2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant
elements you need to cover in your Music Video Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and share it
with your group so you always have a copy â some sections require
you to delete the information on the slide and replace with your own
work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be
doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-
production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous
sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently
using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind
maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
5. KILLER QUEEN - QUEEN
Idea 1:
Follows around 6 people going around destroying different objects and
places.
Every object destroyed will be filmed as the only thing in shot while itâs being
broken, and the smashes will sync with the beat of the song
As the song fades towards the end, it will show all of the close-ups again,
but in reverse.
6. KILLER QUEEN - QUEEN
Idea 2:
Follows a female main character, shows her following multiple
people around
Filming makes use of POV shots to let the viewer see from the
main characters perspective and field of view to show the main
character always lurking in the background
Towards the end, itâs revealed that the woman actually killed
all the people she was following
7. KILLER QUEEN - QUEEN
Idea 3:
Single shot, wide shot, features four people all playing
instruments
Camera never pans away, never any cuts, just one shot.
Lead singer will be in the foreground, while the rest of them
would be in the background.
As the video goes on, the rest of the cast, minus the main
singer, get harder to see until theyâre incredibly blurry
The video ends with only the main singer in focus
8. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make
note of a minimum of 5 â add extra slides, screenshot the
video and in bullet point note down info in terms of camera,
editing, art design, performance, etc and how this might link to
your production
Hint!
Youâve already done this in your
case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
9. Sunflower â Post Malone
- Music video follows the two producers actually in the booth singing and
performing in front of an audience, along with behind the scenes footage from
around the studio as well.
- Entire video is in monochrome
- Transitions used are quite grainy, which matches the monochrome aesthetic of
the video
- Not much happening in the video, fans stay for the music, not so much the actual
footage
- There is actually another music video for this song, which features scenes from
the movie âSpiderman: into the spiderverseâ. That video is actually more popular
than this one. This music video has around 60 million views on YouTube, while
the other one has 1.1 billion.
10. Stressed out â Twenty one pilots
- At the beginning, the camera moves backwards as the singer travels towards it,
keeping at mostly the same distance away for the entire shot
- After this, there is a shot where the camera is on the ground, and as the singer
stands up, the camera rises with him
- There is a scene where one character speaks to another, and instead of actually
speaking and interrupting the flow of the song, they use subtitles instead
- When the main character lets his friend into his house, the camera shots used
mirror the ones used before, when the friend let the main character into his house,
creating a sense of consistency.
11. Alone - Marshmello
- The video is filmed in slow motion â Movements and actions are slowed down to
give them more impact
- The actions speed up when the main character is enjoying themselves, the fast
paced movements mirroring his energetic mood
- When people start the hear the main characterâs music, they begin to like him and
try to act like him.
- It mirrors scenes where he was alone, but this time he has people around him and
treating him nicely
12. Dark horse â Katy Perry
- A lot of warm colours are used for the backgrounds, while cold colours are more
prominent in the foreground.
- Every colour used is incredibly vibrant and eye-catching
- Special effects are used quite a lot in the video, it keeps the viewers attention
hooked
- The main singer is shown to change costumes quite a lot in the video, she never
sticks to one look
- There are around 4 scenes playing at once, and the video keeps jumping between
them using direct cuts
13. High hopes â Panic! At The Disco
- The opening shot is of the top of a building, reflecting the name of the video.
- The main character is almost always in the middle of the shot. Attention is always
drawn to him
- The shots of tall buildings is repeated to make the main character appear small in
comparison
- People treat him poorly while heâs on the ground, but are amazed and cheer when
heâs at the top. Symbolism for social status.
- Character walks up a building. Advanced editing used.
- Different camera shots showing different angles of him on the building
14. Ed Sheeran â Shape of you
- Lots of dynamic shots and dynamic lighting used
- Quite cinematic
- Had a clear narrative (less so towards the end)
- Colour scheme is quite grey and dull, with hints of colder colours
- There is a scene where a character is doing pushups. Every time they go down, the
camera transitions to a different shot, and when the camera cuts back to them,
they're coming up again
15. POTENTIAL SONGS
Cabinet man â Lemon Demon
Paisley park â Prince
Killer queen â Queen
Sunflower â Post Malone
Silence - Marshmello
17. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN
TO USE
- Linear narrative
- Costume that fits the setting and genre
- Dynamic shots
- Actions on the beat
- Symbolism
- Mirror angles and shots from earlier scenes with subtle differences
- Visual filter to make it look more aesthetically pleasing
- Multiple actors, but only one main character
-
18.
19. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Silence - Marshmello One or two main
characters
Story easy to follow
and understand
(linear narrative)
Visuals corresponding to
the lyrics
Visuals also match the
genre
Quite an energetic song,
meaning camerawork will
have to be varied and
interesting to match
Varied yet relevant
locations
Use of many different
camera angles and
techniques
Lots of locations that the
audience can relate to
(e.g. parks, fields)
creating a sense of
familiarity and relatability
Story must have a sense
of realism, to fit with the
song.
Fewer characters
means more time to
understand the main
cast
20. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas:
1.Opportunity to direct people in specific ways
2.Opportunity to plan out the shots beforehand
3.Opportunity to have a say in costume choice
4.Opportunity to try new equipment
5.Opportunity to have creative liberty over the general idea
21. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
1. filming outside is restrictive due to the weather
2. filming in crowded areas is restrictive due to the pandemic
3. equipment is restrictive as I donât have funds to purchase high-end
equipment
4. recording time is restrictive due to actors and my own schedule
5. shots at night are restrictive as I canât be out late into the night
23. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
Meaning & content: the song is about
Duration: 3 minutes 20 seconds
Style: Electronic
Pace: Upbeat
24. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions,
etc]
-Make the video correlate directly with the lyrics, having two
actors and portraying them in some form of relationship
-
26. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your music
video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to
investigate standard costings for such a production and apply
these to your planned production considering which equipment
you would need and resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
27. PRODUCTION OUTLINE
Music video for âSilenceâ that features a linear narrative and
one or two characters.
The music track is quite upbeat yet the lyrics hold a deeper
meaning, and tell a story about a boy and a girlâs relationship.
The mood is pretty joyful, despite the lyrics.
I need some form of camera (phone or otherwise) and an
editing software, along with a costume for my actor and
permission to record in the locations i plan to.
28. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost,
weather? How will you manage this?
- Park and ride. Limitations: Weather
- Home. Limitations: availability. Risks: disruption from family
- The lake. Limitations: weather. Risks: unwanted people in the
shot
-
29. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from
college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is
available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
-A camera, any kind. Phone camera would work
-Editing software (e,g premiere pro, sony vegas)
-USB stick to store files on
30. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities
Video will be edited at home on my PC
31. PERSONNEL
CREW: Editor, would help with cutting to the beat.
Photographer, would help with cinematography. Artist, would
help storyboard
CAST: Male actor, lives close-by, no transport cost. Female
actor, lives about an hour away, would have to pay for the
train.
34. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined
process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
35. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
36. Intertextuality -
Marshmello collaborated with Epic games, the creators of fortnite,
in early 2019 to create an in-game event where players could
interact with marshmello and listen to some of his music. in the
music video, i could somehow reference this in the footage
The movie Joker was released on August 28th 2019, and was the
6th highest grossing film that year, became very popular
globally, so the target audience should easily be able to pick up
the reference
ROUGH PLAN
37. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel
using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to
make
38. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse,
chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each
section
You can use this as the master template for your production,
then add more shots to each section when you develop your
full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song,
then add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what
happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to
break up the process.
39. Verse 1:
Yeah, I'd rather be a lover than a fighter (fighter)
'Cause all my life, I've been fighting
Never felt a feeling of comfort, oh
And all this time, I've been hiding
And I never had someone to call my own, oh nah
I'm so used to sharing
Love only left me alone
But I'm at one with the silence
Video starts with Main character in a group of people, all visibly happy except the main
character. as the song fades in, the Main character begins walking away. Once the lyrics
begin, it cuts to a shot of the Main character sitting alone on a bench. ânever felt a feeling
of comfortâ cues the transitions between multiple shots, all with the same camera angle
and the Main character in centre shot. it then cuts to a shot indoors of the main character
alone on his bed, with headphones on.
40. Chorus:
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been quiet for too long
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been silent for too long
As the soft buildup begins, there is a rising shot of the main character, starting from his
shoes slowly panning upwards towards his face. The main character is shown to be
more confident through body language. As the buildup continues, the shots used
become faster and more active, with the main character moving a lot more.
41. Chorus (cont.):
I've been quiet for too long
I've been quiet for too long
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been quiet for too long
When the beat drops, the shot switches to an indoor space, with multi-coloured
lights flashing. The main character is bobbing his head up and down as he moves
around buttons and discs on the DJ board, using energetic body language. at
around the 1 minute 30 seconds mark, the camera returns to the shot of him in his
bedroom, but instead of lying down, he is sat up. the lighting used will also be a lot
warmer than the previous shot. Return to the standing shot from earlier, camera is
moving away from the character now, mixed with use of slow motion movements.
42. Verse 2:
I'm in need of a savior (savior), but I'm not asking for favors
My whole life, I've felt like a burden
I think too much, and I hate it
I'm so used to being in the wrong, I'm tired of caring
Loving never gave me a home, so I'll sit here in the silence
Shot returns to his bedroom, this time MC is playing a video game. include
intertextuality of some sort here. MC then stands up and slowly walks away from his
TV. once he exits the room and closes the door, theres a quick shot of the empty
room, before cutting to the next shot.
43. Chorus 2:
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been quiet for too long
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been silent for too long
Soft buildup begins again. shot of MC standing in front of a mirror without his
mask on. Looks behind, camera focuses on mask sitting in background. pans
up from the bottom slowly as MC puts the mask on.
44. Chorus 2 (cont.):
I've been quiet for too long
I've been quiet for too long
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been quiet for too long
Mix shots from every location featured in the video. different shots of MC from
different angles, locations, having him do different things in shot. all of this until
near the very end of the song, MC takes his mask off one more time and rolls it
behind him towards the camera. as it stops rolling, the video finishes.
45. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
46.
47.
48. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what
you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the scene and
other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
50. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference
stages of production, using a table is suggested
Danny Western - 07368 641008 - Main actor
51. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions for
filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera,
equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
53. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the table in
the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a start,
then you can add specialist/site specific risks as you progress
your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document, you
should evaluate if anything changes in production and when
you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each location
54. RISK ASSESSMENT
Aldi car park - watch out for cars
Park and ride - donât fall off of tall structures
Bedroom - dont trip over wires
The rec - be mindful of other people
Garage - be careful of tools lying around
Dining room - beware of knives
55. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location,
Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
56. CONTINGENCY PLAN
if we are unable to mix households, danny will film the shots
that are inside himself.
57. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your project.
You should plan when youâre filming and how you intend to
use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
59. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your
video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and insert
here
