ww w www wWwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwww wwwwwww w w w wwwww ww w w w www w Wwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwwwWwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwww wwwwwww w w w wwwww ww w w w www wWwwwww w w ww w wwwwwwww wwwwwww Article published in the magazine "Crónicas de los Tiempos“, in April 2002.
  • 12.  This is the year 2070  I have just turned 50, but I my appearance is of somebody of 85.   I suffer from serious kidney problems, because I do not drink enough water.  I'm afraid I do not have much time left to live. I am one of the oldest people in this society.
  • 13. I remember when I was a child of 5. There were lots of trees in the parks, houses with beautiful gardens, and I could enjoy having a shower . Everything was very different then. Nowadays we use towels with mineral oil to clean our skin.
  • 14. Before, women had beautiful hair. Then, my father washed his car with water. Now, my son does not believe that water could be wasted that way. Now, we have to shave our heads to keep them clean without the use of water.
  • 15. I remember there were SAVE WATER warnings on outside posters, radio and TV, but nobody paid attention. We thought that water was to last forever. Now, all the rivers, lakes, dams and underground water beds are either dry or contaminated.
  • 16. Assaults at gun point on the streets for a can of water are very common. Food is 80% synthetic.
  • 17. Before, the recommended quantity of water to drink for an adult was 8 glasses a day. Nowadays, I am only allowed half a glass. We now have to wear disposable clothing.
  • 18. The outside appearance of the population is horrible: wrinkled, emaciated bodies, due to dehydration, full of sores caused by ultraviolet radiations. Skin cancer, gastrointestinal infections are the main causes of death.
  • 19. Due to the excessive drying of the skin young people of 20 look like 40. Scientists investigate, but there's no solution to the problem.
  • 20. The morphology of spermatozoa in many men has changed. As a consequence, babies are born with deficiencies, mutations and physical deformities.
  • 21. Government makes us pay for the air we breathe. The average life expectancy is 35 years.
  • 22. In some countries, where there are still some green zones crossed by rivers, these are guarded by heavy armed soldiers. Water became a very coveted treasure, more precious than gold and diamonds.
  • 23. Where I live, there are no trees, because it seldom rains. When it happens to register some precipitation, it is of acid rain. We were warned to look after the environment, but nobody cared.
  • 24. When my son asks me to talk about my youth, I tell him about the green fields, the beauty of the flowers, the rain, to drink all the water we could, and how healthy people were.
  • 25. Then, I feel a lump in my throat! He asks: Why there is no water?
  • 26. I cannot help feeling guilty, because I belong to the generation who contributed to the destruction of the environment or simply did not take into account all the warning signs.
  • 27. Now our children pay a very high price!
  • 28. How I would like to go back and make mankind understand… ...that we still had time to save our Planet Earth.
  • 29. This show was made by a very talented person, named Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam
  • 30. Don’t be scared Little initiatives taken by all of us will help in saving nature and will ensure a better survival for us and our future generations.
  • 31. Things we can do to help:
  • 32. Conserve Energy 1. Switch off the lights / fans when not in use 2. Change the lighting system at home 3. Use some ancient ways to keep ambient conditions in summers / winters : Like – paint the roof with slaked lime, place inverted pots on the roof, use slightly tinted glasses on the windows ,grow creepers on the wall which directly faces the sun for most of the time during the day. 4. Walk or cycle for short distances 5. Immediately convert petrol run vehicles to CNG 6. Car pool with colleagues / friends 7. Use solar devices wherever possible (- Heaters ,lighting systems )
