Training for English Language teachers : issues and concerns
Julian Edge : University of the Manchester, Uk
Steve Mann : University of Warwick , UK
Presenter : Ahmad Mashhood
2. Focus of the writing
• The focus of this annotation are six major points as reflected in the detail
The written article is a literature review of various research articles included
in the innovations book(2013) series by the Editors of this global publication
project from the Platform of the British council ,
Dr. Julian Dr. Steve Mann have a an extensive experience of ELT especially
in the context of English as Foreign language . Their research articles have
extensive focus on ELT pedagogy and innovative reflective practice on the
part of ELT teachers and Trainers .
3. The Primary objective of the article was to describe some issues and
concerns about the practicality of the innovation in the education and training
for English Language teachers .
The secondary purpose of this literature review report was to promote
critical reflective practices in the providence of Pre-service education and
training on the part of ELT trainers , Practitioners as well as educators .
4. In the first half of the article Steve Mann's focus was on the basic
components of the innovation , traditional perspective about it, its
effectiveness and factors which are acting as barriers , Reflection on the core
definition of the innovation .He stressed on RP (reflective practice ) and
importance of context in the implementation of innovations in English
language teaching .( Holliday’s 1994)
“Best practice ‘’ towards “praxis ” . And he stressed we should develop
flexible ELT tools for this purpose , which we can tailor to specific context .
5. What is innovation ?
These parts are essential constituents of innovation
detail introduction ,implementation , and evaluation of their efforts
It’s the realization of an “idea in action” for Example “ Formative assessment
in Senegal ( Mawa Samb:2013) .
Examples of “ kaizen’’ Represents the true innovation as promoted by the
authors
and Icarus and Narcissus are counter productive and requires reflective
collaboration( Julian :2011)
6. Julian’ s approach towards innovation was much general as compare to
Steve , as it has influence of interaction with non –native ELT trainers that’s
why he is preaching to consider the , Political, Neo-Colonialism and
Globalization , Hegemony and Paradox , Social justice and Multilingual
approaches .
The major stand points of the authors are in fact aligned with each other
because both perspectives lead to the same point which is of course
innovation in ELT pedagogy through reflective practice. But Julian approach
is much Broder and requires more reflection form teachers and trainers .This
can open new doors of research as he stressed on it by leaving behind
questions on which reflection is required
7. The audience of the authors was all the teachers’ trainers researches and ELT
Practitioners and language of the writing was simple and comprehensible .
The issues and concerns discussed in the article are quite important areas of
ELT and need to be addressed as it will open new dimensions in the ELT
research especially in the modification of ELT methodologies . Which will
help the new generations of English language teachers all over the world
