4. Statistics
● “If we keep producing (and failing to properly dispose of) plastics at predicted
rates, plastics in the ocean will outweigh fish pound for pound in 2050, the
nonprofit foundation said in a report Tuesday,” says Sarah Kaplan in an article for
the Washington Post on a study about plastics in the ocean.
○ Directly affected by the pollution in waters connected to the ocean
○ 80% of the Chesapeake Bay’s tidal water are partially or fully impaired by
toxic contaminants
○ 331 million pounds of nitrogen and 20 million pounds of phosphorus are
delivered to the Chesapeake Bay each year
○ 5 million tons of sediment is delivered to the Chesapeake Bay each year
○ Agricultural runoff is 90% of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay
5. Statistics (continued)
● 123,040 cigarette butts, 1,130 glass bottles, 109,410 polystyrene, 109,880 plastic
bottles, and 106,640 plastic bags all end up in the Chesapeake Bay
● The National Academy Of Sciences estimated that ocean-based sources dump 14
billion pounds of garbage, mostly plastic, into the ocean yearly, and about 1
million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year due to
pollution
6. The Problem and Our Goal
● What is the Problem?
○ 80% of Chesapeake Bay is filled with pollution, including
plastic waste, chemicals, and other trash
● Our Goal:
○ To lower the amount of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay
7. Our Plan to Make A Change
● What are we going to do?
○ On the second and last Saturday of every month, we are going to host a
bay cleanup where we will invite people to cleanup the bay by picking up
harmful items left on the beach
○ We will go to different parts of the Chesapeake Bay each month
○ It will be during April-September from 12 PM to 2 PM
○ Everyone will be provided with lunch who cleans up
○ We will help cleanup the beach and then everyone can enjoy their lunch
○ People will come to a meeting if they are interested and they will be able
to sign up here for whichever days they would like to volunteer on
8. How We are Going to Accomplish Our Goal
● How are we going to do it?
○ We are going to partner with a non-profit organization
called The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)
○ They will partner with us in cleaning the beach and
provide us with the tools needed
9. Non-Profit Organization #1
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)
The EDF has many areas of focus including:
● Meeting demands for food, water, and shelter.
● Catalyzing reforms to make sustainable fishing the norm in 12 key nations that
account for 62% of the global fish catch.
● Removing obsolete rules that hamper the clean energy market in the U.S.
● And of course, they use dual levers of public policy and corporate leadership to
drive down exposure to pollutants and toxic chemicals
10. Non-Profit Organizations #1 (continued)
Environmental Defense Fund Continued
● The air we breathe is still dirty, but cleaner than it has been in decade
○ The osprey, a once endangered bird, is now thriving
○ The EDF played a major role in both of these, but so much more still needs to
be done
○ More than 125 million Americans live in places with unhealthy air and
thousands of U.S. communities are plagued by lead poisoning
● The EDF has 2 plans
○ The first is to control carbon emissions
○ The second is to stabilize the global climate, build defenses against extreme
weather, ensure food security and abundant oceans, and reduce exposure to air
pollution and toxic chemicals all by 2025
11. Non-Profit Organizations #2
Save the Bay
● Save the Bay is a independent non-profit organization
● It was founded in 1970
● Save the Bay is focused on getting oil out of oceans and bays
● The work of this organization is to rebuild and restore the habitats
affected by pollution
● Save the Bay stewards through education programs that engage
children and adults with the bay and its inhabitants
12. Why we are Passionate about Pollution Prevention
● Reduces amount of drinkable water for human, animal, and plant consumption
● Bad for human health: can transmit diseases and more than 1.2 billion people
don’t even have clean water to drink or use to wash
○ Can transmit toxins and chemicals directly into our food
○ Leading cause of sickness and death
15. Conclusion
● With your help and others in the community we can work
together to clean up Chesapeake Bay and return it to its
former glory
● If every second and last Saturday a month, multiple people
are willing to meet up and work to clean up this beautiful
bay, we can get the area more enjoyable and entertaining
● Every person that comes will be offered a free lunch after
chipping in to clean up this polluted location and help
restore it back to its gorgeous looking self
