Systems of Linear Equations in two variables
A system of linear equations in two variables has two variables and two
or more equations.
Let 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑑, 𝑒 and 𝑓 be any real numbers and that 𝑎 and 𝑏 are not
simultaneously zero; 𝑑 and 𝑒 are also not simultaneously zero.
We call 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐 and 𝑑𝑥 + 𝑒𝑦 = 𝑓 a system of linear equations in
two variables with two equations.
The solution to the system of equations is the values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 that
make both equations true simultaneously and can be written in the
form of an ordered pair 𝑥, 𝑦

Solving Systems of Linear Equations
in Two Variables
Solving linear equations in Two Variables by
ELIMINATION
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐
𝑑𝑥 + 𝑒𝑦 = 𝑓
STEPS:
1. Use the multiplicative property of equality to make the coefficients in front of the variable
in the two equations opposite numbers.
2. Use the additive property of equality to eliminate the intended variable with opposite
coefficients from the equations. The resulting equation is a linear equation with only one
variable.
3. Find the solution to the linear equation with one variable in (2).
4. Find the value of the eliminated variable by substituting the value of variable in (2) for the
equation or .1 2

Find the solution to the following system of equations.
2𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 7
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4
1
2
We will eliminate the variable 𝑦 by making its coefficients in the two equations opposite
numbers, using the multiplicative property of equality. Step 1
1 × 2, 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 = 14
2 × 3, 9𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 12
3
4
Then, we use the additive property of equality. Step 2
3 + 4 , 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 9𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 14 + 12
4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 9𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 14 + 12
Next, find the solution. Step 3
13𝑥 = 26
13𝑥 = 2
Lastly, substitute 𝑥 with 2 in 1 Step 4
2𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 7
13𝑥 = 26
13𝑥 = 2
Lastly, substitute 𝑥 with 2 in 1 Step 4
2 2 − 3𝑦 = 7
4 − 3𝑦 = 7
4 − 3𝑦 = 3
4 − 3𝑦 = −1
Therefore, the solution to the system of equations is 2, −1 .

Solving Systems of Linear Equations
in Two Variables
Solving linear equations in Two Variables by
Substitution
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐
𝑑𝑥 + 𝑒𝑦 = 𝑓
STEPS:
1. Choose one of the equations in order to write one variable in terms of the other variable:
𝑦 in terms of 𝑥 or 𝑥 in terms of 𝑦.
2. Substitute the variable from (1) in the other equation.
3. Solve the equation in (2) to get the value of one variable.
4. Use the value of the variable obtained from (3) to substitute back into one of the original
two equations and solve for the second variable. The values of the two variables are the
solution to the system of linear equations in two variables.

3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 17
Find the solution to the following system of equations.
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 17
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 8
1
2
From 1 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 17, we can write 𝑦 in terms of 𝑥 as
3 Step 1
Substitute 𝑦 from 3 in 2 Step 2
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 8
𝑥 + 2 3𝑥 − 17 = 8, which is an equation in one variable
Solve for 𝑥. Step 3
𝑥 + 2 3𝑥 − 17 = 8
𝑥 + 6𝑥 − 34 = 8
7𝑥 = 42
7𝑥 = 6
Substitute 𝑥 with 6 in 3 Step 4
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 17
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 3 6 − 17
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 18 − 17
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 1
Therefore, the solution to the system of linear equations

Substitute 𝑥 from 3 in 1 Step 2
3𝑥 = 9 − 2𝑦
3 3 − 𝑦 = 9 − 2𝑦, which is an equation in one variable
Solve for 𝑦. Step 3
3 3 − 𝑦 = 9 − 2𝑦
9 − 3𝑦 = 9 − 2𝑦
0 = 𝑦
𝑦 = 0
Substitute 𝑦 with 0 in 3 Step 4
𝑥 = 3 − 𝑦
𝑥 = 3 − 0
𝑥 = 3
Therefore, the solution to the system of linear equations
is 3,0
