                     Dr. Seuss Lorax Challenge Winners

Youth Venture recently launched a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the Lorax Challenge, which allowed
youth from across the nation to submit ideas on how to improve the environment. The five Grand Prize
Winners received an all expense paid trip to the University of Florida for an Environmental Boot Camp,
held August 1-4.

And the Winners Are....

1,000 Trees Project Gallows Run Tree Squad - The Team endeavors to combat global
warming by planting 1,000 trees in their community.

Climate Action Club - The Team will install energy efficient software on all of their
campus computers. Also, they will install vending machines in their school to help reduce
energy.

Fielder's Choice: Making More than Just the Outfields Green - The Team will implement an annual "Green
Day" celebration at the Washington Nationals' baseball stadium. The event will serve as a way to help reduce
the stadium's carbon footprint and educate fans about eco-responsibility.

Going Green Computers and Consulting - The Team facilitates the recycling of old computers. The Venture
works with companies that take in the recycled computers to be refurbished, which are then brought into
schools and communities that are in need of newer technology.

Sustainable Water Recycling System - The Team aims to create a water recycling system that uses rain
barrels, a natural purification system, and natural refrigeration that allows rain water to be used for sustainable
gardening.

Venture Spotlight...Starring
Pure Water

Launched in February 2008, Pure Water Vending spotlights the shortage of clean, safe drinking water around
the world. Jane, Melia and Noelle from Merrimack, NH purchased a vending machine
and stocked it with bottled water at a local dance studio. The team will also sell
bottled water at popular community events.

Proceeds from sales will be donated to Pure Water for the World, a non-profit
organization that installs water purifying sand filters in remote villages
internationally. The Venture Team will make donations in $75 increments, which is
the cost of one water purifying system. Pure Water Vending was launched through
the United Way of Greater Nashua -Youth Venture partnership.

Meet an Ashoka Fellow
Ashoka is the global association of the world's leading social entrepreneurs-men and women with system
changing solutions for the world's most urgent social problems. Ashoka developed the concept of Youth
Venture from understanding a key insight of Ashoka Fellows in the field of youth development: one of the most
effective ways to improve the lives of youth is to empower them to realize their own ability to make positive
social change. Periodically, we present an Ashoka Fellow and her/his work to you.

Charlie Murphy - Power of Hope
Langley, Washington
Year Elected as a Fellow: 2005

Charlie Murphy believes that the energy and voices of young people are needed to help
build a world that works for everybody. Charlie is preparing adults to interact with youth
in ways that put youth in the center, encouraging their leadership and helping them
become agents of change in their communities. Through intergenerational learning
programs, the Power of Hope partners youth - successful and struggling - with visionary
adults. The relationship enables adults to unleash the creativity and entrepreneurial
qualities of youth. Teens and adult mentors use art as the medium for expression to
open up to one another through dance, music, and poetry. He encourages youth to
discover their own creativity and sense of purpose and to develop their leadership skills.
They return to their communities prepared to speak out about and take action on issues
that matter to them, assuming leadership roles that will help them develop into the
social entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

In 2007 Charlie created a new organization, Partnership for Youth Empowerment (PYE) to further the spread of
best practices for youth engagement globally. Through PYE, Charlie is bringing his unique training approach to
communities and groups in the US, UK, and East Africa. In Uganda he mentors a growing team of young
professionals from large and small organizations to become leading social artists able to train others in practices
that engage the imagination, participation and commitment of young people. In the UK, Charlie leads a diverse
network of individuals and groups to establish LIFEbeat, a youth empowerment program based on the Power of
Hope model. In the US, Charlie has worked closely with organizations such as the US Youth Venture team to
integrate creative practices and powerful facilitation skills into the program model.

Meet an Ashoka Fellow Ashoka is the global association of the world's leading social entrepreneurs-men and women with system changing solutions for the world's most urgent social problems. Ashoka developed the concept of Youth Venture from understanding a key insight of Ashoka Fellows in the field of youth development: one of the most effective ways to improve the lives of youth is to empower them to realize their own ability to make positive social change. Periodically, we present an Ashoka Fellow and her/his work to you. Charlie Murphy - Power of Hope
  • 5. Langley, Washington Year Elected as a Fellow: 2005 Charlie Murphy believes that the energy and voices of young people are needed to help build a world that works for everybody. Charlie is preparing adults to interact with youth in ways that put youth in the center, encouraging their leadership and helping them become agents of change in their communities. Through intergenerational learning programs, the Power of Hope partners youth - successful and struggling - with visionary adults. The relationship enables adults to unleash the creativity and entrepreneurial qualities of youth. Teens and adult mentors use art as the medium for expression to open up to one another through dance, music, and poetry. He encourages youth to discover their own creativity and sense of purpose and to develop their leadership skills. They return to their communities prepared to speak out about and take action on issues that matter to them, assuming leadership roles that will help them develop into the social entrepreneurs of tomorrow. In 2007 Charlie created a new organization, Partnership for Youth Empowerment (PYE) to further the spread of best practices for youth engagement globally. Through PYE, Charlie is bringing his unique training approach to communities and groups in the US, UK, and East Africa. In Uganda he mentors a growing team of young professionals from large and small organizations to become leading social artists able to train others in practices that engage the imagination, participation and commitment of young people. In the UK, Charlie leads a diverse network of individuals and groups to establish LIFEbeat, a youth empowerment program based on the Power of Hope model. In the US, Charlie has worked closely with organizations such as the US Youth Venture team to integrate creative practices and powerful facilitation skills into the program model.
