2. THE
ORIGINS
ETHNOGRAPHY
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
The word 'ethnography' is
derived from the Greek
ἔθνος (ethnos), meaning "a
company, later a people,
nation" and -graphy,
meaning "writing".
Ethnographic studies focus
on large cultural groups of
people who interact over
time.
3. THE
ORIGINS
Beginning in the 1960s and
1970s, ethnographic
research methods began to
be widely used by
communication scholars.
As the purpose of
ethnography is to describe
and interpret the shared
and learned patterns of
values, behaviors, beliefs,
and language of a culture-
sharing group

4. WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT
?
Ethnography in simple
terms is a type of
qualitative research where
a person puts themselves
in a specific community or
organization in attempt to
learn about their cultures
from a first person point-
of-view.

5. REMEMBER
“Ethnography literally
means ‘a portrait of a
people.’ An ethnography is
a written description of a
particular culture – the
customs, beliefs, and
behavior – based on
information collected
through fieldwork.”

ETHNOMETHODOLOGY
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
Ethnomethodology is the
study of how social order is
produced in and through
processes of social
interaction
The approach was
originally developed by
Harold Garfinkel, who
attributed its origin to his
work investigating the
conduct of jury members in

11. THE
ORIGINS
ETHNOMETHODOLOGY
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
Ethno refers to a particular
socio-cultural group (for
example, a particular, local
community of surfers);
method refers to the
methods and practices this
particular group employs in
its everyday activities (for
example, related to
surfing); and ology refers to
the systematic description
of these methods and
practices.
12. THE
DIFFERENCES
Both ethnography and
ethnomethodology are terms
found in the sociological and
anthropological fields of study
and can refer to methods of
research. Ethnography a
method of research, while
ethnomethodology is a
subdivision of sociology that
focuses on the way that human
beings in different societies
construct their social orders.
