  1. Using this PowerPoint break timer This PowerPoint slide uses images, custom animation, and timing to provide a countdown timer that you can use in any presentation. When you open the template, you’ll notice that the timer is set at 00:00. However, when you start the slide show, the timer will start at the correct time and count down by 1-minute intervals until it gets to 1 minute. At that point, it will count down in two 30-seconds intervals to 00:00. To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. Open the presentation that will contain the timer. On the Slides tab, place your insertion point after the slide that will precede the timer. (Make sure you don&apos;t select a slide. Your insertion point should be between the slides.) On the Insert menu, click Slides from Files . In the Slide Finder dialog box, click the Find Presentation tab.   3. Overview: Airplanes are for going places so talking about the Washington, D.C. ADIZ on the west coast is not crazy
  4. ADIZ graphic: With some exceptions in the southern boundary, the ADIZ and class B boundaries are similar BUT clearance for one does not mean clearance for the other. With this briefing you will have the basic information you need to fly into the ADIZ and associated class B if you wish.
  5. FRZ graphic: Clearance to fly in the FRZ requires extensive qualifications. Don’t plan on it if you’re not a local or commercial flight.
  6. ADIZ Entry Procedures: If you’re on an IFR flight plan you will automatically comply with the ADIZ entry procedures. The procedures we are going to discuss here are for VFR flights.
  7. ADIZ Entry Points Map: You just have to designate one of the entry points near your route of flight. You do not have to over fly the point you designate to start your ADIZ flight plan. Just get identified by Potomac and get clearance in before you cross the line.
  8. Inbound Flight Plan: As far as the computer is concerned this is an IFR flight plan so the computer will generate a “flight strip” for the appropriate controller. However, you are required to remain VMC and comply with VFR criteria.
  9. Outbound Flight Plan: The outbound is just the reverse and again, even though you are VFR you must file a flight plan in the IFR system.
  10. Departure Procedures: If there’s no tower at your departure airfield, you will have to get your squawk activate your flight plan by phone and make any departure time window that ATC assigns.
  11. Lost Communications: If you are inbound and lose either your radio or your transponder you cannot continue to your destination. You MUST exit the ADIZ immediately and contact ATC after landing. If you have an emergency that dictates landing immediately, advise ATC of your situation if possible and sort it out on the ground.

  13. “ I’ve been intercepted”: If you are intercepted by a fighter you will probably only see one at a time but there will usually be two of them and you can guess where the other one is. Minimum speed for an F-15, F-16 or F/A-18 is around 150 kts. The F-16s and F-18s will probably have VHF, the F-15 probably won’t. Helicopters are more speed compatible AND they can hold up a sign in the side door to tell you what frequency to use.
  14. Restricted Areas: The unmanned objects flying through the air in restricted airspace have no concept of “see and avoid” and could care less if they happen to hit you.
  15. Alert Areas: Good example is the alert area northwest of Phoenix along the highway every VFR pilot in Arizona uses to get from Phoenix to Las Vegas.
  16. Military Training Routes: Users include fighters, bombers and transports. Common speeds are multiples of 60 (360, 420, 480). And, yes the TFR guys do fly these things in and out of IMC.
  17. Presidential TFRs: These TFRs, in particular, can pop up after you have taken off on longer flights. Be sure to get updates en-route.
  18. Crawford TX TFR Graphic: This is what the airspace restrictions look like when the President is in Crawford. The pink circle TFR is where Air Force One was parked.
  19. Special Events TFRs: We understand sports stadiums and air shows. Just realize that more and more places are getting certified as spaceports in addition to the NASA launches and recoveries.
  20. Disaster TFRs: The only one we probably won’t see in California is a Hurricane TFR.
  21. Homland Security TFRs: The Predator UAV TFR from 16,000 to 18,000 feet.
  22. San Diego Class B: Miramar approach corridor if you are in the 12,500 to 15,000 feet altitude range you could have some surprises if you aren’t talking to ATC.
  23. Navigation Aids: If you dial an 800 number for FSS the odds are going up that you will be talking to someone way far, far away.
