Assignment on: Research design Types and
significance

2. INTRODUCTION
The research design is the conceptual
structure within which research is conducted
; it constitutes the blue print for the
collection, measurement and analysis of
data.
3. • The research design provides the back
bone structure of the study , it supports
the study and holds it together.
• The research design refers to the
researcher overall plan for answering the
research question or testing the research
hypotheses.
4.
5. Different types of Research Designs
1. Exploratory research design
2. Descriptive research design
3. Experimental research design
6. 1. Exploratory Research Design :
Exploratory research design aims to get a
better understanding of the problem by
explaining the concepts and developing
hypotheses regarding the research study.
Various techniques used in exploratory
research study are literature survey ,
focus groups , case studies etc.
Exploratory research does not emphasize
upon sampling , but tries to gather
information from participants who are
considered knowledgeable.
7. 2. Descriptive Research Design :
Unlike exploratory research, the aim of
descriptive research is to describe the
characteristics of a phenomenon is more
rigid than exploratory research. It
describes various aspects related to a
population. It is the study that is designed
to depict the population in much more
accurate way. It attempts to describe,
explain and interpret the conditions in
much detailed approach. It examines a
phenomenon that is occurring at a specific
place and specific time.
8. 3. Experimental Research Design :
This is a type of research design which is
predetermined and structured in nature. It is
used for causal or conclusive research, which
is conducted quantitatively. It is called casual
research, because it is helpful in exploring
the cause and effect relationship of a
research problem. The main objective is to
test the hypotheses which were defined in
the exploratory research . Experimental
research is simply opposite to the descriptive
research as with the help of experimentation
,it can interpret whether the relationship is
casual or not.
9. Significance of Research
• Research assumes significant role in the formulation
of all government policies of an economic system.
• Research is also necessary for collecting information
on social and economic structure of an economy.
• Research has significance in solving various
operational and planning problems associated with
business and industry.
• Research is equally important to social scientists for
analysing the social relationships and seeking
explanations to various social problems.
10. • To professionals in research methodology, research is
source of livelihood
• To philosophers and thinkers, research may mean the
outlet and insights.
• To analysts and intellectuals, research is a means for
generalisations of new theories.
• Increased amounts of research make progress possible.
Research inculcates scientific and inductive thinking and
it promotes the development of logical habits of thinking
and organistion.
