2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy ā some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donāt like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. SONG AND IDEAS
Song picked- lucid dreams (Juice WRLD)
3 ideas-
Idea 1- Start with a boy and girl who are dating then
show a break up then her with a another lad. ;inks to his
lyrics in the song.
2- Show friends together then show how the wrong
people can lead you paths you donāt want. Boy ends up
in a grave
3- Use some plastic because people can find behind
certain things and plastic can have fakes.
6. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 ā add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
Youāve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
7. SONG 1- SUCKER FOR PAIN
Video made for the film Suicide Squad.
Beginning shows the inside of a jail cell linking to the
film
As the video goes on they include clips from the film to
show a meaning behind the lyrics.
The video also has a focus on who is singing at that time
Editing is good because it is a continues change between
artists and film.
8. SONG 2- THE HILLS
Artist- The Weekend
Camera work tries to show his true emotions while
singing the lyrics. Also tries to follow his moves but stay
ahead then drop behind.
His performance is incredible because he has a
exploding car behind him but still stays on focus and
shows emotion via the lyrics.
The design of the video is linking to the lyrics and by
doing this the watcher really feels the mood.
9. SONG 3- NEVER GONNA GIVE
YOU UP
Artist- Rick Astley
This video is very basic but yet effective. Rick is just
dancing in different locations but is showing emotions in
his voice rather than a dramatic video.
The camera work cutting between Rick and the other
people in the under in good because it shows different
perspectives of people vibing to the song.
10. SONG 4- THE OTHER SIDE
Artist- Hugh Jackman And Zac Effron (from the greatest
showman)
I love the performance in this video because they both
have different stories and wealth but it doesnāt matter all
that matters in their emotions.
The camera is basic just focusing on the pair of them
singing their respective parts but builds up when they
start moving around and getting more into song.
The design is also clever because they make the song
build up before they hit the climax point and then the
whole mood changes.
11. SONG 5- TRAP QUEEN
Artist- Fetty Wap
This video has little to do. Editing is just between Fetty
and the others in the video.
Camera always is on Fetty then quickly flips to someone
else.
I like this because rap can be difficult to understand but
with a basic yet good video you can listen and react to
the lyrics and the true meaning.
14. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
Close up shots
Not showing my face. So use a mask or covering(not due
to covid but its fitting)
Different surroundings
15. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Make sure it has a meaning to a heartfelt personal
experience.
For me about losing my best mate when I caught him
with my girlfriend.
Use areas that are special to me. So like a place I go with
friends when feeling upset.
Use old pictures of travels for affect.
16. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Have multiple settings so easy to adapt
Experience is easy to remember so can use that for good
strong lyrics
Have friends who I can ask to help act in the video
Have good confidence in myself
Have good taste in music.
18. FINAL IDEA ā
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Robbery/ Juice WRLD
Born December 2nd 1998 and died December 8th 2019.
Hip Hop music/Rap
Real name- Jarad Anthony Higgins. Born in Chicago,
Illnois.
Death- suffered a seizure when police were searching his
private jet after it landed in Chicago. Overdose by
painkillers.
19. FINAL IDEA ā TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The pace is medium to fast pace. Style is rap. The
meaning is a guy who has made a mistake with the girl
he loved and now is dealing with the after issues like
drugs and drinking.
The song is 4 minutes long.
His lyrics are saying how girls will tell a boy they love
them then will bring pain to the boy when she cheats or
ends the relationship.
20. FINAL IDEA ā YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My idea is to show different sides of a breakup so
despite Juiceās lyrics show some positivity but try to
focus on the negatives like drugs and drinking.
So using his lyrics the locations can be picked based on
those.
22. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
23. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
24. LOCATIONS
For me I want to film in locations where Iāve suffered a
personal issue like a breakup or rejection but also a
place where I go to feel safe with the guys and let it all
out. Near where I live there is the rec which has massive
field, a park and a community center. This is where we
used to go after school to practice either our football
skills or my throwing distancing with an American
football and after a while we would go sit in the park and
just chat about our lives and I always felt safe there with
them. This also means I can use the sports I love in the
video like I did back then after a day at school.
After suffering some issues during the week of filming I
couldnāt use my original plan so I decided to film at
Whitby but also in my garden. These places still link to
my personal issues because home is where I can open to
my family and the beach is a great place to go and get
away from all those issues.
My backup locations are manor (old secondary) because thatās where I
tired to re build after going separate ways from my friends from fog
and manor did allow me to meet now my closest friends but also find
love then suffer heartbreak and thatās why I picked it because the lyrics
in robbery about āshe said I love you firstā links well to those
experiences meaning I can put greater emotion into it.
25. EQUIPMENT
Iād need a camera with good audio quality. Outside of
college I can get a friend to film unless I decide on a
tripod. Clothing my choice and props also mine choice.
My dads company could help me with some equipment
especially if I decide to use a phone for any of the filming
because they work by off hiring phones to people.
26. FACILITIES
I have a laptop at home which I have edited YouTube
videos on when I did some YouTube. All I need is the
laptop and the videos that need putting together, cutting
bits out, adding effects if wanted. Iām just to editing so I
know how to get the best possible outcome.
Or using the equipment I can find maybe at college like
the macs.
27. PERSONNEL
CREW: Due to new Covid rules my idea of using my
friends couldnāt go ahead so I decided to have my dad
catch some passes while my mum and sister film. It does
take away my original idea of showing heartbreak but the
song sums that up and I still feel my NFL footage shows
how I escape these issues when they pop up in my life.
CAST: My family are always willing to help me. Since my
sister and mum arenāt really into sport to meant they
could focus on the filming and let me and my dad focus
on nailing our throws and our catching.
28. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Props- I want to show my life about a break up and how sports have helped me through
the darkest times. So Iāll have a football and an American Football. Both I play and love.
Costume- Iām not the type who has 150 pound shoes or Gucci items and I wonāt change
for this either. So weather depending the items Iām thinking shorts, T Shirt, Hoodie,
Coat. Then also have sports shirts so use one of my Liverpool shirts and my Jacksonville
Jaguars jersey. Reason been these are the teams I support in there respective sports,
both sports are also dreams for me growing wanting to play for Liverpool to now
wanting to wear the teal jersey of Jacksonville. This means Iā, staying true to who I am
and no matter how much pain I suffer from I donāt change myself just to stand a chance
of either getting a new girlfriend or winning back the ex. If you canāt love yourself for
who you truly are then your not going to be able to love anyone else. To me change can
only come from within and if you change for a person you arenāt your true self.
All these show my true self and personality and to me thatās the best thing about me
the fact how matter how much or hard I get hurt I refuse to change myself and just turn
to physical activities. Since been a little boy sport has been important to me because
everyone can play a certain sport and no matter how hurt you may be at the time you
just get to play and release it all. American football is great because there is more
contact meaning depending on where you play you can take anger out in tackles. As a
quarterback I get my anger out by throwing deep shots or throwing bullet pass because
the faster and harder I throw the more anger is let out. I also let anger out after games
by celebrating with the guys after games, to me team are more important than love.
30. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you āpre-visualiseā the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ļ Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ļ Storyboarding
ļ Shot list
31. PRE-VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the ālook & feelā
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the āmise-en-sceneā
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
32. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
33. ROBBERY- JUICE WRLD
Chorus
She told me put my heart in a bag
And nobody gets hurt
Now Iām running from her love, Iām not fast
So Iām making it worse
Now Iām digging up a grave, from my past
Iām a whole different person
Itās a gift and a curse
But I cannot reverse it
Used 3 times. After intro, verse 1, verse 2
and 3.
So chorus ends the song.
Introduction
Man, what
This (explicit) funny
I was like of this
Hennessy strong as
(explicit), boy
My initial ideas for the
introduction was to keep
it small and boring before
the beat really kicks in
and my true emotions can
be shown. I feel like a
good beginning sets the
tone for you to build on a
set foundation and really
allows you to show your
true emotions to the
lyrics. With the chorus I
tend to stay covered up so
34. VERSE 1
I canāt reverse it
It was a gift and a curse
And now Iām drinking too much, so Iāma talk with a slur
Last time I saw you it ended in a blur
I woke up in a hearse
She said āyou loved me firstā
One thing my dad told me was ānever let your woman know when your
insecureā
So I put Gucci on the fur
And I put my wrist on iceberg
One thing my heart tells me is āflex on a hoe every time theyāre
insecure
I guess you came through
Iām running from you
Was your love for real
Is your love really true
My plan for these lyrics are to show how a
breakup affected me and the lows I hit. The
lyrics about āyou loved me firstā thatās where
Iāll step things up emotionally and show how
badly it hurt a the beginning. The Gucci lyric
Iām overlooking because I donāt like to wear
really expensive things because I prefer girls
35. VERSE 2
You gave me the runaround
I really hate the runaround
You really got me paranoid
I always keep a gun around
You always give me butterflies
When you come around
When you come around
When you come around
These are kind of important because I have been paranoid about girl before and it
has seriously affected me. My ideas for this are mixed because you have different
emotions for each lyric. The butterfly lyric is the main lyric I want to focus on
because it means a lot because even though you and that person arenāt together any
more when you do see them there is still a respect and a sense of pride. Repeating
the same lyrics 3 times to end the verse really make an emotional impact because
you would think after a break up you wouldnāt want to see that person you when she
sees you and you see there there is still that overwhelming pride and love for them
despite your current situation. And this feeling will always be strong no matter what
36. VERSE 3
You let me know love is not the answer
Not the answer, not the answer
I love to do drugs so mind my manners
I get high when you donāt decide to answer
Phone home, I need to phone home
Iām throwing rocks at your window, I need to go home
I donāt wanna leave
I just wanna be with you
You,you,you
Now we move to the negative parts of thinking youāll never love again
and the fact that some people instead of talking will drink and do drugs
which may lead to death. The last 4 lines are very emotional because
juice is saying that despite needing to go home but he doesnāt want to
leave without talking to the one and he has the urge to want to be with
them despite all the challenges that he faces. These also prove to me
that after a breakup the best thing to do is get out with friends instead
of allowing yourself to slip and start drinking and ending with an
37. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
ļ https://www.storyboardthat.com
ļ http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
ļ http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
Storyboard saved on storyboardthat.
38. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

41. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
42. LOCATIONS
The rec/ Rawcliffe recreational centre
Address- St marks grove. Rawcliffe,
York YO30 5TS
Grass is an open space so no
permission is needed
Inside the centre holds no memories
for me so wonāt need to enter inside
meaning permission is required.
Easy for me to access and get my
team there
Quiet at night and at point during the
days when little ones are at school.
And when there is not a football game
43. IMAGES
These pictures link to my video because
the top right is Anfield the home of
Liverpool fc and football is the sport I
love and have played for the last 8 years
and it has allowed to take my frustration
out. The other two pictures are my
dream. The bottom left is a quarterback
and this is my all time dream to wear
the Teal jersey of the Jacksonville
Jaguars and throw passes that lead to
moments like the top right image. In
robbery juice says about Gucci helping
44. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
45. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk How to
prevent it
Damage it
may cause
How to make
sure it
doesnāt
happen
again
Rabbit Holes Make sure
filming is done
in a safe area
without any
holes
Broken bones,
fractures,
sprains etc
Maybe use a
different
location without
the risk of rabbit
holes
Children
playing
games
Make sure you
film during
school hours or
use a quiet area
Sound
interferences,
kids in the shots
Maybe film in
different
weather so less
people are out
or use
somewhere not
close to a school
Weather
Hazards
Make sure you
know the
weather forecast
before filming
May damage or
break the
equipment vital
to film with
Check the
weather or
adjust and move
somewhere else
46. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
47. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Technical-
Equipment using may have faults
May die during an important part of filming
If the weather is poor the shots will be affected by rain on the lens
Location-
Weather can mess the ground up
Timings are vital
We are in a pandemic so distance
Personnel-
People can miss days
In a pandemic so 2 metre distance
Family can easily have days out
Organisational-
I have in the past planned something completely forgotten about it.
As itās my project Iāll have to make sure Iām ready and not cause thinking ah theyāll do it
48. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youāre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
49. SCHEDULE- BEGINNING OF FILMING
First day of filming week, go through all photos from holidays to
New York and Cornwall to find best ones. Select a good few so each
can be put in the video and then tested to see which combinations
look best with the footage to be added in after.
Man, what? (Haha)
This s**t funny
I was like, "Oof this Hennessy strong as f**k, boy"
Images will run over these lyrics just to give the video a foundation to
build on with the footage still to be added in.
No props or first person footage used because Hennessy is alcohol and I
donāt see a point buying a bottle for no reason.
50. Schedule- Days 2-3
Day 2
Weather depending start going out
with the ball and camera and begin
getting the first bits of footage to run
after the first set of images.
Try to film extra footage as the lyrics
this footage will run over is the chorus
so that Is repeated so add in extra
footage to be on the safe side for
when it comes to editing.
She told me put my heart in
the bag (In the bag)
And nobody gets hurt
(Nobody)
Now I'm running from her
love, I'm not fast (Fast)
So I'm making it worse
(Making it worse)
Now I'm digging up a grave,
from my past
I'm a whole different person (A
whole different person)
It's a gift and a curse (A gift
and a curse)
But I cannot reverse it
Day 3
Film some transitions of me going from
one shirt to another, I feel like for the
audience I want the video to target this
would be a good idea as TikTok is rather
big and transitions are used in those rather
often so I feel like it would allow people to
understand the audience I'm aiming at.
Also with Covid TikTok gave people a way
to express themselves and I love that.
51. SCHEDULE DAYS 4-5
Day 4
Watch back already filmed footage to make sure all looks good and
is useable. If I feel like I need some safe to be safe go out film
more then come back and watch it all again to make sure I like it
all and once it is time to edit and use some of the footage I know
already which ones to me look best to go along with the music.
Also go back through pictures from my experience of going to an
NFL game in London 2019.
Day 5
Film final pieces of footage at a new location then watch it back on
the camera and if more is needed film some more short sharp clips
instead of longer ones. Get back home and watch through every
single piece of footage and pick a selected few which I think are the
best (can change).
52. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your video
must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and insert here
The rec and the beach are open and free spaces meaning
I didnāt need permission and I live in my house so again
no need. All I needed at home was to make sure my mum
and sister knew I was filming so they didnāt walk in
during me filming.
The beach footage I was fussed about having people in
the background itās a beach so I wasnāt going to run
round telling people sorry you canāt walk in this area
while I film.
