What is high blood pressure?
You probably have high blood pressure (hypertension) if your blood pressure
readings are consistently 140 over 90, or higher, over a number of weeks.
You may also have high blood pressure if just one of the numbers is higher than it
should be over a number of weeks.
If you have high blood pressure, this higher pressure puts extra strain on your
heart and blood vessels. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart
attack or stroke.
High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease, and is closely linked
to some forms of dementia.
6. Measuring Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the
arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure, sometimes
called hypertension, happens when this force is too high. Health care
workers check blood pressure readings the same way for children,
teens, and adults. They use a gauge, stethoscope or electronic
sensor, and a blood pressure cuff. With this equipment, they
measure:
Systolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart beats while
pumping blood
Diastolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart is at rest between
beats

8. What are the signs and symptoms of high
blood pressure?
High blood pressure usually has no signs or symptoms, so
the only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to
have yours measured. However, a single high reading does
not necessarily mean you have high blood pressure. Many
things can affect your blood pressure through the day, so
your doctor will take a number of blood pressure readings
to see that it stays high over time.
Occasionally people with very high blood pressure say they
experience headaches, but it is best to visit your GP if you
are concerned about symptoms.

For most people, there may be no single
cause for their high blood pressure. We do
not know exactly what causes high blood
pressure. We do know that your lifestyle
can affect your risk of developing it. You
are at a higher risk if:

12. Types of High Blood Pressure
There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood
pressure.
Primary High Blood Pressure
Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure.
This type of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages.
Secondary High Blood Pressure
Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain
medicines. This type usually resolves after the cause is treated or removed.

13. What high blood pressure (hypertension) can do
High blood pressure (hypertension) puts extra strain on your heart and blood
vessels. This can cause them to become weaker or damaged.
The higher your blood pressure, the higher your risk of serious health
problems in the future. High blood pressure can affect your body in a number
of ways:
Your heart: high blood pressure can cause you to have a heart attack. It can
also cause heart failure.
Your brain: high blood pressure is a leading cause of strokes. It has also been
closely linked to some forms of dementia.
Your kidneys: high blood pressure can cause kidney disease.
Your limbs: high blood pressure can cause peripheral arterial disease, which
can affect your legs.
