Process Alien game
In The first part, I had made a screenshot of an infinite run game. I used pixel art on Photoshop to make
the character in the game. I decided to make a game about an alien attempting an escape from area 51.
in this, he will receive points and avoid obstacles. For the alien, I made his skin green, to make him look
unusual, and stand out against the plain backgrounds. With the colour, I had toned it by putting in
darker and lighter shades of the original colour. I did this by making the colour darker slightly. With his
suit, I made it purple, to make it look more unusual. I gave it a shocked face, to show his expression with
running from the guards. With the background, I made it drab and dark. I wanted it to look like a reason
for the alien to run from this horrible place. One horrific feature, would be the damp on the wall. I did
this by drawing out a crooked triangle on the roof out of gray. In this, I shaded in the sides, and in the
middle, to make it look like it had expanded. The background was a dull brown colour, with a 52 all over
the wall. This wall looks eerie, and something you wouldn’t want to see in real life. The number was
hand drawn on the wall. Lastly, the Ice cream. I made this separately, like the character was. The ice
cream was a plain vanilla, so that it doesn't look like a power up, but still something you want. The ice
cream was made by making a cone shape with an orange/brown colour. In this, I added darker and
lighter tones to it. I then made a semi circle with a light orange brown colour. I then added tone to the
ice cream too. Lastly, I added a flake to it, just to make it look more delicious and something you want.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
From this, there are elements that I want to potentially include in my actual game. One thing I would
definitely include, would be adding tone to the colours. The tone stopped the characters from
looking flat and plain. It adds better graphical and satisfying image, as it looks like a 3D object in the
2D world. Also, I want to include a background that fits in with the background based on tone and
colour. As you can see in the practice game, it was dark, with damp walls, to make the place look like
a hell hole which the alien is trying to escape. In my game, it would need to be light colours and an
high rise building background, to indicate that it is a normal day. Lastly, character movement. Even
though the image was a screenshot, I do try to indicate the leg movement of the alien. I want to
show the tires moving, and the sirens swap lights, to add more characteristic to the car.
Process Sound
With the sound for the game, I went onto beep box to experiment with the program to make an 8-bit
like song. With it, there were four different options of sound tunes to use. Three were different
tones, and one was a beat sound. The blue tone was the high pitch tone in which was mainly used to
be the main beat of the song. The game was a forever run game, so I made the beat go up and down
fast, to go with the chasing and fast idea the game has. I made the beat really short and go up and
down. This made the sound effect sound rushed. The beat usually has two matching points to make
the game have a sci-fi noise to it. This fits in with the alien theme to the game. I also add the base
sounds to match the similar filled in squares the main beat are in. This is to make the song sound
more smoother, and adds to the beat too. The beats were long beat sounds, so that it has a better
smoothen effect to it, and so it doesn’t fully blend in with the main sound. I lastly then apply the beat
sound in some areas of the song. This is what makes the song sound less repetitive, as it’s the least
common sound that beats in the music. With the sound adjustments, I had lowered the volume of
the bass noises, and made the high beat noises the loudest. This is so that the sounds don’t clash
together, and so the main sound is the main focus.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
There are also elements of the sounds which I may want to include in my final idea. Even though I
may likely use garage band for the project, I may want to use some sound inspirations from beep
box into it. Firstly, I may consider using a similar beat for my game. The beat was very exiting, and
exiting, as it has a fast sound towards it. My game is an action based game, and I feel like a fast
beating song will pump up the excitement of the game. Also, I would like to include the backing
sounds to the music. In the practice song, the bass line sounds made the song sound less boring
and empty. In the new game, I will include backing sounds in the music, so that the game play has
a more pleasure full sound towards it, rather than a repetitive one beat sound, that makes the
game sound empty.
Process cookie swap
The last game I Focused on was a match game. I got inspiration from
Candy crush to make a cookie swap game. This game was a bit more
simpler than the infinite run game, as the background stays in the same
place. I made different style of cookies. I made a typical cookie, by
making a rough circle and adding brown dots in it. I also made a
Digestive, by making a dark orange circle, and then another brown circle
in the middle of the previous circle. I then made a brownie . For this, I
made a brown square, then made a smaller darker brown square in it.
Lastly, a ginger bread man. For this, I just got the orange draw tool, and
drew out the shape of a body and then applied it to the rest of the
cookies. I would lay out the cookies randomly in the box by duplicating
each cookie multiple times. I would inline some of the similar cookies,
to give an example of connecting three, but I would also put the cookies
in random areas. The background of the game play is just a gray square,
to represent a tray, in which the cookies are all laid out on. This is a
simple rectangle behind the cookies. Behind the gray tray, it was
brownie coloured backgrounds, to fit in with the colour scheme o
cookies.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
There aren't many elements which I would apply from this design, as it is more simpler than the
previous alien game. What I could include from this, would be inspiration from the colour scheme
of the game. I like that this game follows a similar flow in colours to make the game stick with a
certain theme and common look. I would like my game to have its own theme, by potentially
having a colour scheme in the game to make it stick with a theme so it doesn’t uncomfortable. I
could also focus on detail of smaller objects. In the Cookie game, there is little detail in the
cookies, but still looks good as it is small. I could use this in the unlock able menu, by making
simplistic icons for the points and the pause icon.
