1. Question 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Camera Shots
Within music videos, they tend to include a range of different shots, for example close up shots, mid shots and
long shots. I watched a range of different music videos with a similar narrative as my own music video for
example ‘Trey Songz Heart Attack’ and ‘Justin Timberlake Mirror’ to get inspiration from how different shots
helped to tell the story, add variety and entertain an audience. So I decided to include a range of different
camera shots within my own music video, for example an I used an extreme close up shot of the main female
protagonist's eyes with make up running down her face. This helped me to delivered to the audience the raw
emotion evolved within the storyline.
I also included an extreme long shot of the couple messing around, having fun as the sun sets in the background.
This is effective as it sets the scene for the happy memories within the flashbacks with the use of the romantic
sky ad the sun is setting, it also adds a variety of different shots for the audience to look at.
I enjoyed taking a range of different shots within my music video as I believed it helped me to tell the story more
effectively and present emotion in a variety of different ways.
3. Symbolic Techniques
I took inspiration from other music videos for example ‘Nicole Scherzniger Don’t hold your breathe’ of the importance of
how the main protagonist within the music video expresses emotion through facial expressions, gestures and poses. As
my music video was all about taking the audience of a journey through the main protagonists relationship and how it
was falling apart and coming to an end, I wanted to make sure that both protagonists within my music video were 100%
committed to the storyline and delivering the correct emotion on camera. Examples of different gestures used within my
music video by the male protagonist include one where you see him arguing towards the camera on a medium close up
shot. He uses his arms a lot to project anger and his facial expressions present anger too as he is frowning.
Another example of symbolic techniques is presented through the main female protagonist when she is delivering the
lyrics, reminiscing on the good and bad memories she has experienced within the relationship. Throughout the music
video, she uses a lot of different facial expressions to express her emotions by crying and looking depressed and down
when reminiscing over the sad times and the reality of her relationship falling apart, and smiling and looking happy and
in love when looking back at the positive happy times within the relationship. She uses her posture extremely well
especially towards the end of the music video when she is say on the grass with her legs tucked in and her arms wrapped
around them, this makes her look scared, lonely and vulnerable.
4. Mise en scene
The mise en scene is extremely important within a music video as it is everything that makes ups the music video for example props,
lighting, hair and makeup, location/setting and colours. I wanted to make sure that everything within my music video fitted a purpose and
helped contribute towards the storyline.
Props – I used variety of props for different reasons. I used a mobile phone within an argument scene s the male protagonist is caught
texting someone else. This makes it a lot more visual and realistic for an audience and also helped the protagonist act his scene out when
shooting the scene. I also used within my music video a lit candle in order to represent the lyrics visually.
Costume, hair and makeup – I made sure that throughout my music video that both protagonist's hair and make-up looked presentable at
all time. I also kept consistency when shooting several shots at different angles, for example when the main female protagonist is miming
along to the lyrics and different angles are shown, I made sure that her hair stayed the same in order to maintain consistency. In order to
show more emotion within my music video I was able to use make up on the main female protagonist in order to make it look like she
had been hysterically crying and her mascara was running down her face, this was effective as it made it more dramatic for the audience
to watch.
Location/setting – I wanted to add a variety of different locations within my music video to make the audience go on a journey of the
relationship has develop. I included locations such as outside behind a brick wall, by a lake, in a bedroom, in a living room, in a car, in a
field and walking along a path. I had to make sure that all lighting was correct when shooting in all locations, in order to do this I made
sure that outside shots were taking during the day or early evening so that it was still light enough to film, and when shooting inside
rooms I had to make sure that lighting was perfect by bringing in more light into the room with the use of lamps. To make shots look as
clear as possible.
5. Narrative based
In other music videos out today, you tend to get a mixture of both narrative and
performance throughout such as artists singing along to the music whilst dancing.
However, due to the fact that the song I had chosen had a reasonably slow beat, I
decided that dancing or chorography didn’t need to be included, mainly because I
wanted to focus a lot more on the story being told and the relationship being presented.
So I decided to mainly make my music video narrative based, by including flashbacks of
how the couple use to be within their relationship, and then different shots of the couple
now and how their relationship has turned into arguing with each other all of the time.
the only preformance within my music video is when the main female protagonist is
singing along to the lyrics, reminiscing on these memories I didn’t want to include any
chorography within these scenes as I felt as though her facial expressions and acting skills
presented emotion and told the story correctly.
6. Conclusion
Overall, I believe that I took
inspiration from other music
videos effectively in order to create
my own for example the different
shorts used and how important
props and lighting is. However, I
feel as though I brought some of
my own ideas to the table such as
the storyline that based my whole
music video was original and the
way in which it was told through
the acting form the two main
protagonists.
