Abstract
Indira Sagar Power Station is situated at 10 Km from the village Punasa in Khandwa District
of Madhya Pradesh. The foundation stone of this project was laid by the then Hon’ble Prime
Minister of India Late Smt. Indira Gandhi on 23.10.1984. It is a multipurpose project on the river
Narmada with installed capacity of 1000 Megawatt (8X125). It will generate 2698 MUs energy,
annually. The project will irrigate 2.70 lakh ha land annually. As per CCEA sanction the project
cost is Rs. 4355.57 Crores (Sept. 2000 Price Level). Due to early commissioning of units,
substantial amount of savings has been made in the actual completion cost. The project consists of
Concrete gravity dam of length 653 meter at top with maximum height (above deepest foundation
level) of 92 meter. The dam involved pouring of 14.00 lacs cubic meter concrete. It consists of 12
main spillway blocks with effective width of 20 m each. 20 no. radial gates of size 20 m X 17 m
have been erected for regulation of flood water. The surface Power House is situated on the right
bank of the river, with Machine hall (202 meter long, 23 meter wide, 53 meter high), service bay
(42 meter long, 23 meter wide, 24 meter high) and transformer yard (202 meter long, 20 meter
wide) to house 8 Nos. Francis type turbines of 125 MW each. The water conductor system consists
of one Head Race Channel of length 530 meter, width 75 meter and depth 50 meter with water
carrying capacity of 2200 cumecs. Water enter into turbine fron intake structure by 8 Nos. Penstock
of 8 meter diameter and 157 meter length each. Water flow capacity of each Penstock is 275
cumecs. After power generation water is discharged back into river Narmada through 850 m long
Tail Race Channel.

Introduction:-
The Punasa Lift Irrigation Scheme is located near village Chandel in Khandwa
(East Nimar) district, proposed for development of irrigation facilities in East Nimar district of
M.P. This area has been declared as a drought prone area The Project is proposed as an extension
of command from on-going Indira Sagar Project (ISP). The scheme is proposed in lieu of Chhota
Tawa Project which was earlier proposed across Chhota Tawa river, a tributary of river Narmada.
The PLIS is proposed to lift water directly from the ISP reservoir and irrigate CCA of 35008 ha at
105% intensity of irrigation, thus proposing annual irrigation to an area of 36758 ha. The project
shall provide drinking water and irrigation facilities to 110 villages including 25 affected villages
of ISP and resettled population of ISP oustees and habilitation sites.
Composite Control Structure Cum Canal Head Power House
PLIS is proposed and linked up with the composite control structure
at R.D.3045 M. of Punasa Facilities. This work comprises of head regulator and a
Canal Head Power House with 3 units of 5 MW each.

Salient Features:-
A provision to irrigate about 35008 hact.of land by lift is alrady considered in the design of Intake
component of Indira Sagar Project canal. It will serve the areas around Punasa and Mundi village
in command of the earlier proposed Chhota Tawa Project. The Administrative Approval has been
accorded to the scheme by the Govt. of M.P. N.V.D.D. vide No. F-2/28/27/2/2005/2817 dated
19.9.2005 for an estimated cost of Rs. 185.04 crores.

The Indirasagar Dam is a multipurpose project of Madhya Pradesh on the Narmada River at
Narmadanagar in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh in India. The foundation stone of the
project was laid by late Smt Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India on 23 October 1984.
The construction of main dam started in 1992. The downstream projects of ISP are Omkareshwar,
Maheshwar, and Sardar Sarovar Project.
The Project envisages construction of a 92 meters high and 653 meters long concrete gravity dam.
It provides Irrigation in 1,230 square kilometres of land with annual production of 2.7 billion units
in the districts of Khandwa and Khargone in Madhya Pradesh and power generation of 1,000 MW
installed capacity (8x125). The reservoir of 12,200,000,000 m3
(9,890,701 acre·ft) was created. In
terms of storage of water, it withholds the largest reservoir in India, with capacity of 12.22 billion
cu m, followed by Bharkra Nangal in Himachal Pradesh. The dam, built as a joint venture between
Madhya Pradesh irrigation and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation is the source of the
Indira Gandhi Canal. It was commissioned on May 2005.

Indira Sagar Project
Introduction
River Narmada, fifth largest river in India, with a river flow length of 1,312 km originates from
Amarkantak in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. Narmada flows westward and after passing
through Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, it drains into Arabian Sea near Gulf of
Combay. Indira Sagar Project (ISP) situated on River Narmada, 10 km from village Punasa in
Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh is commissioned on 31 March 2005.
Indira Sagar Project is a multipurpose Project with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW, with annual
energy generation of 2,698 million units in Stage I, 1,850 million units in Stage II, and
1,515 million units in Stage III, and annual irrigation of 2.65 Lac. Ha on a Culturable Command
Area (CCA) of 1.23 Lac. Ha. Total catchment area at the dam site is 61,642 km2
. Indira Sagar
Project is the mother project for the downstream projects on Narmada Basin with largest reservoir
in India, having 12.22 Bm3 storage capacity. All the eight units commissioned by March 2005
ahead of schedule while generation from first unit was started from January 2004. The powerhouse
is the second-largest surface powerhouse in India. Indian National Human Rights commission

Indira Sagar Project is a Multipurpose project will have the largest storage capacity in the country.
It will have an installed capacity of 1000 MW and annual irrigation of 2.65 Lakh Ha. on a CCA of
1.23 Lakh Ha. The project provides regulated releases of 8.12 MAF to Gujrat ex-Maheshwar project
after power generation at down stream projects viz., Omkareshwar and Maheshwar project in Madhya
Pradesh.
Indira Sagar Project is the key project on Narmada river providing excellent storage site. The Dam
is proposed on the main river near village Narmadanagar of Punasa Block in the District.
Omkareshwar and Maheshwar projects are proposed in the downstream to utilize the regulated
releases of Indira Sagar project of irrigation and power generation. Hence, the cascade of Indira Sagar,
Omkareshwar and Maheshwar projects, together,are known as"Narmada Sagar Complex".The total
drainage area at the proposed dam site of Indira Sagar Project is 61642 Sq. Kms. The main dam is
located on quartzite's of reddish colour and with small interbedding of silt stone of purple colour
belonging to Vindhyans (Super Group). The power house is located on the stable right bank in deep
pit which is geologically less disturbed. The project command area encompasses the Narmada Sone
lineament. The command area is mostly composed of basaltic lava flows. These flows are designated
as deccan traps. The thickness of lava flows ranges from 6.5 m to 30 m with presence of vesicular
and amydaloidal in basaltic flow with appreciable weathering on top. Detailed seismological studies
have been got done and based on the recommendation of the Dam Review Panel, detailed designs for
the dam have been prepared by the Central Water Commission. A network for ten seismological
stations is proposed to be established through Indian Meteorological Department covering the area of
the project of Narmada Sagar Complex.The dam is proposed to be 92 m (302 Ft.) high and 653 m
(2142 ft.) in length with a slightly curved alignment of 880 m radius across river Narmada near village

and a live storage of 9.75 Bm3
A sub surface powerhouse on the
right bank is proposed to house 8 units of 125 MW each with conventional Francis Turbines.

A lined gravity canal takes off from the reservoir
with FSL of 239.15 m through a 3.67 Kms long tunnel
named Punasa tunnel. The total length of the left bank
main canal is 24s8.65 Kms. It is proposed to irrigate
about 98475 Ha. of land in the District and West Nimar
District of Madhya Pradesh State. The distribution
system is proposed to be lined. The left canal is
proposed to takeoff from 92.10 Km of the main flow
canal. It is 83 Kms. long and involves 38m lift. It is
proposed to irrigate about 24282 Ha. of land in higher
elevated areas of West Nimar District in Bhikangaon
and Kasarawad Tehsils.A provision for further
expansion to irrigate about 26000 Ha. of land by lift is
also considered in the basin of intake components of
Indira Sagar Project Canal.The submergence of Indira
Sagar Project is 91348 Ha. including forest and revenue
land extending to 249 villages of East Nimar,
Hoshangabad and Dewas Districts. Out of 249 villages
going under submergence, 12 are forest villages and the
remaining 237 are revenue villages. The submergence
area is consisting of forest area of 41420 ha. , cultivated
area of 44363 Ha. and 5565 ha. of other area.

  • 2. 2 Abstract Indira Sagar Power Station is situated at 10 Km from the village Punasa in Khandwa District of Madhya Pradesh. The foundation stone of this project was laid by the then Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Late Smt. Indira Gandhi on 23.10.1984. It is a multipurpose project on the river Narmada with installed capacity of 1000 Megawatt (8X125). It will generate 2698 MUs energy, annually. The project will irrigate 2.70 lakh ha land annually. As per CCEA sanction the project cost is Rs. 4355.57 Crores (Sept. 2000 Price Level). Due to early commissioning of units, substantial amount of savings has been made in the actual completion cost. The project consists of Concrete gravity dam of length 653 meter at top with maximum height (above deepest foundation level) of 92 meter. The dam involved pouring of 14.00 lacs cubic meter concrete. It consists of 12 main spillway blocks with effective width of 20 m each. 20 no. radial gates of size 20 m X 17 m have been erected for regulation of flood water. The surface Power House is situated on the right bank of the river, with Machine hall (202 meter long, 23 meter wide, 53 meter high), service bay (42 meter long, 23 meter wide, 24 meter high) and transformer yard (202 meter long, 20 meter wide) to house 8 Nos. Francis type turbines of 125 MW each. The water conductor system consists of one Head Race Channel of length 530 meter, width 75 meter and depth 50 meter with water carrying capacity of 2200 cumecs. Water enter into turbine fron intake structure by 8 Nos. Penstock of 8 meter diameter and 157 meter length each. Water flow capacity of each Penstock is 275 cumecs. After power generation water is discharged back into river Narmada through 850 m long Tail Race Channel.

  • 6. 6 Introduction:- The Punasa Lift Irrigation Scheme is located near village Chandel in Khandwa (East Nimar) district, proposed for development of irrigation facilities in East Nimar district of M.P. This area has been declared as a drought prone area The Project is proposed as an extension of command from on-going Indira Sagar Project (ISP). The scheme is proposed in lieu of Chhota Tawa Project which was earlier proposed across Chhota Tawa river, a tributary of river Narmada. The PLIS is proposed to lift water directly from the ISP reservoir and irrigate CCA of 35008 ha at 105% intensity of irrigation, thus proposing annual irrigation to an area of 36758 ha. The project shall provide drinking water and irrigation facilities to 110 villages including 25 affected villages of ISP and resettled population of ISP oustees and habilitation sites. Composite Control Structure Cum Canal Head Power House PLIS is proposed and linked up with the composite control structure at R.D.3045 M. of Punasa Facilities. This work comprises of head regulator and a Canal Head Power House with 3 units of 5 MW each.
  • 7. 7 Salient Features:- A provision to irrigate about 35008 hact.of land by lift is alrady considered in the design of Intake component of Indira Sagar Project canal. It will serve the areas around Punasa and Mundi village in command of the earlier proposed Chhota Tawa Project. The Administrative Approval has been accorded to the scheme by the Govt. of M.P. The foundation stone of the project was laid by late Smt Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India on 23 October 1984. The construction of main dam started in 1992. The downstream projects of ISP are Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, and Sardar Sarovar Project. The Project envisages construction of a 92 meters high and 653 meters long concrete gravity dam. It provides Irrigation in 1,230 square kilometres of land with annual production of 2.7 billion units in the districts of Khandwa and Khargone in Madhya Pradesh and power generation of 1,000 MW installed capacity (8x125). The reservoir of 12,200,000,000 m3 (9,890,701 acre·ft) was created. In terms of storage of water, it withholds the largest reservoir in India, with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m, followed by Bharkra Nangal in Himachal Pradesh. The dam, built as a joint venture between Madhya Pradesh irrigation and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation is the source of the Indira Gandhi Canal. It was commissioned on May 2005.
  • 10. 10 Indira Sagar Project Introduction River Narmada, fifth largest river in India, with a river flow length of 1,312 km originates from Amarkantak in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. Narmada flows westward and after passing through Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, it drains into Arabian Sea near Gulf of Combay. Indira Sagar Project (ISP) situated on River Narmada, 10 km from village Punasa in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh is commissioned on 31 March 2005. Indira Sagar Project is a multipurpose Project with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW, with annual energy generation of 2,698 million units in Stage I, 1,850 million units in Stage II, and 1,515 million units in Stage III, and annual irrigation of 2.65 Lac. Ha on a Culturable Command Area (CCA) of 1.23 Lac. Ha. Total catchment area at the dam site is 61,642 km2 . Indira Sagar Project is the mother project for the downstream projects on Narmada Basin with largest reservoir in India, having 12.22 Bm3 storage capacity. All the eight units commissioned by March 2005 ahead of schedule while generation from first unit was started from January 2004. The powerhouse is the second-largest surface powerhouse in India. It will have an installed capacity of 1000 MW and annual irrigation of 2.65 Lakh Ha. on a CCA of 1.23 Lakh Ha. The project provides regulated releases of 8.12 MAF to Gujrat ex-Maheshwar project after power generation at down stream projects viz., Omkareshwar and Maheshwar project in Madhya Pradesh. Indira Sagar Project is the key project on Narmada river providing excellent storage site. The Dam is proposed on the main river near village Narmadanagar of Punasa Block in the District. Omkareshwar and Maheshwar projects are proposed in the downstream to utilize the regulated releases of Indira Sagar project of irrigation and power generation. Hence, the cascade of Indira Sagar, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar projects, together,are known as"Narmada Sagar Complex".The total drainage area at the proposed dam site of Indira Sagar Project is 61642 Sq. Kms. The main dam is located on quartzite's of reddish colour and with small interbedding of silt stone of purple colour belonging to Vindhyans (Super Group). The power house is located on the stable right bank in deep pit which is geologically less disturbed. The project command area encompasses the Narmada Sone lineament. The command area is mostly composed of basaltic lava flows. These flows are designated as deccan traps. The thickness of lava flows ranges from 6.5 m to 30 m with presence of vesicular and amydaloidal in basaltic flow with appreciable weathering on top. Detailed seismological studies have been got done and based on the recommendation of the Dam Review Panel, detailed designs for the dam have been prepared by the Central Water Commission. A network for ten seismological stations is proposed to be established through Indian Meteorological Department covering the area of the project of Narmada Sagar Complex.The dam is proposed to be 92 m (302 Ft.) high and 653 m (2142 ft.) in length with a slightly curved alignment of 880 m radius across river Narmada near village

(Construction Site-View- 1) A lined gravity canal takes off from the reservoir with FSL of 239.15 m through a 3.67 Kms long tunnel named Punasa tunnel. The total length of the left bank main canal is 24s8.65 Kms. It is proposed to irrigate about 98475 Ha. of land in the District and West Nimar District of Madhya Pradesh State. The distribution system is proposed to be lined. The left canal is proposed to takeoff from 92.10 Km of the main flow canal. It is 83 Kms. long and involves 38m lift. It is proposed to irrigate about 24282 Ha. of land in higher elevated areas of West Nimar District in Bhikangaon and Kasarawad Tehsils.A provision for further expansion to irrigate about 26000 Ha. of land by lift is also considered in the basin of intake components of Indira Sagar Project Canal.The submergence of Indira Sagar Project is 91348 Ha. including forest and revenue land extending to 249 villages of East Nimar, Hoshangabad and Dewas Districts. Out of 249 villages going under submergence, 12 are forest villages and the remaining 237 are revenue villages. The submergence area is consisting of forest area of 41420 ha. , cultivated area of 44363 Ha. and 5565 ha. of other area.
