2. What is EFL?
According to Macmillan Dictionary, EFL refers to the English
Language taught to people who need to learn it for
their studies or their career, and who do not live in an English-
speaking country. In Bangladesh, we learn English as a Foreign Language.
On the other hand, in Collins Dictionary, EFL is referred to the practice and
theory of learning and teaching English for use in countries where it is not an
official medium. For example, in our country English is taught as a foreign
language as it is not the official medium. However, English is widely used in
public and private organizations of our country.
3. Difference between ESL and EFL
English as a Second Language
(ESL) refers to the teaching and
learning English in a country
where English is already the
main or official language. The
United States, Canada, the U.K.
and Australia are the major
locations where ESL is taught
and learnt academically.
English as a Foreign Language
(EFL) is the teaching and
learning English in countries
where English is not a language
of majority. Current important
places for EFL include South
Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and
Thailand. Students study English
in their own country, as part of
academic requirements in their
school systems, or in preparation
for travel or study in an English-
speaking country.
4. Practical Example of EFL and ESL
ESL
One common example can be
given in context of Sylhet. Many
people go to the UK, the USA
and other English speaking
countries every year getting
spouse visa. They plan to settle
down in those countries. If they
start learning English in those
countries, it’s a case of ESL.
EFL
In case of students like us, we are
learning English as an academic
subject. And that’s why the
situation represents EFL. We
want to use English for academic
purposes and if anyone plans to
go abroad for studies English
comes handy.
5. English Vinglish (2012)
Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) learns to
speak English during her visit to the
USA which means she is learning
English as a Second Language
Sapna (Navika Kotia), Shashi’s
daughter learns English in her school.
We can say it an EFL situation.
