Lychee Varities in The
World

Lychee
• Lychees are brightly colored strawberry
shaped fruits with thin large skin and sweet
musky aroma.It is fairly easy to covering off
the skin, engaging smelling white, clear flesh is
uncovered revealed. It has a unique sweet,
admirable taste with a half level acidic,
Pungent flavor. The seed in the middle can be
tiny shape, but it can be easily taken out.Its
feel is bad but it can have some unpleasant
effects on your digestive system
Emperor Lychee Fruit
• Emperor fruit is large and
hard with a fine sub-acid
sweet flavor. The Emperor is
an unusually large variety of
lychee. It is good tasting
with a large seed. The skin
(pericarp) of the fruit has
very distinct bumps. This is
a mountain variety, adapts
well to container culture
and tends to fruit
consistently
Mauritius Lychee Fruit
• Mauritiu originates in
southern China, but it is
named for the island off the
southeast coast of Africa
where extensive
commercial plantings have
been in production for
decades. It is the variety of
choice for commercial
growers in Florida because
it is a regular and heavy
producer. The fruit is sweet,
pink to red, and produces
chicken tongue seeds in
about one out of ten fruit.
Sweet Heart Lychee Fruit
• Sweet Heart is hands down
the finest lychee. It is a
consistent producer of huge
heart shaped fruit all having
chicken tongue seeds.
Production is close to that of
Mauritius inspiring small
commercial plantings by
growers targeting high-end
produce markets and gourmet
restaurants. It is quickly
becoming the variety of choice
by dooryard growers for its
reliability and superior quality.
Brewster Lychee Fruit
• Brewster is one of the most
extensively planted
commercial varieties in
Florida. The fruit is large,
deep red, and it is of
excellent eating quality. The
tree is a vigorous upright
grower that is well suited to
Florida. Like many other
lychees it tends to be an
alternate bearer producing
good crops every two out of
three years. Brewster
lychees are charming and
moist.
Haak Yip Lychee Fruit
• Haak Yip - From China.
Medium sized fruit, red,
sweet and of excellent
quality. Foliage is a dark
green color the name
means black leaf and
fruiting is fairly regular.
Large, greenish-red fruit
with delicious, crisp and
sweet taste.
Bengal Lychee Fruit
• Bengal is an excellent
tasting large fruit that is
grown commercially in
Africa and Australia.
However, irregular
bearing habits have
kept this cultivar out of
commercial orchards in
Florida. The tree is a
vigorous grower having
a spreading habit.
Souey Tung
• This is the first variety
of lychee to be
cultivated in Australia. It
is becoming more
readily available.
Available from October
to November.
Wai Chee
• Fruit has a deep red
colour with a smooth thin
skin. The fruit is round in
shape and the size will
vary as the fruit matures.
The flesh is sweet and
juicy with a good flavour.
A late fruiting variety that
grows in South-East Qld
and NSW
Kaimana
• A relatively new variety
that is in limited supply.
It is a large red fruit
with a small seed.
Available from
November to
December.
Salathiel
• Developed in Australia,
they are bright red with
a smooth skin but are
small with a very small
seed.
Available from
December to January.
Tai So
• A pretty red colour
when ripe, they are a
lovely eating fruit with a
similar taste to B3.
Available from mid
November to mid
January.
Fay Zee Siu
• A large fruit with a
sweet taste that is
picked with some green
mottling on the skin.
Available from
November to
December, it is
extremely difficult to
get commercial crops
on a regular basis.
Kwai May Pink
• A great eating lychee
developed in Australia
with a small to medium
seed.
• Available from late
November to February,
they have a red skin
with a slight orange hue
and tend to be more
round.
China :
• It is commercially
cultivated for table
purpose in Muzaffarpur
area of Bihar. It is a semi-
dwarf variety with fruits
ripening from the third
week of May. Average
yield is 80-100 kg/tree.
Fruits are mediumlarge,
globose, with a mixture of
red and orange colour.
Elachi :
• The tree is moderately
vigorous, attaining an
average height of 5 to 6
m and spread of 6-7 m.
Fruits are conical and
orange-red in colour.
The variety is cultivated
for table purpose with
an average yield of 50-
60 kg/tree.
Purbi :
• It is mostly grown for
table purpose in eastern
part of Bihar. Fruits are
medium-large, oblong-
conical in shape, which
ripen at the end of May
or first week of June. At
maturity red tubercles
appear on pinkish brown
background. The average
yield is 90-100 kg/tree.
Early Seedless
• (Syn. Early Bedana) : It is the
earliest variety and is mainly
grown for table purpose and
processing in Uttar Pradesh
and Punjab. It is a medium to
poor-yielding variety but bears
regularly. The yield of fruit
varies from 50-60 kg/tree.
Fruits are small to medium in
size, heart to oval in shape
with carmine red tubercles at
maturity. Pulp is creamy white
with T.S.S. 19.8%. Overall fruit
quality is good.
Bombai :
• This is an important commercial
variety cultivated for table
purpose in West Bengal. It ripens
during first to second week of
May. The trees are vigorous and
attain an average height of 6.7 m
and spread 7- 8 m. Average yield
is 80-90 kg/tree. Fruits are large
in size, mostly obliquely heart-
shaped colour at maturity with
carmine red tubercles on
uranium-green background. In
this variety each developed fruit
has another tiny under-
developed fruit attached to the
fruit stalk. Pulp is greyish-white,
soft juicy with T.S.S. 17%.
Calcutta (Syn. Kalkattia) :
• It is the best of all the varieties
grown in northern parts of India
for table purpose. It can be
successfully cultivated even in
hotter areas provided there is
protection from strong hot winds
and provision for plenty of water
for irrigation. The average yield is
80-100 kg/tree. It is a late season
variety and the fruits ripen in the
last week of June. Trees of this
variety attain an average height
of 4m and spread of 6 m. Fruits
are large in size, oblong, with
tyrian rose colour and dark
tubercles at maturity. Pulp is dirty
creamy white, soft, juicy, very
sweet with T.S.S. 18.17%.
Dehra Dun :
• This variety is mainly grown for
table purpose in Uttar Pradesh
and Punjab. In Bihar, it is
cultivated under the name of
'Dehra-Rose'. It is a late-season
variety and fruits start ripening in
third week of June. Fruit yield is
80-90 kg/tree. Trees are medium
in size attaining a height of 5 m
and spread of 7 m. Fruits are
medium in size, obliquely heart-
shaped to conical, colour at
maturity bright rose pink. Pulp is
greyish-white, soft moderately
juicy with T.S.S. 17%. This variety
is highly susceptible to sunburn
and cracking.
Gulabi :
• This is another important variety
cultivated for table purpose in
north India. It is a late-season
variety and fruit ripens in fourth
week of June. It bears profusely
and regularly with 90-100 kg
fruits/tree. Trees attain a height
of 6.0 m and spread of 7.0 m.
Fruits are medium in size, oblong-
oval heart-shaped, mandarin red
tubercles appear on shrimp red
to carmine red background at
maturity. Pulp is greyish white,
firm sweet with T.S.S. 18.2%

The fruit is sweet, pink to red, and produces chicken tongue seeds in about one out of ten fruit.

Production is close to that of Mauritius inspiring small commercial plantings by growers targeting high-end produce markets and gourmet restaurants. It is quickly becoming the variety of choice by dooryard growers for its reliability and superior quality.
  • 7. Brewster Lychee Fruit • Brewster is one of the most extensively planted commercial varieties in Florida. The fruit is large, deep red, and it is of excellent eating quality. The tree is a vigorous upright grower that is well suited to Florida. Like many other lychees it tends to be an alternate bearer producing good crops every two out of three years. Brewster lychees are charming and moist.
  • 8. Haak Yip Lychee Fruit • Haak Yip - From China. Medium sized fruit, red, sweet and of excellent quality. Foliage is a dark green color the name means black leaf and fruiting is fairly regular. Large, greenish-red fruit with delicious, crisp and sweet taste.

  • 10. Bengal Lychee Fruit • Bengal is an excellent tasting large fruit that is grown commercially in Africa and Australia. However, irregular bearing habits have kept this cultivar out of commercial orchards in Florida. The tree is a vigorous grower having a spreading habit.
  • 11. Souey Tung • This is the first variety of lychee to be cultivated in Australia. It is becoming more readily available. Available from October to November.
  • 12. Wai Chee • Fruit has a deep red colour with a smooth thin skin. The fruit is round in shape and the size will vary as the fruit matures. The flesh is sweet and juicy with a good flavour. A late fruiting variety that grows in South-East Qld and NSW
  • 13. Kaimana • A relatively new variety that is in limited supply. It is a large red fruit with a small seed. Available from November to December.
  • 14. Salathiel • Developed in Australia, they are bright red with a smooth skin but are small with a very small seed. Available from December to January.
  • 15. Tai So • A pretty red colour when ripe, they are a lovely eating fruit with a similar taste to B3. Available from mid November to mid January.
  • 16. Fay Zee Siu • A large fruit with a sweet taste that is picked with some green mottling on the skin. Available from November to December, it is extremely difficult to get commercial crops on a regular basis.
  • 17. Kwai May Pink • A great eating lychee developed in Australia with a small to medium seed. • Available from late November to February, they have a red skin with a slight orange hue and tend to be more round.
  • 18. China : • It is commercially cultivated for table purpose in Muzaffarpur area of Bihar. It is a semi- dwarf variety with fruits ripening from the third week of May. Average yield is 80-100 kg/tree. Fruits are mediumlarge, globose, with a mixture of red and orange colour.
  • 19. Elachi : • The tree is moderately vigorous, attaining an average height of 5 to 6 m and spread of 6-7 m. Fruits are conical and orange-red in colour. The variety is cultivated for table purpose with an average yield of 50- 60 kg/tree.
  • 20. Purbi : • It is mostly grown for table purpose in eastern part of Bihar. Fruits are medium-large, oblong- conical in shape, which ripen at the end of May or first week of June. At maturity red tubercles appear on pinkish brown background. The average yield is 90-100 kg/tree.
  • 21. Early Seedless • (Syn. Early Bedana) : It is the earliest variety and is mainly grown for table purpose and processing in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. It is a medium to poor-yielding variety but bears regularly. The yield of fruit varies from 50-60 kg/tree. Fruits are small to medium in size, heart to oval in shape with carmine red tubercles at maturity. Pulp is creamy white with T.S.S. 19.8%. Overall fruit quality is good.
  • 22. Bombai : • This is an important commercial variety cultivated for table purpose in West Bengal. It ripens during first to second week of May. The trees are vigorous and attain an average height of 6.7 m and spread 7- 8 m. Average yield is 80-90 kg/tree. Fruits are large in size, mostly obliquely heart- shaped colour at maturity with carmine red tubercles on uranium-green background. In this variety each developed fruit has another tiny under- developed fruit attached to the fruit stalk. Pulp is greyish-white, soft juicy with T.S.S. 17%.
  • 23. Calcutta (Syn. Kalkattia) : • It is the best of all the varieties grown in northern parts of India for table purpose. It can be successfully cultivated even in hotter areas provided there is protection from strong hot winds and provision for plenty of water for irrigation. The average yield is 80-100 kg/tree. It is a late season variety and the fruits ripen in the last week of June. Trees of this variety attain an average height of 4m and spread of 6 m. Fruits are large in size, oblong, with tyrian rose colour and dark tubercles at maturity. Pulp is dirty creamy white, soft, juicy, very sweet with T.S.S. 18.17%.
  • 24. Dehra Dun : • This variety is mainly grown for table purpose in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. In Bihar, it is cultivated under the name of 'Dehra-Rose'. It is a late-season variety and fruits start ripening in third week of June. Fruit yield is 80-90 kg/tree. Trees are medium in size attaining a height of 5 m and spread of 7 m. Fruits are medium in size, obliquely heart- shaped to conical, colour at maturity bright rose pink. Pulp is greyish-white, soft moderately juicy with T.S.S. 17%. This variety is highly susceptible to sunburn and cracking.
  • 25. Gulabi : • This is another important variety cultivated for table purpose in north India. It is a late-season variety and fruit ripens in fourth week of June. It bears profusely and regularly with 90-100 kg fruits/tree. Trees attain a height of 6.0 m and spread of 7.0 m. Fruits are medium in size, oblong- oval heart-shaped, mandarin red tubercles appear on shrimp red to carmine red background at maturity. Pulp is greyish white, firm sweet with T.S.S. 18.2%
