3. Main Image
The convention of a digipak is to show the full band. We’ve
adhered to this convention because it orientates the
consumer into who’s music it is and even if they didn’t know
their name but their faces they could easily identify the CD
by the image. This therefore allows consumers to spend their
money and make the music company a profit.
Both images have been taken with high key lighting. This
convention demonstrates to consumers that their band is
aimed at the mass markets and so will be of a fun nature and
won’t offend.
We developed the convention of using a medium shot
instead of a long shot. We did this as we felt it was important
for our band’s faces to be more recognisable than the whole
body. This therefore makes it more personal for the
consumer as it seems the band is looking directly at them
and so the consumer feels obliged to buy the CD.
Finally, both images have been taken with all the members
being of the same eye line and height. This shows their unity
to consumers and suggests that their music will be of the
same uniformity.
4. Digipak title
Firstly, both texts use black and white font colours. We
used this convention because we found it was the easiest
way for the consumers to read on. This in turn would
make conveying the band’s name easier and so more
distinguished for consumers to find and so buy.
5SOS chose a font that suites them and so we followed the
same convention and chose a paint newspaper type font.
We chose this one because we wanted to keep with the
paint theme on the front so to convey an almost
rebellious, fun and unique vide to the band. We did this as
we felt those qualities would appeal to our target
audience.
Finally, both titles have been placed at the top of the
digipak. We followed this convention as we too felt the
title was most important so needed to be above
everything. Also, by being at the top consumers don’t
need to look at the whole front to see what band the
music is by so saving them time and so more likely to find
our CD quicker.
5. Paint effect
Both front panels contain an element of paint. This
convention of the genre allows bands to show a
individual, youthful and exciting feel to the branding
of the band. These therefore appeal to the target
market and so we followed the convention. We
wanted to achieve this quality plus as it linked to our
video we thought it appropriate to feature it on the
front panel.
7. Layout
The tracklist has a simple layout with the songs
being grouped together in the centre of the
panel. We followed this convention as we
wanted to make it easier for consumers to find
what other songs are on the album plus it
made the layout of the panel look clean and
inviting for someone to read.
Also, we added a barcode and small print to
the bottom of the panel. This was a vital
convention to follow as it allowed our album to
be sold with copyright laws protecting it from
being copied and sold with profits not going to
the music company.
8. Font
On All Time Low’s they use one font
for the writing of the song titles
whereas we have used a different
font for each song. This was to show
a relationship between the title and
the connotations it has with the font.
We wanted each font to give a
personality to the song so to bring a
piece of individuality to the album
which would appeal to the
consumers. Plus, it makes the panel
look more aesthetically interesting.
10. CD
Both CDs feature the album’s name on it. We
adhered to this convention as we felt it made
the form be united with the front and CD.
Also, there is a practical reason as it helps
consumers determine where the CD belongs
therefore they can look after the CD and use
it further so listening to the band’s music.
Lastly, both CDs have a drawn element to
them. Again this convention shows a
rebellious feel to the design and so the music.
Again appealing to the target market.
