2. NUTRITION
Nutrition is the science that
interprets the interaction of
nutrients and other substances in
food in relation to maintenance ,
growth , reproduction , health and
disease of an organism.
3. BALANCED DIET
Balanced diet is a combination
of different varieties of
nutrients . To maintain good
health and physical efficiency
the diet should contain
adequate amount of all
nutrients .
4. A poor diet may cause health problems
, causing deficiency diseases such as
blindness , anemia , scurvy ,preterm
birth , stillbirth , cretinism , cardio
vascular disease , diabetes ,
osteoporosis . A poor diet can cause the
wasting of kwashiorkor in acute cases ,
and the stunting of marasmus in
chronic cases of malnutrition.
5. HISTORY
The first recorded dietary advice ,
carved into a Babylonian stone tablet in
about 2500 BC , cautioned those with
pain inside to avoid eating onions for
three days . Scurvy , later found to be a
vitamin C deficiency , was first
described in 1500 BC in the Ebers
Papyrus.
6. NUTRIENTS
Nutrient is a substance that
provides nourishment essential for
the maintenance of life and for
growth
7. TWO TYPES OF NUTRIENTS
1.Macronutrients
2.Micronutrients
8. MACRONUTRIENTS
It is a type of food required in large
amounts in the diet.The main
macronutrients are ,
1.Carbohydrates
2.Fats
3.Proteins
9. CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates contain carbon ,
hydrogen and oxygen. The main
function of carbohydrate in the body is
to provide energy.
Sources: Rice , Potatoes , Sugarcane ,
Wheat , Dates , Bread sugar , Beef etc.
10. FAT
Fat is a component used in the production
of several hormones like compounds
which help to regulate blood pressure ,
heart rate , blood vessel constriction ,
blood clotting and nervous system.
Sources: Ghee , Cheese , Milk products ,
Egg , Oil seeds , etc.
11. PROTEIN
Proteins are made up of Amino acids
.Proteins are very large compounds ,
which contain carbon , hydrogen ,
oxygen , nitrogen , etc. Proteins are
present in all living tissues – both in
plant and animal.
Sources: Pulses , Cerels , Pappayas ,
Beans , Nuts , Oil seeds < etc.
12. MICRONUTRIENTS
A chemical element or substance
required in trace amounts for the
normal growth and development of
living organisms. The main
micronutrients are ,
1.Vitamins
2.Minerals
13. VITAMINS
Vitamins are certain chemical
substances . Vitamins play a key role in
most chemical reactions in the body but
they do not provide energy. Vitamins
are categorized into two . They are ,
1. Water soluble – B complex and C
2. Fat soluble – A , D , E & K
14. MINERALS
Minerals provide material for the growth and
development of bones and teeth . They are
also needed for the growth of body cells ,
especially the red blood cells .The major
mineral items are ,
1. Iron
2. Iodine
3. Magnesium
4. Calcium
15. ANIMAL NUTRITION
Animal nutrition focuses on
the dietary needs of
domesticated animals ,
primarily those in agriculture
and food production.
16. PLANT NUTRITION
Plant nutrition is the study of
the chemical elements and
compounds necessary for plant
growth , plant metabolism and
their external supply.
17. MALNUTRITION
Malnutrition is a condition in which the
diet or food which does not contain
adequate amount of calories and protein
for daily work , maintenance and growth
of our body. It also refers to under
nutrition or over nutrition or imbalanced
nutrition.
