 Various contaminants on the solid surface can be eliminated
naturally.
 Example of self cleaning behavior is lotus leaves surface-
Nano structured hydrophobic domain and micro meter-scale of
roughness superimpose, resulting surface having dual
functionality at the same time.
Self cleaning behavior
 Super hydrophobicity generally refers to the surface
with a water contact angle exceeding 150° .
 Water droplet on superhydrophobic surface can sweep
dust particle existing on the surface i.e. dust particle
existing on the surface can efficiently be removed
under rain.
 Superhydrophobicity is a macroscopic phenomena.
Super hydrophobicity
 Photocatalysis means acceleration of photoreaction
in presence of a catalyst.
 Photocatalytic activity depends on the ability of
catalyst to create electron hole pair.
 Photocatalytic material is generally wide band gap
semiconductor inorganic material.
 Organic molecule adsorb on photocatalytically active
surface, get decomposed by these strong oxidizing
agents and get transformed into H2O and CO2.
Photo catalytic activity
 SiO2 nanoparticle is coated on the glass surface with
poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS).
 Heating the coated glass then PDMS molecules are
vaporized.
 Hydrophobic glass surface is prepared with thin film of
SiO2 nanoparticle.
 Photocatalytic surface is prepared by deposition of TiO2
nanoparticle on an adhesive surface.
