2. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF
MAGAZINE LISTING PAGES
• The masthead of the magazine is clearly visible and it brands the product. There is normally a consistent colour to the
masthead which sets the tone for the colour scheme throughout the whole double page spread
• There is a main heading which normally says which either poses a question for the director/directors goes/go on to answer
in the article. On the other hand, it could be an important word or sentence used in the article, which intrigues the audience
more so they would have an interest in reading it more compared to a question.
• There is always a main image which is the big focus on the page for the audience. It is related to the theme and can be
screenshot of an image from the documentary; there are two types of styles one can use when including their main image,
either one has an enlarged image covering the whole background which is overlapped by all parts of the writing and
possibly other images. The other style is where the image is still the biggest image on the page but it is placed in a border
and can be positioned around the page and does not cover the whole background which would potentially be filled with a
solid colour
• A grab quote is a typical convention of a double page spread as it is a one way of attracting your audience. This would
include a quote from the documentary which relates to the certain topic you are talking about within the article. It’s almost
like the article is communicating with you through the grab quote
• The drop cap in an article shows the start of the article
• Sub heading
• A series of smaller images
3. MAGAZINE OPTIONS FOR WHO COULD
REPRESENT OUR DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• TV Times
• What’s on TV
• TV Quick
• TV Guide
• TV and Satellite
• TV Choice
• Radio Times
4. RADIO TIMES DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
ANALYSIS
We have made a joint decision to choose Radio Times as our magazine to hold our
double page spread because of the certain way they present their content and they
would be the best fit to show our serious topic; the magazine is sophisticated and this
is suited to our theme and we want to be represented seriously and professionally so
our product has a very mature audience. The reasons why we did not choose the
other magazines were because we thought the bright colours and in your face style
marketing was very superficial, childish and not mature in relation to the theme of our
documentary.
