Definition of Noun
■ A noun is a word for a person, place, and thing.
■ Nouns are often used with an article (the, a, an), but not
always.
Examples:
-That man is my brother.
-The room is clean.
-That man is my brother.

Forms of Nouns
1. Concrete Nouns
■ A Concrete noun is a noun that can be identified through one of
the five senses (taste, touch, sight, hearing, or smell).
Examples:
■ Door, table, lamp, ball, star, sky
■ Water, village, river, etc.
Forms of Nouns
2. Abstract Nouns
■ An abstract noun is a noun that refers to an intangible
concept such as an emotion, a feeling, a quality, or an
idea.
■ It does not refer to a physical object. We cannot see,
touch, or detect readily through our senses.
Examples:
■ Goodness, health, freedom, honesty,
■ Friendship, simplicity, fortune, darkness,
■ Death, prosperity, struggle, truth, etc.
Kinds of Nouns
1. Proper Nouns
■ A proper noun is a noun refers to name of persons,
including animals, places, or things. Remember, ‘proper
nouns’ must be written in Capital letters.
Examples:
■ Medan, Surabaya, Boston,
■ Chandra, Bengawan Solo, Semeru, Bromo, Ciliwung, etc.
2. Common Nouns
■ A common noun is a noun that refers to things in general
or things that we often encounter in our everyday life.
Examples:
■ House, car, radio, phone,
■ Mountain, hill, lake, island, etc.
3. Collective Nouns
■ A collective noun is a noun that refers to things,
animals, or people in a collective or group.
Examples:
■ Audience, committee, fleet, cattle, people, etc.
4. Material Nouns
■ A material noun is a noun that refers to the substance
of nouns.
Examples:
■ Silver, tin, stone, sand, brass, steel, etc.
Types of Nouns
1.Countable Nouns
■ A countable noun is a noun that can be counted.
Examples:
■ One apple, two apples,Three tables, ten tables, etc.
■ For positive sentence, we can use a/an for singular noun or some for plurals.
Examples:
■ There's a man at the door.
■ I have some friends in NewYork.
■ For negative, we can use a/an for singular noun or any for plurals.
Examples:
■ I don't have a dog.
■ There aren't any seats.
■ In question, we use a/an, any or how many with
countable nouns.
Examples:
■ Is there a letter to write to?
■ Are there any chairs?
■ How many chairs are there?
2. Uncountable Nouns
■ An uncountable noun is a noun that cannot be
counted.
Examples:
■ Ink, air, water, jam, money, milk, sugar, etc.
■ In positive sentence, we use some with uncountable nouns.
Examples:
■ There's some milk in the fridge.
■ In negative sentence, we use any.
Examples:
■ There isn't any coffee.
■ In question, we use any or how much with uncountable nouns.
Examples:
■ Is there any sugar?
■ How much money do you have?

■ A singular noun is a single noun.
Examples:
■ A horse, a university, an hour, a bus, etc.
2. Plural Nouns
■ A plural noun is more than one.
Examples:
■ Driver – two drivers
■ Fish – ten fish
■ Box – five boxes
Gender of Nouns
1.Masculine Nouns
■ Masculine noun refers to male.
Examples:
■ Father, husband, uncle, bachelor, prince etc.
2. Feminine Nouns
■ A Feminine noun refers to female.
Examples:
■ Mother, wife, aunt, spinster, princess, etc.
3. Common Nouns
■ A Common noun refers to male and female nouns.
Examples:
■ Students, teacher, friend, singer, cousin, etc.
4. Neuter Nouns
■ A Neuter noun is names for inanimate things.
Examples:
■ Hill, mountain, shirt, pen, paper, train, bus, etc.
