Damiana da Cunha was a female Caipo Indian leader in colonial Brazil who worked to preserve her people's traditions while also supporting the Portuguese church. Diego Vasicuio was a male Native Indian priest in Peru who tried to keep his people's religious traditions alive against Spanish Catholic influence, until he was forced to denounce his beliefs. Isabel Moctezuma was the daughter of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II and had a relationship with the Spanish conquistador Fernando Cortes.
