2. Costume
The protagonist is portrayed to be a young girl who feels as
though she is an ‘outsider’ and doesn’t fit in with other
people her age which causes her to feel a lot of pressure to
change herself to reach a standard which pleases everyone
else. Her outfits are clothes which a typical young girl would
wear, however some are clothes which she wears to try and
feel good about herself in.
A lot of the outfits worn are very casual as she spends a lot
of her time at home, therefore she doesn’t dress up to try
and impress anyone because I tried to create the idea that
when she is at home alone, she doesn’t feel the pressure
as she is happy within herself, but it is the pressure she
feels outside of her home from everyone else which makes
her feel the need to change her appearance.
Here, you can see that she is wearing
quite a fashionable outfit which she
clearly is looking at herself negatively in.
As she is looking herself up and down
you can notice that she does not feel
comfortable in the outfit, however she
wears it so that she can feel more
confident in it.
3. Location
The setting of my music video is mainly based in the protagonist’s house
as this is where she spends a lot of her time. A lot of the shots which I
took were taken in her bedroom which suggests that she spends a lot of
her time by herself. Using her bedroom as a location also shows more
about her as you can see against one of her bedroom walls that there is a
poster of models and attractive females which she aspires to be like to try
and fit in more.
Another location which was used was outdoors in her garden, and
in some fields which were located near her house. This was to
emphasise to the audience that she is alone a lot of the time. I also
thought that showing her walking on her own could create the idea
that she has a lot to think about and she uses this time to try and
clear her head about the worries that she has about herself.
This shot on the left was a wide shot which adds emphasis on the
fact that she is feeling very alone and has a lot on her mind.
4. Camera Work
I used a lot of close up shots in my music video because I felt that this could make it more powerful
and emotional as I was trying to get quite a strong message across. By using close up shots, I was
able to show the audience the protagonist’s facial expressions which clearly showed her being
unhappy and as though she had a lot on her mind.
For example, this shot her shows her looking down which
suggests that she feels down and is a very unhappy character.
I also used a lot of wide angle shots and mid shots. I used wide angle
shots so that I could show more of the surroundings and the location
which she was in. By doing this, it showed more about the characters
life as this helped to get across that she doesn’t spend time with
anyone else and she is constantly doing nothing apart from getting
ready and trying to make herself feel better. The majority of the outside
shots were wide shots and this was to emphasise the fact that nobody
was around, creating the sense of loneliness that she feels.
5. Props
The props which I used were very minimal, however the main props
which I used was makeup as this was a very important factor in my
music video. I also included her laptop and her phone as these were
things which portrayed her as a normal teenage girl as these are what
are used on a daily basic. This also acts as though these are what she
has as she has no one to connect with, again enhancing her feeling
alone.
On her laptop, she is shown to be watching Youtube videos of how to
feel more confident which shows how she spends a lot of her time,
trying to get advice on how to solve her problem of feeling bad about
herself. This is suggesting that she seeks help but doesn’t feel as
though she can directly address the problem with someone personally,
therefore she uses her laptop as a sense of escaping reality for a
while.
