Idea Development and
Planning

• Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
• You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or
visually interesting. Analyse what you have gathered.
• Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of
your chosen style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
• Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan
how you intend to realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
• Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
• Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your
contributors/sources.
• Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents.
• Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Mood board (or other idea development work):
Content:
My Web – Doc is going to be filmed in an interview style, therefore it will use the general conventions when
performing an interview, this includes:
Interviewees filmed in close up,
medium close up or mid shot.
The background will conventionally
have content of which relates to
the interviewee.
Interviewee is conventionally
placed to the left or right of the
frame.
After watching videos that are similar to mine, I have been
able to pick up on the conventions, and I will aim to use
these throughout my project. Here is what I have found:
- Interviewees backgrounds relate to their story
- There is close up footage being shown whilst the
interviewee speaks.
- We get to see a lot of the surrounding area of where the
documentary is shot.
Planning:
Script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Interview Questions:
Tattoo Artist: Individual with many body
piercings and tattoos:
Individual with few body piercings
or tattoos:
What inspired you to become a tattoo artist and how
did you become an artist?
Do people tell you a specific reason why they are
getting their tattoo?
Would you be able to share a story you have heard
from someone when giving them a tattoo that stands
out to you?
Do you think all tattoos should have a reason behind
them, or can they just be for fun?
Are you proud to be a tattoo artist and why?
Has the tattoo culture changed since you begun,
and if so, how?
Have you ever had to refuse giving anyone a tattoo,
and if so why?
What is the first tattoo and piercing you got, and why
did you get them?
Do all of your piercings and tattoos have meanings
behind them? If not – why did you get them?
Do you get judged often for having obvious tattoos
and piercings?
Do obvious piercings and tattoos deter employers
from hiring someone?
From your past experiences, which age group of
people seem the most judgemental towards body
modification?
Do you think body modification can go too far?
Are you planning on getting any more piercings or
tattoos?
How many piercings and tattoos have you got?
What is the reason behind getting these specific
modifications?
How do you feel about extreme body modification?
Do you think that people get judged for having
obvious piercings and tattoos? And if so, who do
you think the most judgemental people are?
Do you think that body modification can go too far?
In your opinion, is it okay for people to get tattooed
in unconventional places (such as their eyes) and
get extreme piercings.
Planning:
Shot planning:
I would like my video to be as
close to five minutes long as
possible, and I am interviewing 3
people. This means that each
person has a minute and a half.
This means that I will have to
film enough footage in each
different location to have the
video make sense.
My web-doc will include footage
of the interviewee themselves,
and close up shots of what they
are doing, with the voice audio
over the top.
Filler Footage:
I am going to film some filler
footage for my project, I am
going to record shorts clips in
and around York College, and
also the other locations that I
will be filming in.
This is helpful because it makes
the documentary more
interesting as there is more to
watch, I am also going to film
close ups when interviewing
everyone. This gives the viewer
an insight of what I will be
talking about.
