2. MASTHEAD: To begin with, the choice of name itself for
my front cover instigates attraction. The word addicted
means ‘enthusiastically devoted to a particular thing or
activity’. This is the aim for my magazine. The choice of
name addicted, in black bold font, and capital letters
all been used to help the masthead stand out more. It
immediately catches your eye and captivates the reader,
even if it is for a few seconds. This is so that just by seeing
the masthead, the reader is already intrigued, without
even having to read the rest of the cover. As for the Mise
en Scene, the masthead is placed slightly over her head
symbolize the significance of the magazine. We know she
is a celebrity and therefore an important figure, however,
the use of the masthead above her, shows the power and
worth of the magazine, compared to her.
3. MAIN IMAGE: The model on the front cover is named
as Courtney Beleru, an upcoming artist, from a wealthy
family, who strives to be an icon. Immediately, what
attracts us towards her is her body language. Although
it is not obvious, she is in line with the male gaze. This
evident as she is wearing a revealing top, where
cleavage is showing, she has tilted her head to the side
slightly as if to entice the readers. In addition to this, I
believe my audience will be attracted to this as she is
wearing fur. This is usually linked with wealthy
individuals who are higher in society.
4. COVER LINES: As well as the image, the cover lines play a
huge role in grabbing and holding on the reader’s
attention. To begin with, I only used my color scheme of
red, white, and black, to interlink with my contents page
and double page spread. This also makes the page look
striking but simple. My font is black, but I highlighted key
words in red to accentuate them. This is likely to catch my
readers attention as the red is bright and the words
highlighted are bold words used to seize the readers
attention. I used 2 different fonts for the cover lines:
Bodoni MT, and Lucida Console, to keep it practical. One
other method I used to attract my audience is by putting
cover line across the main image. As my background is
white, the use of the black background creates a vast
contrast, emerging from the rest of the page. The words
want to be an icon’ are buzz words, likely to intrigue my
readers. It is also the second largest font on the page,
36, and white, meaning it is more likely to catch the eye
my reader.
5. To begin with, one way I managed to attract my
audience is the use of language in my contents page. I
used informal language as the age group of my target
audience can relate to this tone and is most likely to
seize their attention. In addition to this, as my target
audience is of ages 11-19, I used a slight amount of
slang to avoid the magazine being boring or dull.
As well as the language, the font also plays a large role
in how my audience is attracted to it. For example, I have
used large font and added color which makes the page
appear brighter and stand out much more than existing
magazines.
Based on the survey I conducted, I made a decision for
the contents of my magazine. I used an exclusive
interview, a music chart, favorites of the month, and a
quiz. This is likely to attract my audience as it provides a
wide range of material to read, which is likely to keep the
reader immersed.
6. The design for my masthead attracts my target
audience as it is black, the most popular color on
my survey. I have also used capital letters to make
it stand out more. I have used this throughout my
contents page to emphasize the articles and catch
the readers attention.
