2. So I researched this genre of music publication
and studied:
• Model 1 Model 2 • Model 3 Model 4
3. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
• My media product uses a typical lay out having my mast head top left hand corner which I
feel allows my magazine cover to look organised and similar to a real media product for
example “Spin”. Secondly unlike “NME” magazine all my cover lines are aligned to the left
however I also have my Main cover line on the left third where as “NME” had their main
cover line on the right had side I have challenged this because I feel its gives space for my
image without lots of text covering it. Dissimilarly I have used a images in natural light where
as all 4 model indie magazines have perhaps used the magnetic laso tool in Photoshop to
crop out the background or on a Chroma Key backdrop. I have done this because I want my
audience to fully engage with my magazine and for its to have sense of realism. With my
contents page I have used a even mixture of text and images un like the contents pages I have
researched which have just one main image. By challenging this convention I feel I will
engage my audience more while highlighting the main stories. Many of the contents pages I
research with indie music as their genre have simple colour scheme and neutral colour
images I however my contents page is very colourful and bright while still delivering a Indie
music style. As for my Double page spread I feel I followed and used a lot of conventions from
the text and main image being on separate pages and the title being at the top of the page
and having a centred pull quote the reason I followed these conventions was because my
aim was for my double page to be mainly about the text an so much about the image and
other effects.
4. How does your media product represent particular social group?
• The models I used where of the same age of the audience I was trying to reach I feel this will
identifiable with the reader making sure they can see the magazine is catering for their music
desires. As well as this I have taken a modern approach to my 3 components the main reason
was because this represents my target audience. The music genre I chose also is very popular
with my target audience the images I used I feel this is a visual representation of indie
culture. For my front page I have represented my audience my by including cover stories they
would find interesting as well as this my front cover represents my target audience as it
offers and insight to the thing they enjoy such as indie music. My contents page represent my
target audience through the images mainly this is because the images I have used are all of
15-20 year olds who are part of the indie music culture.
5. Who would be the audience for your media product?
• Alterative/Indie music loving 15 – 20 years olds are my target audience the reason I choose
this age as my target audience was because I feel they are age group which main listen to
Indie music as well as there not being a magazine which caters for this age group in this genre
of music.
6. How did you attract/address your audience?
• I attracted my audience by using modern and urban themes these were conveyed through
items such as text fonts, images and the type of language I used. The language I used I feel
was important when addressing my target audience I ensured its was not to formal however I
did not dumb down the information and simplify my product. The images I chose I tried to
ensure they would attract my audience by being original bright and colourful by doing this I
aimed for my audience to be able to able to identify with the content of my magazine.
My bold mast head I hope will attract My contents page aims to address My main image on my double page I hope will attract
my target audience because of my audience with short and simple my audience as it the model is a natural environment
originality and uniqueness. I secondly words which will attract them such a relaxing which my target audience do. My large tile
would like to attract my audience “FREE” and “ECLUSICE”. Secondly I which is an extract frim my Q&A I hope will attract my
with mu cover lines as I feel they hope to attract my audience with audience as I hope they would want to find out the
would be interested in the stories my images which represent them and indie artist who used to be a “Typical Geek”
magazines covers. they can relate to them.
7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
• I learnt from using Photoshop and InDesign as well as camera work when taking my photos. With
Photoshop the main things I leant was how to adjust the appearance of my photos, for example I
learnt how to flip and rotate photos so they work with the lay out of your media product. I uses this
tool when working on my front cover image. Secondly I learnt how adjust the size of a photo
proportionally the reason this was important was so the image was o distorted and looked
consistent. I used this technique through out my front cover, contest page and double page
spread. With InDesign I learnt about the general construction of my 3 pages. And important thing I
learnt was the use of layers which I used throughout all my 3 pages this was an important to learnt
because it allowed me to maximize a small area which I had to fill with images as well as text. A
second tool which I feel was important to lean to constructing my magazine successfully was the
use of grids, margins and guides . By incorporating these into my construction it allowed my text to
be equally aligned spaced and located this helped my magazine look like a real media product as
well as help me develop a clear layout. A third important skill I learnt was the grouping tool. I feel
this was important In the construction because it allowed me to group separate elements such as
shapes and text which had be layered to create one item by grouping the it allowed me organise my
layout and it enabled me to the edit the scale ad size and location of items with out interrupting the
whole item . I also learnt that both Photoshop and InDesign together to produce a successful media
product as well as individually to alter 1 item. I learnt about WeVideo a video creating programme
which helps you create a video to upload on to YouTube. I planned to recode a voice over and put
together a slide of the different elements of the media products I was researching. I leant how to
make a voice recoding and edit it by cropping the recoding and how to layer this with moving
images. I also learnt how to use slide share a programme used to upload power points on to the
technologies such as Blogger. I had to convert power points in to pdf file and then embed them in
new Blogger post.
8. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression form it to the full product?
• Looking back on my preliminary task and my other attempts to making a media product I feel
I have understood and the programmes I was using the more I used them. I feel it was
important to play around with the programmes so I could learn more techniques and skills .
The use of plans and drafts I feel was important because it enable me to maximise my time
and spend time and spend time on bettering my media product. Another thing I learnt was
the ways in which camera work such as angles, costume, colour scheme all convey a
representation of a social group the more successfully you do this the easier it is for reader
and audience to understand the themes and depictions your magazine is expressing about a
genre of music. I also learnt about the work that goes in to constructing a media product like
a magazine and the research that is essential to creating a successful product, I have learnt to
be more analytical when looking at a media product in comparison to the research I did for
my preliminary task. By doing this it made the decisions and choices I made for my own
media product easier.
