2. • I have followed the convention of using Buzz Words on the cover because it
instantly grabs the attention of the readers. This convention clearly works at
attracting audience because the words are a bigger font and different colour so
it over emphasises and makes the audience believe they are getting something
exclusive they cant get with any other magazine.
• The convention of a top strip I have used on the cover to give further
information of the magazine so the audience can clearly see what the magazine
has to offer. I have used this convention so the target audience can easily find
out what they are getting.
• My front cover displays one model on my main image. I have followed the
convention of having the main image of a model because then the audience can
see who the magazine is directly aimed at (students). You can clearly see that
the genre is college and studying so the target audience will be students at
college.
• My media product uses the convention of anchorage so text refers to the image
so that the whole cover links together and looks put together and thoughtful. I
didn’t want to challenge this convention because then the magazine wouldn’t
be effective at all. For a successful magazine, the text needs to refer to images.
My image is of a student working with coverlines about revision, student life
and careers.
4. • One of the differences include the direct address of the model on my cover. This
challenges the convention of this media product because the model doesn’t look like she
is posing and is in a relaxed, non-staged pose. I have done this to create a more student
vibe because students aren’t models and therefore shouldn’t portray a perfect stance. My
model is doing work and is looking down which resembles student life better and
therefore the genre of my magazine.
• I have challenged the convention of the masthead placing for my magazine as my
masthead is on the right hand side, compared to the fashion magazine which masthead
covers the top from left to right. I have challenged this because my main image needed
room at the top for the models head. I didn’t want to cover the model that much because
it gives off the studying vibe the whole magazine is about. I wanted the audience to see
the change of direct address of my model and this wouldn’t be effective if the masthead
was covering it. Because my masthead challenges the convention, I feel like it gives my
magazine more of a trademark because it will be unique and stick in the audiences mind.
• The main coverline placing on my front cover challenges the convention because it is slap
bang in the middle of the page over the main image. This placing challenges the fashion
magazine which main coverline is on the left hand side under the masthead. I wanted to
challenge this convention because I feel like having the main coverline right in the middle
immediately grabs the attention of the target audience as you can’t miss it. The bright
colour of yellow is also used to direct the target audience right at the centre of the
magazine. The main coverline is probably the first thing that pops out on the magazine
and I wanted to do this because ‘your personal guide’ sums up the magazine.
6. • I have followed the convention of using titles to divide the magazine into subject
sections because it organises the magazine well, and so making the magazine
overall look professional and well organised. This gives a guide for the target
audience to use to get to the specific part of the magazine which interests them
the most and therefore I followed this convention because it’s very audience
friendly.
• Like the Beyoncé contents, I have chosen to use a white background because it
clears the page and doesn’t overcrowd to what's important; the page references. I
followed the convention of having a very basic plain contents page because it is all
about the page references and what's actually inside and so I didn’t want to
distract the audience with other things, like the Beyoncé and many other contents
pages do too.
• The convention of including page references is another convention I have followed
by using numbers by the side of the page titles. I feel like every magazine should
have this otherwise it cant be a successful magazine as every single magazine
includes this feature.
• Another convention I have followed is using a clear colour scheme throughout. This
is an important convention that I decided to follow because it forms the branding
of the magazine. The colours a magazine uses soon becomes what the audience
will familiarise with your magazine. Therefore I used the colours of blue yellow and
orange on the contents and no other colour because the magazine and contents
8. • A way I have challenged the conventions of a contents page is the amount of
images. The Beyoncé contents only has one image and covers a lot of the page,
however my contents consists of 3 smaller images. I have done this so the
audience gets to see more of the college and what there is to offer, which will only
interest them even more. My masthead is called “Everything college”, so only
having one image wouldn’t represent everything about college and so breaking
the convention worked in my favour because it follows what my magazine is all
about.
• Another convention I have challenged is including a bottom strip on my contents
page. I have decided to do this because it links with my front cover (which has the
same bottom strip) and additionally reminding the target audience of information.
I wanted to break this convention so my magazine gives information to the
audience everywhere and not just the front cover.
• Instead of using the masthead again on the contents page like the Beyoncé
content page does, I broke the convention and placed the symbol of the magazine
instead. I did this because I wanted the contents page to be clear and not
cluttered and because my masthead ‘Everything College’ is quite long, it would
have been a struggle to put all of it on my contents page. The symbol breaks the
convention but it still stands for my masthead and therefore I think works well.
