3. History
In 1960, the Indian state of Bombay was split into two states, Maharashtra and
Gujarat ; leaving Gujarat without a capital city.
In the beginning, Ahmedabad – a commercial hub of Gujarat was chosen as the
state Capital.
It was later proposed that a New capital city be constructed along the line of the
other new state capitals, particularly Chandigarh.
Upon completion of the new city, the administrative capital of Gujarat was shifted
from Ahmedabad to Gandhi Nagar.

5. Gandhi Nagar City
• Gandhi Nagar lies on the west bank of the
Sabarmati River (dharoi dam)
• It was planned in between 1965-70.
• The New capital city was planned by two Indian
Planner : Prakash M Apte and H.K Mewada ,
Both planner has worked as trainer under Le
carbusier in the Chandigarh Project in 1950.

• Gandhi Nagar is planned on the principle of sector,
each measuring about 1km*0.8km in length and
width.

Air
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport located in Ahmedabad is 18 km away from
Gandhinagar, providing both domestic and international flights.
Rail
Gandhinagar railway station is located in Sector 14. Many trains running on the western zones pass
through Gandhinagar. Currently, there are five trains running from this station in which three are
express trains and two are MEMU trains.
Road Route
Gandhi Nagar is Connected to Mumbai (about 545 km away) and Delhi (about 873 km away) though
NH 48.

Metro
Under Phase II of the Ahmedabad Metro, total 22.8 km long network connecting
Gandhinagar with Ahmedabad is being constructed. The North-South line of the

in Gandhinagar in the Indian state of Gujarat. Spread over an area

12. Gujarat Vidhan Sabha
The Vithalbhai Patel Bhawan located in Gandhi Nagar houses the
Gujarat Vidhan Sabha and the legislature offices. This building was
named after the great freedom fighter Vithalbhai Patel. Vithalbhai
Patel was the co-founder of the Swaraj Party and elder brother of
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was also the first Indian speaker of
Central Legislative Assembly.
The Gujarat assembly building is in the center of the city.
