The viewpoint that psychological disorders have a
biological basis
• Symptom
– A departure from normal functioning or feeling that
indicates the presence of a disorder
• Diagnosis
– The process of distinguishing one disorder from another

Compulsive Disorder?
A disorder characterized by repetitive,
unwanted, and distressing actions and/or
thoughts
• Obsessions
– Obsessions are persistent thoughts or ideas that
cause distress or interfere significantly with
ongoing activity.
• Germs, harming, sexually explicit thoughts, religious
ideas, losing personal items
• Compulsions
– repetitive behaviors or mental acts that people
feel compelled to perform in order to prevent or
reduce anxiety
– Cleaning, checking, counting, washing

Distressing Thoughts/Urges
• Body dysmorphic disorder
– An obsessive-compulsive related disorder characterized by
preoccupation with an imagined physical defect
– 10% of plastic surgery patients
• Hoarding disorder
– characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting
with possessions, regardless of their actual value
• Etiology of obsessive-compulsive and related
disorders
– Brain malfunction that does not stop recurrent
thoughts
– Low activity in decision-making and impulse control
– Operant conditioning through anxiety reducing
behaviors

• Reactive attachment disorder
– A childhood psychological disorder characterized by a pattern of
inhibited, emotionally withdrawn behavior toward adult
caregivers
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
– A disorder characterized by flashbacks and recurrent thoughts of
life-threatening or other traumatic events
– *Criteria
• Etiology of trauma- and stressor-related disorders
– Environmental (trauma, neglect, abuse, injury)
– Biological predispositions, comorbidity, changes to
amygdala

Disorders?
Disorders characterized by disruptions in consciousness,
memory, sense of identity, or perception
• Dissociative amnesia
– characterized by the inability to recall important personal
information, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature (localized
or general)
• Dissociative identity disorder
– characterized by the presence of two or more distinct identities
or personalities that take turns controlling the person’s
behavior
• Etiology of dissociative disorders
– Often follows traumas, extreme repression or dissociation
– some patients have correlation with epilepsy
– Therapy involves integrating the personalities

• A mood disorder characterized by extreme and persistent negative
moods and the inability to experience pleasure from activities

– A mood disorder characterized by swings between the
emotional extremes of mania and depression
– Mania (elated mood, heightened emotional state, energy,

• DSM5 has 10 different classes of drugs
– alcohol; caffeine; cannabis; hallucinogens; inhalants;
opioids; sedatives, hypnotics, or anxiolytics;
stimulants; tobacco; and other or unknown
substances
• When use of substance leads to issues at
home, work, school, or in relationships.
• Binge drinking (5 or more drinks)
– Heavy alcohol use: binging 5x or more/month
• 5.6% of us adults (2019), 9% of college
students

The viewpoint that psychological disorders have a biological basis • Symptom – A departure from normal functioning or feeling that indicates the presence of a disorder • Diagnosis – The process of distinguishing one disorder from another • Etiology – The initial cause that led to the development of the disorder • Prognosis – A prediction about the likely course of a disorder

A disorder characterized by repetitive, unwanted, and distressing actions and/or thoughts • Obsessions – Obsessions are persistent thoughts or ideas that cause distress or interfere significantly with ongoing activity. • Germs, harming, sexually explicit thoughts, religious ideas, losing personal items • Compulsions – repetitive behaviors or mental acts that people feel compelled to perform in order to prevent or reduce anxiety – Cleaning, checking, counting, washing

S-14 11.2b More Disorders That Involve Distressing Thoughts/Urges • Body dysmorphic disorder – An obsessive-compulsive related disorder characterized by preoccupation with an imagined physical defect – 10% of plastic surgery patients • Hoarding disorder – characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value • Etiology of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders – Brain malfunction that does not stop recurrent thoughts – Low activity in decision-making and impulse control – Operant conditioning through anxiety reducing behaviors

Disorders characterized by disruptions in consciousness, memory, sense of identity, or perception • Dissociative amnesia – characterized by the inability to recall important personal information, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature (localized or general) • Dissociative identity disorder – characterized by the presence of two or more distinct identities or personalities that take turns controlling the person’s behavior • Etiology of dissociative disorders – Often follows traumas, extreme repression or dissociation – some patients have correlation with epilepsy – Therapy involves integrating the personalities
