Cosmetics are used almost regularly and universally in different forms
to enhance beauty. Cosmetics are developed to reduce wrinkles, fight
acne and to control oil secretion. For various types of skin ailments
formulations like skin protective, sunscreen, antiacne, antiwrinkle and
antiaging are designed using varieties of materials, either natural or
synthetic.
The demand of cosmetics prepared from herbal ingredient are
increasing day by day due to their inherent nature of very low side
effect.

The literature in Ayurveda, especially Charak Sahita, stated numerous medicinal plants
in Varnya kashaya. The herbs like chandan, haldi, khas, nagkheshara, manjistha,
yastimadhu are used to obtain glowing complexion and arusa, amala bavchi, guduchi,
chakmard are mentioned as kustaharan
Herbs like amalaki, haridra, abhaya, khadira, vidyanga, jati saptaparna, karavira
of various potential from Khshthagna and Mahakashiya are mentioned effective in skin
disorder.
Beginning 1990's cosmetic manufacturer adapted a term 'cosmeceuticals' to describe the
OTC skin care products that claims therapeutic benefit by addition of plant based active
ingredient with the help of previous literature.
Botanical extracts that support the health, texture and integrity of skin and hair
are widely used in commercial cosmetic formulations. Plant extracts are gaining
popularity as ingredients in cosmetic formulations, primarily because of the poor image
of animalderived extracts acquired during the past few years.

• Relatively more safe.
• More placebo effect to the consumers due to its use in traditions and culture
• Flexibility in formulation.
• Population proves effects from ancient time.

6. Criterias are Used for Selection of Herbal
Ingredient
• 80% of the world populations still depend on natural products.
• It is line with nature with no hazardous reaction.
• Many of these having some scientific as well as traditional evidences that are based on
experimental data on animals and ethno-botanical survey.
• Selection can be done easily based on recognized natural system of cosmetic by
referring to well recognized, validated and well accepted books on natural system of
medicines as well as cosmetics where the safety and effects are time tested.
• Selection of plants in present study is based on new claims and discoveries mentioned
in the research review.

7. Description of Herbal Ingredients
• Oat (Avena sativa)
It is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known by the same name
(usually in the plural, unlike other grains). Oats are recognized as possessing healing
and soothing properties. The gentle process used to extract oat oil from the whole oat
kernels ensures that the biological value remains unaltered. Oat oil is rich in
antioxidants, essential fatty acids and natural emollients. Oat oil is used in many lotions,
creams, facial oils, salves and balms since its properties add unique benefits.
• Marigold (Calendula officinalis)
A number of ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products are made from
Calendula officinalis, including an extract of the whole plant (Calendula officinalis
Extract) the flowers, flower extract and flower oil (Calendula officinalis Flower Extract,
Calendula officinalis Flower Oil) and the seed oil (Calendula officinalis Seed Oil) Of
the Calendula-derived ingredients, the flower extracts are the most commonly used in
cosmetics and personal care products.

• Wild Cherry Bark (Prunus serotina Bark)
Wild Cherry Bark has properties that makes the hair smooth, silky, and adds body to the
hair. The dried stem bark of Prunus serotina, collected in autumn in North America.
Used in lipsticks and cherry flavorings for food and medicines. Also used as a sedative
and expectorant medicinally
• Chicory (Cichorium intybus)
It was believed that the plant could purify the blood and liver, while others have relied
on the herb for its power to cure passions of the heart. Chicory continues to be a popular
herbal remedy due to its healing effects on several ailments.

• Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)
Its role as a healing herb
• Ghritkumar (Aloe vera)
It is a most ingenious mixture of an antibiotic, an astringent coagulating agent, a pain
inhibitor and a growth stimulator (also called a "wound hormone"), whose function is to
accelerate the healing of injured surfaces. It is applied externally and internally it's also
used for sunburn, scratch and a cleansing purge for the body or skin.
• Multani Mitts (Fullers Earth)
It is Mother Nature's own baby powder. lay was one of the earliest substances to be used
as a beauty mask to draw oils from the skin, natural moisturizers for hairs, teeth, gums
and hair, To remove pimple marks, treating sunburn, helps unclog pores, to cleanse the
skin of flakes and dir.

• Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Chamomile is also used cosmetically, primarily to make a rinse for blonde hair and as a
yellow dye for fabrics .
• Raktachandan
This was another natural component available in attractive color and hence was used as
fresh, red bindi / tika (dot) on the forehead.
• Chandan and Vertiver (Usheer)
It was used as scrubs and face packs that were applied on face and whole body to
remove dead cells, regenerate growth of new cells and give a young look.
• Haldi (Turmeric)
It was used as a face pack along with usheer (vertiver) and also as an antiseptic.

• Ginseng
Ginseng is incorporated as an anti-maturing component in facial creams.
• Rosemary
Utilizing rosemary holds the nourished content of the skin, consequently keeping the
skin firm and thus prevents the fine lines appear on the facial skin.
• Gingko
Primarily comprises flavonoids and terpenoidsthat enhance the bloodstream and
protect the skin damage, Gingko is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and
anti-aging activity

• Silymarin (sun blocking agent)
Silymarin is obtained from the seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum). It is a
flavonoid compound contains flavonolignans that prevent the superoxide radicals
production.
• Walnut
Extract of walnut is produced using the fresh green shells of English walnut, Juglans
Reggie. The aqueous concentrate of walnut has been found to be especially beneficial as
a self-tanning sun blocker agent
• Apigenin
Apigenin is a broadly distributed herb. Apigenin was observed to be successful in the
protection from UVA or UVB rays induced skin carcinogenesis in SKH-1 mice.

15. Present status
• According to market survey the global market for cosmetics and toiletries reached
nearly $150 billion in 2004, increase by more than 4 per cent from 2003, which
highlights major growth in key developing markets.
• World demand for herbal products has been growing at a rate of 10% - 15% per
annum.
• The medicinal plants related trade in India alone is approximately Rs. 5.5 billion.
• World Health Organization (WHO) has forecasted that the global market for herbal
products would be worth $5 trillion by the year 2050.

There are various products that are available in the market, which is based on herbal
ingredients. The market size is expanding for herbal cosmetics. However, there is
always need for regulatory control for better utilization and safety of end users. Some of

• Currently, Poor scientific justifications are available.
• More susceptible to microbial and inorganic contamination.
• Identifying substantial identity of herbs.
• Multi phytoconstituent evaluation is hard- hitting.
• Poor organoleptic properties.
• Immiscibility of extract with other ingredients.
• Appropriate values of basic pharmaceutically considered
• Parameters like PH values, acid values and complexation of natural phyto-ingredients
may change the competency of formulation

18. Conclusion
Herbal ingredients are the well known safest component for cosmetic preparation but
the regulatory requirements are the same as other chemical ingredient. Analysis of
herbal ingredients are very difficult as they contain several compounds. Damage to
benefits ratio is more for herbal ingredients so the uses of herbal ingredients are justified
in cosmetics preparation.
