2. Existing Product
These two screenshots accurately show different
settings, which is what I also want to include in my game.
The difference in lighting accurately differentiates the
two different setting
The Mario figure tends to be quite small in comparison
to the screen, though this is because Mario jumps up
instead of just staying on one level.
It has a very minimalistic running and jumping animation
when going over obstacles.
It includes jumping sound effects and a nice sound at the
end of the level when you complete it, and bad sound
effects when you die or get injured.
The settings are very varied making it interesting for the
player with bright colours and a variety of different
scenes.
However, Mario’s costume stays the same throughout
the game, only changing when you get a certain power
up.
The game also has multiple platforms instead of just one
at the bottom of the screen which can be jumped to.
3. Existing Product
This game is very advanced in terms of horse animation, it
follows the basic gallop cycle but with more realistic
animations and more detail.
The lighting is extremely detailed and variant throughout
the entire game.
This would make people really want to play the game as it
makes it really immersive and makes it feel real.
The sound design is also really good in the game with a
fitting soundtrack and appropriate background music. For
example, when enemies are close by or you get ambushed,
the music turns from gentle to quicker and more
aggressive.
The costume design is really varied as the main character
and horse are both customizable, which again makes it
appealing for the audience as it seems real.
The fonts for title screen, game over screen and in game
menus are all the same so it adds a sense of cohesiveness.
The game can be viewed by many angles due to the fact it
is 3D and has a movable camera.
The map has many intractable props
4. Existing Product
This game is very similar to my idea, due to the fact it’s
animated in pixels and includes a horse as one of the main
characters.
The horse animations are clearly in a cycle but quite
smooth considering the graphic restraints
The backgrounds and settings are really detailed which
would make it interesting for the player.
The game has multiple different settings including both
day and night sequences which make it more immersive.
The levels have little details and effects which add more
realism to the world and overall make it look nicer.
The character is customizable meaning there are multiple
different costumes available in game.
The soundtrack is very peaceful and medieval sounding,
which certain effects depending on what happens.
For example, the fire makes a sound effect when you get
close and you make a sound if you get hurt.
The game uses backgrounds mixed with the foreground to
create an immersive environment that seems 3D.
There are a lot of things on the map to interact with.
5. Existing Product
This game has very vibrant colours for both the setting and
the detailed background.
As well as the main character, it has multiple enemies with
varying sizes and positions on the map.
The graphics also differentiate depending on the level,
making the game interesting for people who like different
styles of design.
The game is a side scroll so you have a 2d perspective and
are racing the camera with obstacles, similar to the game I
want to design.
The game seems quite difficult and can be hard for a few
players, demonstrated by youtuber ‘DashieGames’ who
couldn’t pass the level shown bottom left.
The sound varies depending on the level with sound
effects for getting injured, dying, succeeding etc.
The soundtrack fits each level very well and is distinct and
recognizable.
The challenge of the game and the attractive design of the
levels would make someone want to play it.
There are many props that act as obstacles for the player
6. Research Analysis
– I will take into account the character size and make sure my character in my final
product is quite small so it doesn’t take up the entire screen.
– I really like the detailed backgrounds for ‘Kingdom: Classic’ and would like to have my
game also have similarly detailed backgrounds with little pieces of animation to make it
immersive.
– I will include a variety of levels at different time zones in order to provide a variety of
lighting effects and make the levels more interesting.
– I will make sure the sound correlates towards what’s happening on screen by providing
different soundtracks with appropriate tones for each level and a clear noise when
something either good or bad happens, such as clearing an obstacle or death.
• What common features do the researched products have?
– Three out of four games I have researched are 2D
– They each have a variety of different levels with different kind of lighting, such as
night/day, over-world/underworld
– They all have a sound design which relates to what's happening in game, like background
music that correlates with the overall tone of each level and sound effects when
something either good or bad happens.
– The character tends to be small in comparison to the background in the 2d games
looked at, but quite large in the 3D game ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
