What is Motivation? 
•Motivation is the psychological quality 
that leads people to achieve a goal. 
Types of Motivation 
1.Intrinsic motivation 
2.Extrinsic motivation
Intrinsic Motivation 
Is motivation to perform a task for its 
own sake. 
The reward is the task itself. 
Extrinsic Motivation 
Motivation to perform a task for a 
reward from outside. 
Grades, money, positive feedback.
The role of motivation in 
Second Language Learning 
• Fulfill school/University requirements. 
• Function and compete effectively in the global 
economy of today and the future. 
• Increase job opportunities and salary potential. 
• Develop intercultural sensitivity, increase global 
understanding 
• Improve vocabulary and language proficiency in order 
to communicate with members of that language 
community.
• Improve likelihood of acceptance into university 
and graduate schools. 
• Increase understanding of people in own country. 
• Gain social power (prestige) 
• Improve critical and creative thinking skills 
• Improve one’s education. 
• Enhance travel and study abroad opportunities 
• Enjoy great literary and musical masterpieces and 
films in their original language.
How to increase motivation 
among students in learning 
• Motivating students into the lesson: 
giving remarks to interest students. 
• Varying the activities, tasks and materials 
: Avoid routine and boredom 
• Using co-operative rather than 
competitive goals : When students have to 
work together as teams, increase their 
motivation to learn and win.
• Enhancing learner autonomy and freedom of choice. 
• Enhancing students’ feeling of competence, self-efficacy 
and self-esteem by providing aid and scaffolding for 
takes so they can perform them by valuing their of 
contribution to class. 
• Safe and supportive environment. 
• Providing social support in terms of group activities and 
facilitation. 
• Setting challenging and specific goals
• Present the task properly 
• Develop a good relationship with learners 
• Increase the learners linguistic self 
confidence. 
• Make the language classes interesting. 
• Personalize the learning process 
• Increase the learners goal oriented tasks.
• Provide learners with non-traditional feed back 
• Allow learners to maintain a positive social image while 
engaged in the learning task. 
• Help diminish language anxiety by removing or reducing 
the anxiety provoking elements in the learning
