1. Introduction
1.1. Background:
Nepal being water rich country has huge potentiality to hydropower energy production
Since 1911AD, 500 kW power generation at Pharping(chandra jyoti)
Dr. Hari Man Shrestha
The theoretical hydropower potential of Nepal is 83,000 MW
Economically=42,000 mw
Technically =43000mw
According to NEA 2018/19 annual report
Nepal has developed only around 1,182.215MW
Economical
Sapta koshi =10860 mw
Sapta Gandaki =5270 mw
Karnali and mahakali =25125 mw
Southern rivers = 878 mw
Total generated capacity of small HPP=563394KW
Isolated capacity=4536

1.2. Introduction
Small Hydropower plant: Although definitions vary, DOE defines small hydropower as projects that
generate 10 MW or less of power.
Types of hydropower project
Storage HPP
Diversion HPP
Run of River (RoR) HPP
Peak Run of River (PRoR) HPP
Pumped Storage HPP
Classification of hydropower according to generation capacity
Pico <5kw
Micro 5-10 kw
Mini 100kw-1000kw(1mw)
Small 1mw-10mw
Medium 10mw-100mw
Larger above 100mw

1. Introduction
Why small hydropower plant?
Easy to find developer due to its low initial cost
Involves less social, economical, political, and technical issues
Easily available project
Less man power and technology required
Less chances of failure and hazard risk
Low construction time
More effective in operation and maintenance
Useful in isolated areas
