What is Respiratory System?
Respiratory System: Oxygen Delivery System
The respiratory system is the set of organs that
allows a person to breath and exchange oxygen
and carbon dioxide throughout the body.
Respiration Processes:
• BREATHING: Oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the lungs.
Breathing (pulmonary ventilation) consist of two cyclic phases:
• Inhalation, also called inspiration
• Exhalation, also called expiration
• External respiration: Gas exchange between air and blood
• Internal respiration: Gas exchange between blood and tissues.
• Cellular respiration: Oxygen used to produce ATP.
How the Respiratory System Works:
Air that flows from the mouth or nasal cavity
travels through the pharynx and moves down to
the trachea. Then the air moves to the bronchi
tubes as they enter the lungs. Once the air gets
in the lungs, the air enters separate branches
called the bronchioles. Carbon dioxide passes
from the blood into the alveoli and is then
exhaled.
How the Respiratory System Works:
Once in your lungs Oxygen travels from your
lungs through the bloodstream to the cell in
all parts of your body. Cells use the oxygen as
fuel and give off carbon dioxide as waste gas.
The waste gas is carried by the bloodstream
back to the lungs to be exhaled.
Functions Of Respiratory System:
1. Supplies the body with oxygen and disposes of
carbon dioxide
2. Filters inspired air
3. Produces sound
4. Contains receptors for smell
5. Rids the body of some excess water and heat
6. Helps regulate blood Ph
The organs of the
“Respiratory Tract’’
can be divided into two groups
“STRUCTURALLY’’
The Upper Respiratory Tract
Nose
Nasal cavity
Sinuses
Pharynx
The Lower Respiratory Tract
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchial Tree
lungs
The Respiratory Portion
(system where the exchange of
respiratory gases occurs)
Respiratory bronchioles
Alveolar Ducts
Alveoli
The Conducting Portion
(system of interconnecting cavities and
tubes that conduct air into the lungs)
Nose
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi
The organs of the
“Respiratory Tract’’
can be divided into two groups
“FUNCTIONALLY’’
The Organ of Respiratory Tract:
Nasal Cavity: Passes air through nose
Mouth: Passes air through mouth
Pharynx: The throat. Cone shaped passageway leading
to trachea.
Trachea: Windpipe. Main tube connecting nose/mouth
to lungs.
Epiglottis: Flap that covers the entrance to the trachea.
The Organ of Respiratory Tract:
Lungs: Main organ of the respiratory system.
Bronchi: Two tubes inside of lungs that air passes
through to the bronchioles.
Bronchioles: Small branching out tubes divided into
alveoli.
Alveoli: Tiny air sacs that do the oxidation and the
exhale of carbon dioxide.
The Organ of Respiratory Tract:
Capillaries: Blood vessels that are imbedded in the
walls of the alveoli. While in the capillaries the
blood discharges carbon dioxide into the alveoli and
takes up oxygen from the air in the alveoli.
Cilia: Hair like structures that remove dust and dirt
from the air.
Malfunction & Diseases of the Respiratory
System
Asthma A severe allergic reaction characterized by the
constriction of bronchioles
Bronchitis Inflammation of the lining of the bronchioles
Emphysema A condition in which the alveoli deteriorate, causing
the lung to lose their elasticity
Pneumonia Caused by the bacteria,
Pneumococcus. a condition in which the alveoli become
filled with fluid, preventing the exchange of gases
Lung cancer An irregular and uncontrolled growth of tumors in the
lung
Interesting Facts About the Respiratory
System:
 About half a liter of water per day is lost through
breathing.
 Yawning brings more oxygen to the lungs.
 Your right lung is larger than your left.
 We breathe 13 pins of air every minute.
 People under 30 take in double the amount of oxygen in
comparison to someone who’s 80 years old.
How to keep your Respiratory System
healthy:
 Try to Avoid:
oSmoking
oBeing around a
smoker(SecondHand)
oInhaling other chemicals and
drugs.
oBeing around dusty or thick
polluted air.
 What to do:
oExercise
oEat healthy.
oGo to annual doctor
checkup.
THANK YOU
