1. Diary entry for the filming of Amy Kilbride's TV advertisement.
Published for the purpose of the Smile Campaign.
11:30 Sunday, 9th January 2022
Although filming has not started yet, I would like to note down my main plans, issues and
changes before the camera is brought out.
Tomorrow, as there will only be one session for college, I would like to get at least one
scene complete which will have me asking a few classmates to take part in as I have no one
for the shot. At least by that case, I’mnot getting in the way whilst everyone else also begins
working on their advertisements. I don’t want to end up being a cause to interrupting their
schedules. Issues? The possibility I can’t get anyone to participate... If that is the case, I will
search for students in the building to request whether they’d be comfortable enough to act
in front of the camera to be willing to participate, helping me out as cast members.
Wednesday... early hours I am expecting an old school mate to travel through from Durham
for a scene that she will be sharing with my partner Keilan Ramsden. Once complete, I will
be travelling back with her through Durham to meet with another two friends who will be
starring in separate scenes. Meaning if all goes to plan, 3 extra scenes will be complete.
Thing is... a few issues come with that if anything falls the wrong way. 1. Brooke Meale may
not be able to show up or maybe won't arrive early enough. The second possibility shouldn’t
be too much of a problem depending really on the clock. 2. Jaycie Kipling is going through
some medical problems at the minute which I won't mention keeping the details
confidential, so fingers crossed all patches up in time. 3. Last one that comes to mind, Jamie
Meek isn’t the most reliable person. Yes, today he says he’s available, but there’s always
that chance something will come up preventing that scene to be started never mind
finished.
Thursday, cast member Jaycie Kipling will be voice recording a staged argument between
her and her boyfriend, Nathan Davis, for me to edit into the background for one of Jamies
scenes. I do really hope they don’t change their mind on performing this act but if so, I guess
I will have to find another pair to act this out for me, which I don’t imagine being too
difficult of a job.
As for the very last scene to be filmed, nothing is in place to record that chapter yet with the
cast member written into this act, Ellie Raine, has recently found she has covid. So, for her
scene now, I am going to have to find another to take her place which, fingers crossed,
doesn’t turn out to be much of a challenge.
07:37 Monday, 10th January 2022
A few bits have been changed since yesterday's arrangements... starting off, realising she
has an exam on the morning she was supposed to come through, Brooke Meale's availability
is only open for the upcoming Sunday. Thinking it out, I have decided to give her Ellie
Raine’s scene considering with a day in the weekend being her only free day whereas her
original part was to be in college, it appeared best to switch roles casting her character
2. outside of college which works a lot better. By replacing Ellie with Brooke, all I need to do is
find someone up for taking over Brookes ex-role. It’s possible I could even get that scene
done today actually if I find someone who would be willing to take part in the video.
11:36 UPDATE
No filming has begun yet with not having the cast, BUT actor Keilan Ramsden has got in
contact with few old classmates he now shares a college course with. Requesting they be a
part of the project. No confirmations at this given moment in time though as they haven’t
responded to his message yet asking. A change in schedule being caused, once college is
over and done with tomorrow at half four, I will be hopping on the bus heading to Langley
Park to have one scene filmed then the next day another scene shall be shot giving a decent
start to this project.
13:18 UPDATE
Great news! I have new cast members for this project coming in from the game design
course. Talking with them, a few questions and answers were passed back and forth, details
being given on their parts and what they would need to do. Didn’t take too long for them to
be onboard. So now: I have Jamie’s scene tomorrow after college, Wednesday will focus on
Jaycie's, Thursday I can get the scene involving Owen Bates, Travis Young and Devon Hunt
completed and possibly even Keilan’s scene if I succeed in getting another student to join in.
Then finally, Brooke's scene on Sunday. Whoop!
22:24 UPDATE
Right so issues have risen again... Annoyingly it has taken me a few hours too late to realise
this, but I have work on Sunday giving no possibility of having any filming done that day for
Brooke Meales shots. On top of that, disruptions have erupted causing Jamie to no longer
be available for his scenes which was supposed to have been both started and completed
tomorrow after college leading to a change of arrangements moving his scene now into
Thursday afternoon which has also disrupted another scene that was going to get filmed
that day. This scheduling is so chaotic.
17:00 Tuesday, 11th January 2022
Surprisingly, shots have actually been taken today! Starting at 11:50am, it only took around
half an hour to have everything completed. Zero issues went on with filming as well luckily,
main problem to strike was getting the permission to record footage on the college grounds.
Requesting a signature from someone working in the main office, I believed that would have
been a good idea considering the shots were taken outside of any buildings but still on
college grounds... So yeah, I was wrong about that. No one understood or even knew
themselves if they were allowed to grant me permission, so after another half hour or so I
finally got the location lease back and had it signed by the lecturer I had at that moment in
time.
Finding I have both this week and next week to have all video files gathered, I have arranged
with Brooke Meale to get her scene complete the Sunday after this instead being the 23rd of
3. January. If possible though I might aim to find another who could take her role therefore
everything is altogether done and dusted and there’s no risk of not being able to get her
scene complete. No more waiting to film, 100% ready to edit the footage together.
Finally, I am on my way now to Langley Park which shouldn’t take much longer maybe
another 20-30 minutes. This allowing me to have another scene complete, maybe even two
depending on Jamie’s schedule really. So far for now though, one scene down four left to
go!
12:58 Wednesday, 12th January 2022
Well this is great. Just as we were about to start filming, we discovered the SD card didn’t
want to work with the camera. Could have had two scenes done today as well but not now,
can’t have it that easy now, can we? Arrangements have been made between me and the
cast now for me to go home tonight, replace the camera tomorrow whilst in college then at
quarter to one shall be jumping back on the x20 for another fun long bus ride through here
to, fingers crossed, finally manage to get the shots done.
Some good news today though, Ellie Raine popped up earlier sending a screenshot of a
message showing her PCR test result, that turning out to be negative. Lucky there, she can
still be a part of the project. That is if she would still be up for it that is. Currently, no dates
or times have been set yet for her coming through but at least there’s an extra cast
member.
17:54 UPDATE
Quick note that saves me as little as it sounds, rather than having no choice but to carry a
tripod everywhere with the risk of dropping it or possibly even forgetting it, I have received
permission to leave behind the equipment piece. Allowing me to have access to it when I
need it tomorrow, I will then bring it back through to return to the technician department.
Otherwise, if I went ahead with bringing it through with me now (as currently I am on the
x20 home now) leading to me having to carry it on a journey home which takes, at the least,
an hour and a half. Just to then to have it in hand heading to college tomorrow, dropping
the tripod off just to pick up again then carrying the equipment back through to Langley
Park then bringing it back again whereas leaving it at the filming location I can go through
that process once making it a whole lot easier on me.
09:05 Thursday, 13th January 2022
I have now turned in the camera I leant out, luckily finding the problem was no fault of mine
as when looking into whether the device only had an issue with my SD card or not, turns out
it wasn’t accepting any SD cards. Once my college day is over at quarter to one this
afternoon, I will be lending a different camera and hopping back on the bus through to
Durham where hopefully there should be no issue getting the footage needed. Not wanting
to waste my time tonight, I will make sure to test out the camera before heading off so any
footage tonight 100% can be shot.
16:52 UPDATE
4. Right. I am on the bus now heading home. I got out of college about half an hour early
getting me out at twenty past twelve. Got on the bus at twenty to one. Arriving at Langley
Park at five past two with filming beginning after another 10 minutes of heading to the
location and setting everything up. This time as well without issue. Minus the fact not even
halfway through filming the battery percentage dropped but luckily all the scenes have been
filmed today.
Another bonus today, Ellie Raine is back on board for filming her original scene so can get
that done also. Discussing times and days, so far, we planned for her to come through to
Sunderland tomorrow once she finishes college at 12 but no confirmation s yet as we are
still on arranging that. That’s three scenes down, two left to film.
20:54 UPDATE
Ellie Raines popped up again, she can’t do tomorrow as she has a driving lesson. I don’t
mind though, thinking about it I was on considering she came through next week instead
due to tomorrow being a long college day. Although, a bonus for the video, Nathan Ritchie
(Ellie's partner) is going to be a part of the project so there’s another person for the video.
Shooting the final shots will be complete next week when both Ellie and Nathan travel
through here so will be able to get the last two scenes done on the same day. Not much left
now.
08:47 Friday, 14th January 2022
Next Monday will be the next and most likely last day of filming for this project. They don’t
have college that day and I only have one session so should be an easy day for filming. Plans
are, once they get here Nathan will get his scene done and for that, I am thinking to have
both Ellie and Nathan share the screen there as Keilan has work early hours that day. Once
complete, following permissions being granted and there’s no additional issues stringing
along, we will head to my house completing Ellie’s scene which will positively lead to all my
footage needed will have been taken. Nothing will be left to film giving next week being a
start for editing. That of course all sticks to plan for next Monday.
Well, although all footage will have been gathered, an audio file is still on needing to be
recorded by Jaycie Kipling and her partner Nathan Davis who have both agreed to be a part
of the mp3 file. All it really depends on there is if and when they get that finished to then
send over for me to edit into the background of one shot. Got time for now though to have
it done so not going to worry or even stress about that part just yet.
09:17 Monday, 17th January 2022
Okay so maybe no filming will get done today. Earlier I had in mind to maybe not bother
filming one of the scenes yet as the two who were coming through for partly that duration
of the project would end up having to stick around till three-four... but stopping this from
being possible, they need to head back for two o-clock both having college. The reason for
my selected times is due to last Friday whilst waiting around, I noticed how empty the
college basically is around that timing so thinking for when it came to filming a certain
scene, I wouldn’t find it too awkward having to work around the other students who aren’t
5. included. With having a lot already filmed, I was quite happy to wait another day or so as
long as it got done this week.
But just now, Ellie Raine has messaged notifying me they wouldn’t be able to travel through
not having the money falling into debt. So, fingers crossed, they will manage to sort the
issue out and travel through some point before the 22nd. If not, I guess I will have to find
new members to participate. Rather than waiting too long to find out, I will give them till
tomorrow to figure it out. Once again, I don’t entirely mind still having the time to get the
shots done... just hopefully they do get done before Friday.
09:32 Tuesday, 18th January 2022
The debt problem with Ellie is sorted whoop. Now it is just getting them through. As I am
typing this up, I am currently in conversation with Ellie Raine trying to arrange for her
coming through to get the scene done. Still uncertain, she was just about to try get sorted to
leave but now a few issues have gotten in the way giving no definite answer as to whether
she’ll be getting the bus through yet.
09:41 UPDATE
Yeah... looks like I’ll be hunting for a few more actors to get this complete.
09:46 UPDATE
So many updates in such little time. This one is only because I just realised, I don’t have my
laptop on me. Why am I bringing this up? As unimportant as not having my laptop at this
very moment sounds, I was on thinking of asking the classmates opposite me if any of them
would be up for being a part of my project... so when it does come to filming one of two
scenes, I will need the device at hand which will be placed as a prop. Really it isn’t much of
an issue as easily I could head home and be back in about an hour, maybe less. So really, not
a big problem, easily fixed, just will take some time to start the scene.
11:23 UPDATE
Argh I just clicked on; I can’t be bringing random people to my house for the scene. My
sister caught covid yesterday so anyone I bring to mine I would knowingly be putting at risk.
Although, she is having to be locked in her room so should be alright...right? We would only
be in my room for the shots then soon as it’s over can leave. As long as I let the one involved
know about the situation at home and they’re still up for coming round for the scene then I
guess by that it should be fine. Still need to find someone to take that place like... will get
there.
12:10 UPDATE
Lightbulb moment! Rather than finding someone to bring back to mine for a scene, I have
someone who was already coming back to mine tonight and plus, he has already signed on
to be a part of the video just hasn’t had his scene filmed yet so with that in mind, mister
Keilan Ramsden could take over instead. Agreeing, a change in script will be needed. When
it came to Ellies scene, the second half would be of her being cheered up by music, dancing
6. away to it. But now that there has been change of actor, I know Keilan wouldn’t be up or
maybe even comfortable enough for the dance sequence. No problems given really; I
already have an idea in mind of how to change the second part writing the part so it’s more
fitting for him.
After tonight, only one scene will be left to record for this project. Although to be fair,
having five scenes might be a bit much? Especially for a charity related advertisement, but if
I can get the scene done then really there’s no harm in completing it. Gives me more option
for when it comes to editing, better too much than too little.
13:01 UPDATE
That’s the video completed today then! Relying that the plan unravels as set in mind that is.
Requesting a classmate, Jasmine Mcneil, to be a part of the cast-less scene she agreed to
join in following the addition of another. Then tonight, with a new script in place ready,
Keilan Ramsden will be taking over the scene written for Ellie Raine. Not a drastic change
really. Fitting the scene more for him, the ending will involve gaming. Only thing I must work
out now is where to place the music and how to fit it in as with the dance sequence the
music was going to play louder throughout the last half of the video, now without the cd
player being required for any shot it will be a tad harder to set the tunes in smoothly.
08:22 Wednesday, 19th January 2022
Being too late for a diary entry, only one scene was filmed yesterday, that being at literally
past midnight. The first shot being taken twenty-two past one in the morning, it didn’t really
take long to get the all the shots together finishing off at one fifty-four Although it did feel
like it took longer than that. Being a messy scene, we really had one chance to get it right.
Wearing a change of clothes we didn’t mind ruining, the on-screen actor had to
‘accidentally’ knock a liquid over... that liquid being a chocolate milkshake. Before capturing
the final footage, a few test runs were played out as a decision went on figuring out how to
knock the drink over with the aim of making the shot look as natural as possible, then when
ready to capture the drink being knocked a few videos were taking of the scene failing as
the cap didn’t come off when falling even though it was loosened ready.
As for the scene including the request of classmates being involved, finishing the session at
half four I had no way to contact the protagonist for the scene as the battery was flat on my
mobile device. Although it was arranged to meet at the Starbucks on campus no one turned
up, so they forgot, I guess? Or maybe I was too late getting there as I was busy collecting a
tripod and SLR camera to film and they had waited but not long enough? Either way, I don’t
really mind if the scene gets filmed it gets filmed, if not then not. I’m pretty sure I’ve got
enough shots now as it is for when it comes to stitching it all together.
14:20 Wednesday, 26th January 2022
Just a quick paragraph or two just to wrap up this filming journal. All filming has finally been
completed; no more shots are needed. That cafeteria scene I tried getting around to filming
last week before post? Well now I’m continuing without it. For one, I highly doubt it would
get shot. Plus, the advertisement would probably be extra seconds too long.
7. As for the audio file that needed recording, I have now moved on to request Ellie Raine and
her Nathan act out the argument as It doesn’t really seem I’d be getting anywhere with the
first two members. Still though, there is time to get that done.
Now onto the editing stage-
