13. QUESTION #1
• How can I prevent the straps from sticking up?
• Feed the long strap through the second hole in the hole strap to make it lay down
• Cut off excess
•
QUESTION #2
• Why does the hydrocolloid get wrinkled when worn?
• The hydrocolloid conforms to the skin like a second skin. It is supposed to wrinkle and stretch with
the skin.
• Wrinkles show the device is working properly and providing a comfortable wear experience for the
patient. Wrinkles fade within minutes of removal.
QUESTION #3
• Don’t you have to warm hydrocolloid to make it stick?
• Not our formulation. CathGrip’s initial tack on dry skin is sufficient to eliminate special warming
techniques.
• The patient’s skin will warm the adhesive and increase the hold over the first few hours.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Thanks for taking a few minutes to learn more about BioDerm’s safe, secure, hydrocolloid products for catheter securement.
Before we get started, I would like to give you a little background information. BioDerm is a medical device manufacturer based in Largo, FL. All our CathGrip products are made in the USA. We mix our unique hydrocolloid adhesive on site, then cut it to make our exciting new products for male urinary incontinence management and catheter securement.
Using our proprietary hydrocolloid formulation we make products for both the acute care and out-patient markets. Our products include Men’s Liberty, a hydrocolloid external collection device for men, ReliaFit sold by Eloquest Healthcare is our acute care external device and CathGrip is our solution for catheter securement and stabilization.
In addition, we make several adjunct products that can help you get the most out of our hydrocolloid. This includes a BioPlus+ Barrier Prep Wipe which is included with all our products and our FreeDerm adhesive remover, sold separately. FreeDerm instantly releases hydrocolloid from even delicate skin without tearing or discomfort.
There are many hydrocolloid products on the market you may be familiar with. Some popular examples in DuoDerm and TegaDerm.
Each hydrocolloid formulation has unique properties that make it suited for different uses. The great thing about BioDerm’s hydrocolloid is that it is extremely thin and has initial tack. Basically, that means unlike many hydrocolloids, ours will stick firmly right away, no need to heat.
The other key feature is the polyurethane coating we use on the top of the hydrocolloid. This thin film allows the hydrocolloid to stretch and move with the patient’s skin, even diaphoretic patients with significant swelling.
This image will look familiar to many of you. This is a Statlock by CR Bard. It’s currently one of the most common catheter securement devices on the market. But it’s not the best.
Statlocks can cause significant complications as many of you have probably already seen. They use an aggressive acrylic adhesive that can tear the skin and hard plastic parts that can cause pressure injuries.
These complications can lead to pain & discomfort, tube dislodgement and device related ulcers – all high priority areas for patients and healthcare professionals.
So with that in mind, let’s move on to the features and benefits of UniGrip.
UniGrip has a oval shaped hydrocolloid base that comes in three sizes, depending on your needs. Each base has soft no slip grips (either on or two straps as shown here) that can secure tubes from 2-47 French. That is roughly the size of a piece of angel hair pasta up to a garden hose.
The soft straps are durable for repeat positioning, secures the catheter in both directions and does not contain any hard plastic parts anywhere.
The hydrocolloid seals to the skin for up to 7 days, moving and stretching with the patient to keep them comfortable and prevent skin tears.
UniGrip is a truly universal securement device. As you can see in the image on the right, there are many, many potential applications for UniGrip. It is can secure:
Drains
Foley Catheters
LVADs
PEG Tubes
Suprapubics
and many more…
UniGrip is available in either sterile or non-sterile, depending on your needs. As you can see in the image on the lower left, there are three base sizes (Small, Medium and Large). All are hypoallergenic, not made with natural latex and can secure tubes from 2-47 french.
So now, let’s walk through how to apply your UniGrip.
The first step is always to select and prep your application site. If your patient hair excessive hair, make sure to trim this. Begin by wiping the entire application site with an alcohol wipe. This is very important if you have been using any bath in a bag or cleansing wipes. These wipes contain lannolins that will cause the UniGrip to dislodge prematurely.
Allow the alcohol to dry.
For steps 2 and 3, we’re going to watch the UniGrip application video.
Now your done with application, the UniGrip should last up to 7 days.
To make sure you get the best wear time from your UniGrip, we recommend that you leave a 1” space around the hydrocolloid oval and do not clean this area with bath in a bag or cleansing wipes. Avoid using any other creams or lotions near the application site.
If your cleaning wipes come into contact with the hydrocolloid you will mostly likely experience early dislodgement of the device. If necessary, some facilities have found it useful to place a 1” barrier of paper tape around the oval as a reminder.
When the UniGrip is ready to remove, you will notice the base turning a shade of milky white. If you would like to remove the UniGrip before that happens, we recommend using FreeDerm or another adhesive remover.
FreeDerm is uniquely formulated to instantly release hydrocolloid without skin damage. It is avialable as a wipe or a 1 oz. pump spray.
To use, wipe or spray at the edge of the adhesive, lifting gently as you go. Continue wiping or spraying at the edge until the hydrocolloid is completely removed. For large surface areas, this may require two or more wipes.
If you have already contacted one our Sales Representatives to set up a trial – excellent. If not, there’s no time like the present. You can contact us at CustomerCare@BioDermInc.com and a representative will get back to you shortly.
We understand facilities often need to complete a product evaluation in order to bring in a new product and we are committed to being here for you throughout that process. On this slide, you will see the outline of how we set up product evaluations. Before starting your evaluation process, we recommend taking a few minutes to identify what is most important to you in a new product and what your facility’s Value Analysis Committee requires.
Here you will see a sample of one of our product evaluation forms. This form is a sample and we can customize as needed for your facility. If you have your own internal forms that’s fine too!
And last but not least, we wanted to take a few minutes to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about UniGrip.
First, when securing a smaller tube, there is excess strap sticking up, how can I make this lay flat. To do so, take the excess strap and feed it back through the upper hole in the opposite strap as you saw in the application video. This will make the straps lay flatter against the skin.
Second, is it a problem if the hydrocolloid gets wrinkly? Will is cause creases or damage to the skin? Fortunatley, the answer here is absolutely not. Our hydrocolloid is designed to mimic the natural wrinkles and texture of your skin. Some wrinkling of the hydrocolloid is totally normal. Creases may be visible in the skin after removal but fade quickly with no lasting damage.
And last but not least, many nurses who have been working with hydrocolloids for a long time wonder why our formula doesn’t require you to heat the UniGrip for it to stick. This is because our hydrocolloid is so thin, it has initial tack. All you need is the natural warmth of the patients skin and you hand when pressing it to the skin.
