Dear Florida DECA,
It is our pleasure to introduce you to the 2009-2010 Florida DECA Program of Work.
During this golden year your State Action Team encourages you to live with purpose,
learn as a way of life, and lead to make a difference. As you continue to “Live, Learn
and Lead” this year, we encourage you to complete the goals set forth in the Program of
Work. Each objective is designed to increase participation, membership, community,
and school involvement.
The following pages contain the goals for executing your DECA experience. Once
again, each chapter’s requirements are based on the four points of the DECA diamond:
civic consciousness, social intelligence, leadership development, and vocational
understanding. These categories will not only represent your chapter’s achievements,
but will also instill the philosophies that our organization was founded upon.
In an effort to increase participation awards will be presented at the State CDC in
recognition of your endeavors to reach the different levels of achievement. To claim the
“Bronze Recognition”, a chapter must complete a minimum of one goal from each of the
four points. To attain “Silver Recognition”, a chapter must complete at least two goals
from each point. In order to receive a plaque on stage and the title of “Gold
Recognition”, a chapter must complete at least three of the goals from each point.
As state officers, we challenge you to express your enthusiasm as you work towards
making a difference in your chapters and communities. With the added incentive of
exaltation, we expect chapters to exude excellence.
Sincerely,
Your State Action Team

Civic Consciousness
Canned Food Drive
Each member of Chapter X is required to bring in a minimum of one non-perishable
canned good. After the drive is completed, the chapter may donate the cans to any
selected non-profit organization of its choice.
Pet Food Drive
Each member of Chapter X is required to bring in a minimum of one animal
canned/bagged goods or any other animal supplies (i.e. blankets, towels, kitty litter,
etc). After the drive is completed the chapter may donate the collected items to any
selected non-profit organization of their choice.
Toy Drive
Each member of Chapter X is required to bring in toys for a needy family/child, or make
a contribution to a major toy purchase. Once the drive is completed, the chapter may
donate its items to any selected non-profit organization of its choice.
MDA
Chapter X is required to participate in any fundraising activity that supports the efforts of
the Muscular Dystrophy Association (i.e. selling shamrocks or footballs). Each member
of Chapter X is required to collect a minimum of $1.
Donate to Charity
Chapter X is required to donate a minimum of five dollars to a charity per registered
members. It has to be a creditable charity (Make a Wish Foundation, American Cancer
Society). For example, Chapter Membership x $5.00= Required Amount.
DECA Gives Back
Each member of Chapter X must perform a minimum of two hours of community service
or its equivalent to achieve this goal. Qualifying hours must be preformed to benefit a
charitable or not-for-profit organization.
Completing these events will provide the chapter members with a greater sense
of civic consciousness. By taking an active role in helping their communities and
helping established organizations that complete these activities on an annual
basis the members will gain personal insight and understanding of the growing
needs in their immediate surroundings.
Social Intelligence Goals
Attend a Local Civic Club Meeting
To remain active in the community, Chapter X will be represented at local civic club
meetings. Possible civic clubs include the Rotary club, Kiwanis club, Lion’s club, City
Council Meetings, Chamber of Commerce, etc. This will give DECA members the
chance to participate in social networks outside of school.
Business Dress Day
Chapter X will hold a professional business dress day at least once during the school
year. Students will be required to dress as if they were at a DECA conference. By
dressing professionally, students will promote DECA to other clubs and classes
throughout their school and become familiar with proper business attire.
Chapter Social Event
Chapter X will be recognized for holding any type of social event. These functions can
include a business luncheon, officer initiation, club trip, or end of the year banquet. This
provides a social setting for all of the chapter’s members to interact with one another.
Joint-Chapter Activities
To increase communication among chapters, Chapter X will participate in a joint activity
with Chapter Y. For example, the chapters could hold a picnic, softball game, beach
day, etc. It would allow different members from various chapters to interact and learn
about the similarities between them.
DECA Week
Participate in at least three DECA week activities during October 11th
– 17th
. These are
special activities to promote your DECA chapter and encourage all of your marketing
students in your school to become members of DECA.
Competitive Event Tutoring
Over the course of the fiscal period the chapter officers of Chapter X will host at least 5
tutoring sessions. Two chapter officers must be present at all tutoring sessions.
Create and Maintain a Chapter Website
Chapter X must start and maintain a chapter website. This website should include
important dates of activities, chapter officer contact, and links for the Florida DECA and
National DECA websites. Once site has been established Florida DECA officers must
be notified for verification purposes.
Completing these goals will increase social intelligence. Being able to interact in
a communal manner will strengthen relations among members and advisors,
while also instilling an increased sense of pride within districts.
Leadership Development Goals
Attend a DECA Leadership Conference
Chapter X is required to have representation at a minimum of one DECA conference:
Fall Leadership Conference, Southern Region Leadership Development Conference or
Senior Management, Leadership Development Academy or Officer Leadership
Development Academy at the International Career Development Conference.
Member of the Month
Chapter X will recognize one member per month who has demonstrated strong
leadership skills through participation in a leadership role in their chapter (i.e. chairing a
committee, planning a DECA event, or organizing a DECA fundraiser).
Give a DECA Presentation at your school
Chapter X is required to have a minimum of one presentation during school promoting
your DECA chapter (i.e. assembly, video presentation, announcement, etc.)
State Officer Visit
Chapter X will host at least one member of the state action team to visit the chapter and
address the ongoing activities of Florida DECA.
Organize a School-Wide Event
Chapter X will organize an event (i.e. a fashion show, talent show, charity event) that
will involve the entire school without help from other clubs or organizations. This will
help develop leaders because of the responsibilities involved in organizing and
implementing an event this large.
Chapter Orientation
Chapter X will organize a web or phone conference with the State Action Team.
Chapter X will have to contact a state officer to arrange a web or phone conference.
This will help chapters establish direct lines of communication and develop a sense of
collaboration with their State Action Team
Completing these activities will allow members to develop better leadership skills
by participating in events that encourage them to demonstrate their abilities to
lead effectively and observe skills necessary to inspire leadership, in others.
Vocational Understanding Goals
DECA Career Day
Chapter X must contact a local colligate or professional sports team and arrange a
career day. This must entail a lecture from an employee, as well as a tour of the
stadium or venue.
Business Speaker at School
Chapter X will have a speaker visit its chapter at school to discuss marketing, careers,
or institutions of higher education. This will allow DECA members to gain practical
insight into beyond high school.
Chapter Tour of a Business
Chapter X will tour a business of its choice to gain an insider perspective of the daily
tasks and components involved in running a business.
Donate Money to the Ed Fleming Memorial Scholarship
Chapter X will be required to donate a minimum of $1 per DECA member in its chapter
to the Ed Fleming Memorial Scholarship. This donation will allow for more scholarships
to be given at the State CDC. To claim this goal, money must be received by Dr.
Levenhagen at Lyman High School by February 1, 2010. The chapter that donates the
most to the scholarship will receive a plaque to be awarded at the State CDC.
Form a Business Partnership
Forming a business partnership encompasses the development of a bond between your
chapter and a business. These relationships allow students to network with local
businesses and create public relations. Forming a business partnership with your
chapter is beneficial for students by teaching them communication and networking
skills.
Operate a School-Based Enterprise
Chapter X is required to be involved in a school-based enterprise that will demonstrate
its business and marketing skills. For example: operating the school store, concession
stand, blood drive, etc.
The goal of vocational understanding can be accomplished by completing these
tasks. Implementation of these goals can help members to further their
understanding of marketing, management, and entrepreneurship.
2009-2010 Florida DECA Program of Work
Verification Form
Please verify the achievement of a goal by recording the date that each goal has been
completed. In addition, attach a brief description of each goal attained, creating a one page
summary for each point represented in the DECA diamond from the Program of Work.
Please include a copy of your Chapters membership roster. This is due to Dr. Levenhagen
by February 2, 2010.

By dressing professionally, students will promote DECA to other clubs and classes throughout their school and become familiar with proper business attire.
