MATERIAL BASED ACTIVITY
Web –based Evaluation of conjunction usage by BBA(Banking) students in
paragraph writing and their fundamental knowledge of Clauses
FAST-NU Lahore campus.

Evaluation of the conjunction use
by ESL learners
■ The focus of the activity was to give basic fundamental knowledge of conjunctions ,
Clauses to the ESL learners while writing a paragraph .
 procedure for the Activity conduction was divided into three main parts by the activity
conductors in this group work ,
 Short pre-evaluation presentation about the definition of conjunction , sentence structure , and its
major types and focus of the Quiz .
 Hands on the activity at

 Post evaluation presentation on the significance of cohesive connectors , their use and points to
be noted while writing a paragraph and essay .
 Diagnostic test of the participants: The classification of the group in this activity was based
on the diagnostic test by asking them to write a paragraph about “college life” and it was
found out that they lack basic knowledge of clause and conjunction use in paragraph writing
and have average knowledge about various parts of speech
 statement of the problem : In their paragraph / essay writing there is a problem about use
of conjunction / cohesive connectors .
 Motivational factor :
■ Pearls don't lie on the seashore , If you want one, you must dive for it. - Chinese Saying
 Conjunction wheel of fortune game : After the quiz the participants showed interest in the
whole activity and they also played game to practice cohesive connectors at their own as this
activity was learner driven .
 Objectives of the Activity : The objectives of the activity was to promote ICT material
based activity by using Integrated approach and self-directed learning at the level of ESL
 The secondary objective was to enhance the cohesive connectors usage by the ESL learners
using this web based Quiz and conjunction wheel game .
 To make the complex concepts of clauses , conjunction and punctuation usage interesting
and easier by this CALL activity .
Feed back from the participants
 The participants showed great interest in this activity and over all verbal feedback was
positive
 It is also reflected in their evaluation results as most of the scored 100%
 They were motivated to play conjunction wheel game and they were willing to practice their
parts of speech usage in future as they appreciated the selection of web-based source and

LIMITATIONS ;
 The time constraints , small number of sample and internet connection were some
limitations which acted as ICT barriers in this CALL activity
 RESULTS :
The results of the activity was positive and encouraging and there is an improvement in the
scores of the learners in the second attempt , and it showed that they are now well aware of the
basic concepts of Conjunction usage its role in the clauses and about the significance of
conjunction usage in their essay writing , report and synopsis writing .There is an improvement
in the overall performance of the participants
