3. What is Dam?
Dams are massive barriers built across
rivers and streams to confine and utilize
the flow of water for human purposes
such as irrigation and generation of
hydroelectricity.
6. Introduction
Kurram Garhi Hydropower Plant (KGHPP) is a
small, low-head, run of the river
hydroelectric power generation station of 4.0
megawatt generation capacity (four units of 1.0
MW each), located at Kurram Garhi, a small town
in Bannu KPK province of Pakistan on the flows of
Kuchkot Canal from Kurram River.
7. CONTI:
It is a small hydel power generating plant
constructed and put in commercial operation on
February 1958 with the Average Annual generating
capacity of 17 million units (GWh) of least
expensive electricity.
Kurram Garhi Power House is situated in North-
West of Bannu district of Khyber Pukhtun-khwa at
a distance of about 09 km from Bannu City.
It has Four (04) Horizontal Axis Francis Turbine.
9. Filtration plant
A big water treatment plant purifies canal water
called kurram. The water is purified for the whole
city. The pure water then flows from Kurram
Garhi to Bannu city approximately 25 km. The
pure water is stored in a huge tank located in
Tanchi Bazar.
10. Up Gradation
Prime Minister of Pakistan, during a public meeting at Bannu
on 3rd May, 2016 announced up-gradation of Kurram Garhi
Hydel Power Station.
Rehabilitation and up-gradation of Kurram Garhi Hydel
Power Station will enhance the capacity from 3.5 MW to 5
MW and provide more reliable & consistent power to the
National Grid for another 30~40 years. Moreover, the
project will also boost the voltage profile of the local region
and help in eradicating energy shortage problems in the
area. The estimated cost of the Project is PKR 1180.851 M
and completion time is 3 years.
