Disenfranchisement In “Franchise”. Isaac Asimov’S 1955
Disenfranchisement in Franchise
Isaac Asimov s 1955 short story Franchise tells the story of a future United States in which all
elections are decided by a supercomputer, known as Multivac. In order to work, a single citizen is
selected to answer a series of questions; Multivac uses that person s responses along with other
information to determine who the winner of an election is. This story works as a prime example of the
concept of subjectivity as discussed in Jeffrey Nealon and Susan Searls Giroux s book The Theory
Toolbox.
Nealon and Giroux define subjectivity by exploring the distinction between self and subject. The
authors write that self is that which is primary, untouched by cultural influences ; continuing, they
write that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the very beginning, it seems that the supposedly free self is already a responding subject (39).
This dual nature is evident in the main character of Asimov s Franchise, Norman Muller.
Norman Muller is average; even his name seems to hint at that. A description early in the story
reinforces that sense of averageness:
His forehead bore deepening lines born of uncertainty and, in general, he had never seduced his
clerkly soul with the thought that he was either born great or would under any circumstances achieve
greatness. He had a wife, a job and a little girl and except under extraordinary conditions of elation or
depression was inclined to consider that to be an adequate bargain struck with life. (4)
While by no means a unique individual, Norman seems to have some sense of self based upon this
description. He did not feel the urge to set himself apart from others or to define himself to be some
sort of false greatness. Norman is perfectly happy with his average self, his adequate bargain struck
with life. As excitement grows in the Muller house about the possibility of the vote happening in
Indiana, Norman s anxiety seems to increase over this adequate bargain being at risk.
Perhaps Norman is fearful of being selected voter of the year because he recognizes the erasure of
self, however average it may be, when he is plugged into Multivac. His grandfather in law talks about
how he cast votes in

Modern Aboriginal Issues Essay
Modern Aboriginal Issues
The first Europeans to settle Australia treated the Aboriginals in a brutal, unfair manor. They
downgraded Aboriginals to a lower status as human beings. They tried to force the Aboriginals to
conform to the western way of life for more than 200 years. It is only fairly recently that the
Aboriginals have finally been able to gain back some of their indigenous rights and traditions.
Yet they are still deficient in many areas. The land that their ancestors held has not all been returned to
them, they struggle to meet the requirements of western education systems, and they have a very
limited access to health care. In spite of these problems, many aboriginals are working ... Show more

There are many barriers that have been broken down since this time, but many still remain.
The Aboriginals first came to Australia around 60,000 years ago from South East Asia. They came to
the continent by boat in a time when the oceans were easier to cross, yet they still had to cover great
distances. There were many waves of immigration; the Aboriginals do not stem from one single group.
Upon reaching the northern coast, some Aboriginals settled, but others dispersed across the entire land
mass. Eventually many diverse tribes inhabited almost all of the territory. They lived in a loose
communal lifestyle with deep kinship connections. The population remained fairly steady at around
300,000 people living on the continent at any time for some 2,000 generations, or 50,000 years. There
were upwards of 200 languages, each with more than one dialect. The Aboriginals formed a literal
meshwork across the Australian expanse.
Aboriginals inhabited every ecosystem including the coasts, woodlands, tropical forests, rivers, and
the interior desert. Most of the tools that they used were made from bones, stone, and wood. Their
nomadic lifestyle limited them to only a few basic necessities that they would carry with them all the
time.
The Aboriginals had many varied religions, but in essence they believed that their ancestors were the
rocks, trees, and other structures

Huckleberry Finn Analysis
All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.
(Hemingway). In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, the novel is all about
creating something new from rejecting the old and having some hatred and violence.
Moreover In America, there are a lot of people who are seeking for a change and when they achieve it
there is a great amount of hatred and jealousy created against them because of that change, and then
people lead to violence.
American literature always tends to create something new, they have violence in it and the The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the best example of it. In the article Main Characteristics Of
American Literature by Luka Malgaj states that, Rejected the old in order to create something new
(Malgaj).
New writers often tend to reject the old type of literature and change it to create a new type of
literature, this is what Twain wanted and he did so. He used the dialogues in his novel in the exact
same pronunciation to show realism. He wanted his audience to feel the same as him while writing the
novel. He is setting a scene for everyone to feel the situation so we get more interested in it.
Rejected the old in order to create something new
As we know that American literature is vast and has a lot of examples of the great passion of writing
and showing their best examples of their own perspective upon America and the whole world. Twain
also wanted to make a change in the

War Of The Worlds Environmental Disaster
Hollywood has had a history of producing apocalyptic science fiction films in which certain societies
are faced with life threatening conditions and have to look to other planets for gathering resources.
Movies such as Oblivion (directed by Joseph Kozinsky) and War of the Worlds (Steven Spielberg)
focus on aliens who arrive on Earth, looking to wipe out humankind in hopes of obtaining the planet s
food and water to sustain their own population. They are seen to be evil and greedy creatures who care
for no other species except for themselves. However, despite their attempts to take over Earth, these
resource hungry aliens eventually retreat back to their own worlds with empty hands after being

Cooper and Murphy stumble upon a NASA facility hidden from the public and find out later that it is

Professor Brand asks Joe to help in piloting a spaceship to a wormhole that has opened up near Saturn,
in order to travel light years to explore another galaxy. Joe questions his former professor and asks,
Shouldn t that energy be put into saving our home planet? Brand responds by giving Joe his own
opinion on humanity s relationship with Earth. Earth s atmosphere is 80 percent nitrogen. We don t

The renaissance period was the time in which the elements of humanism were considered as priority.
Humanism is the ethical point of view of life that helps aspire the greater side of humanity. Humanism
was not properly appreciated until late 15th century in which it was reborn. This revival is the exact
translation of the word Renaissance. The Renaissance followed the Middle Ages from late 1400 and
extended al the way to 1600. Historians claim that this irrational philosophical belief of humanism
was outwitted by religious and divine beliefs. Controversies arose on the fact that rebirth of humanity
wasn t developed until late period of the Renaissance, whereas the major event were based upon the
medieval history of Jerusalem. The attention revolved around the church and the ambition to attain

We tend to think that whether one ought to be retained in a particular job position depends on whether
they are qualified for the job, rather than whether they are a generally decent person. Suggesting that
Tiger, Kobe, Magic, or Jordan should not be allowed to pursue their profession in virtue of their
personal indiscretions would amount to a unique kind of discrimination. From the standpoint of
employment qualifications, one s sexual behavior is usually an irrelevant consideration. This brings us
to the second consideration concerning punishment in one s professional life based on actions in one s
personal life. We tend to think that there is an important separation between one s public life and one s
private affairs. When one is a celebrity like Tiger Woods, this line is blurred considerably, and one
might claim that the loss of this distinction is the price one pays for fame. However, this imposes an
arbitrary constraint on a person s individual freedoms. If one has a right to the maintenance of a public
and a private sphere, the fact that a person is famous is not obviously a reason for violating this right.
THE COMPANIES THAT DROPPED TIGER WOODS The second ethical question raised by the
Tiger Woods affair scandal concerns whether it is ethical to break a professional contract based on a
person s actions in their personal life. This is a complicated question, and I will limit the discussion to
one pertinent facet of it. If Tiger

Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact
Science fiction is a genre that empowers our imagination. It acts like a thinking cap, allowing us to
think of new ideas to invest in and invent. This genre has resulted in many innovations that are
beneficial to mankind, such as credit cards, which enabled faster transactions in money. Another
example is the internet, which enabled us to share ideas quickly. However, this time, we will be
talking about a piece in science fiction that has not been made in real life yet, but is close to it. This
material is call Absolute Black. Before the invention of Vantablack, a modern technology, Douglas

The scene in the story showed one of the main characters moving towards a ship that was covered
with it. The character claimed that he couldn t even tell how far away he was from it, and it was to be
used to create spectacular effects for a rock concert(Adams 1). Before Douglas Adams wrote that
book, though, he first left school in 1970 in order to pursue his career in writing. However, the effects
were disastrous, so he had to take a few low paying jobs in order to continue. In 1976, Adams wrote a
play which allowed him to earn some cash to last him all the way until 1977. Adams didn t give up,
though, and in 1978, he wrote his first successful book, The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. It was a
best selling story, becoming the most popular book in the UK. It is what inspired Adams to write the
second book in the series, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, in 1980(2). It is perseverance

How To Break A Dragged Skin
Brushes of various sorts are excellent on bare skin, especially when the submissive is blindfolded. For
example, a soft brush such as a shaving or makeup brush can be alternated with a stiff brush such as a
toothbrush on breasts, nipples, thighs, sides, and so on. An electric toothbrush makes a wonderful sex
toy when used on a clitoris... A bamboo skewer of the type used in the kitchen is quite an interesting
sensation toy when it s used on a bound and blindfolded person. Dragged slowly and with moderate
pressure over the skin, it feels much sharper than it is; used on sensitive areas like nipples and breasts,
you can make someone believe you re actually piercing the skin with a needle, even though the

paper towels. Cut the cardboard tube lengthwise, then close it into a cylinder that s as wide as you
want the dildo to be, and tape it. Fill the condom with water, tie it shut, and suspend it in the tube with
a piece of string; the cardboard tube will prevent the water from bulging in the dildo. Then place it

Persuasive Essay On Redemption
In the Bible there is a story about a cruel and hateful man named Saul. He would track down and kill
anyone belonging to the then new Christian faith, and he hated anything to do with Jesus. He would
put both men and women into prison, and he was responsible for approving the stoning of one of the
seven disciples told to go out and tell people about Jesus, Stephen. And he is probably one of the most
classic examples of redemption known to Western Christian civilization. To put his long story
concisely, he was traveling to Damascus and then Jesus approached him from heaven, blinding him
with light and telling him he needed to do what Jesus said. Blind and helpless, he didn t eat or drink
anything for three days, and then Jesus sent a man named Ananias who was actually very much afraid
of Saul to heal his blindness, because God had chosen him to be a disciple. When Saul was healed, he
turned away from his genocidal ways, and eventually became known as Paul, a messenger of the
Good News of Christ and the main writer of a chunk of the New Testament of the Bible. This Saul to
Paul effect, while one of the earlier examples of redemption from evil acts, has certainly not been the
last. Redemption has always been a controversial topic, particularly if one s crimes are numerous
and/or horrific part of the reason the death penalty is so often debated in America for its morality. But
what people have really never agreed on is where the breaking point is of what can be forgiven and

Innovative Approaches to Corporate Management
A company is only as strong as its weakest link. In order for it to succeed in today s competitive
market, the company will have to depend on the acquisition and application of good, relevant
knowledge on which to base its decisions. For that to happen, good and sound decision making has to
be a part of everyday business. Therefore, corporate managers have taken innovative approaches to
corporate management by creating consistency and unity towards a purpose, along with an
environment where both the company and employees can excel.

he used as guidelines for his leadership strategy.
First, Create discipline through purpose (Unknown, 2003). Abrashoff did away with the diversity and
instituted a unity program to help the crew focus on the ship s common purpose and become a team
through communication and support of each other.
Basically, he wanted to instill in them that there is no I in team.
Second, Listen and communicate aggressively (Unknown, 2003). Here he interviewed the crew
extensively, asking about family and personal background. He told them what he needed from them
and asked them what he could do for them to help them achieve their goals. In doing so, he was able
to produce an environment where anyone could critique anyone else on the ship through proper
communication channels.
Finally, Be a champion for your team (Unknown, 2003). If the crew needed something and it was
within his power to obtain it, he would give it to the crew. They eventually came to believe that they

larger International community more than any other European monarch. Firstly, King Leopold II
sinisterly orchestrated a colonization operation that is comparative to a genocidal regime. Secondly,
King Leopold II s actions in the Congo led unified condemnation across oceans from a broad range of
socioeconomic statues. Lastly, the opposition forces against King Leopold II s colonization of Congo
helped pave the way for future justice on the continent as well as internationally. Ultimately, this

Unlike the slave traders who came before him, King Leopold managed to take possession of and
exploit the indigenous people of Congo, their land, and their resources on an unprecedented scale. He
obtained a network of valuable raw materials and millions free laborers to extract them. At the hands
of King Leopold II s workers, the people of Congo suffered horrific travesties. Not only did they
suffer the loss of their land, the people of Congo were the victims of a hostile militant take over, who s
main purpose was to become a profitable service to the King s ever growing greed. His beloved pet
project would later prove to be an efficient murder machine. In order to gather resources and labor for
the King s projects, workers acted mercilessly. They swindled land from local Congo tribes, held
women hostage, and forced children into work.(109)(111) (119). George Washington Williams best
penned King Leopold II s cruelty in his detailed documentation. His account contrasted the lies that
King Leopold fed the public while simultaneously addressing the barbaric methods employed such as
chain gangs, capturing women, forced laborers, and shooting for sport. (Pages 110 111) The result of
this barbaric approach to harvest raw materials was the loss of people estimating to be half of the total

from the university. This way participants come from all backgrounds not only undergraduates and
graduates. This study only makes generalizations from the population of 18 through 25 year old young
adults who are undergraduates or graduates that have dealt with parents whom suffer from alcoholism,
substance use, and mental illness. The study does not generalize the population of 18 through 25 year
olds that are not in college. This population that does not attend college are hard to obtain for research

History Of The Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago of roughly 19 islands and several smaller islets, covering 620
miles off the Ecuadorian coast in the Pacific Ocean. Both the land and sea are protected, making the
island a World Heritage site. The islands are recognized for its unique wildlife, especially because of
the lack of predators. Visitors can interact with the friendly wildlife such as playful sea lions and
gigantic sea tortoises, up close and personal. The incredible animal species served as the inspiration
for Charles Darwin s Theory of Evolution after his visit to the islands in 1835. Each of these actively
volcanic isolated isles boasts its own set of unique species, but share similar environment, and climate.
It is one of the most outstanding marine ecosystems in the world, situated at the confluence of three
ocean currents.
Prior to Spanish discovery of the islands in 1535, there is little evidence to support any permanent
settlement. Spaniard Fray Tomas de Berlanga s vessel drifted off course on a trip to Peru and reached
the islands. The English followed in 1593, and Irish sailor Patrick Watkins is believed to be the first to
establish a permanent settlement on Floreana, when he was stranded between 1807 and 1809. In 1959,

This song seemed to require the most work from the performers as it used a wide range of dynamics,
pitches, and tempo. The last song of the evening, and probably my favorite (not just because it was the

lead by the flutes and clarinets, made the song very enjoyable to hear and also had a very happy feel to
it, which, in my mind, made it a very appropriate closer. The song started with a great tempo but a
relatively soft dynamic. This quickly changed about half way through the song when the dynamics
picked up. The loud dynamics with the fast tempo at the end of the song had a very grandiose sound

Chaucer s Treatment Of Women In The Canterbury Tales
In the 14th century, women were not given much respect, nor nearly as valued as men were. The
women were the keepers of the house, because the men portrayed women to be weak and cannot do
anything except clean and cook. The men most likely had more than one wife, so the men would treat
the women different depending on what she gave him. Most likely at the age of 15, women got
married and had children. The women were sent to tend needs for their children and do house work,
while their husbands would do the labor and pay taxes for the family. The women had been looked
down upon and seen to be not worth anything to their husbands. The husbands took advantage of their
wives and showed no love or appreciation to them. Women are viewed as objects ... Show more

The little ones will need to rest, especially after a trip by plane . Real emotional sponges, they cash all

Therefore, the first item to address is to begin gifting the maximum amount per year to his children of
currently $14,000 per year free of any taxes per IRC § 2503. Anything above that amount per year to
the children would trigger IRC § 2501 (a) (1) which will tax any amount over the $14,000 and need to
be paid by the gift giver as opposed to the receiver per IRC § 102. Additionally, if the donor gifts more
than the yearly dollar limit, IRS form 709 is required to be filed. However, due to IRC § 2001, there
may not be any actual tax owed if the amount is less than the lifetime allowable unified credit

exempted from, taxation are gifts made to educational institutions on behalf of another person and to
healthcare facilities to assist individuals when there are extenuating medical expenses not covered by
insurance per IRC § 2503 (e) (2) (A) and (B) respectively. Also, bequests made to approved charitable
organizations are exempt from the gross estate at their FMV. Furthermore, life insurance policies may
also be excluded from the estate if they name a charity as the beneficiary per IRC § 2055.

My Perfect Vacation Home
As a family, every once in a while we need a vacation where we can get a great getaway from the
norm and hustles of life. A perfect vacation home in the florida keys makes the purpose for my family
and me. I can t think of a better place to spend my summer than in this perfectly weathered place that
glares at the face of the ocean. It s always a new experience every weekend we visit the place no
matter how often we do, it s always a perfect place for me.
Earlier on when I was a teenager, my parents had a holiday cabin in the mountains, a place far from
our house. However, it was a cool place to be, free from all the noise in the city and beautiful snow
mountains, for me a vacation mean not only means a cool place with convenience, but also a place
you can feel free and get to bond with the environment freely and adorably. When people hear of
vacation homes especially in such a place as in Florida, what comes to mind is that it s got to be very
expensive to get a home in such a place with all the high property prices and the interest rates
involved. However, coming to think of it again, the package that comes with such a house as
compared to the other options such as a rented home are just incomparable. There various notable
things that are made me love our vacation home and not think of other place nor other option. Like I
stated earlier, we previously had a vacation home in the mountains far from the place we lived but it
was not until we got a new vacation house in

dutch words in his poem, like strand (now: beach). Here we have somebody who writes the name of
the person he loves on the beach, because he wants the world to know he s in love. It s not clever
because when the tide comes, the waves will wash it away. In poetry they use metaphor. An example :
you are like a red rose , a red rose is a metaphor for beauty. Line 1 2: One day I wrote her name upon

Partnering With The Holy Spirit Essay
Partnering with the Holy Spirit In the book, The Spirit of the Disciplines, Dallas Willard presents
some spiritual disciplines within the eleven chapters, an epilogue, and two appendixes. He titles
Chapter Nine with, Some main Disciplines for the Spiritual Life, and begins the chapter by saying, A
discipline for the spiritual life is, when the dust of history is blown away, nothing but an activity
undertaken to bring us into more effective cooperation with Christ and his Kingdom. In the next
section of the chapter, Willard asks the following questions, What are the particular activities that can
serve as disciplines for the spiritual life? And which should we choose for our individual strategy for
spiritual growth? To answer his own question, Willard poses that we need not try to come up with a
complete list of disciplines. Nor should we assume that practices will have a strong claim to be on
every list. Nevertheless, Willard does indeed list a few including: solitude, silence, fasting, frugality,
chastity, secrecy, sacrifice, study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession and
submission. He also goes on to say that there are those who are too used to the better things in life and
poses that grocery shopping, banking and other business in the poorer areas of the city are effective
spiritual disciplines because [it] has an immense effect on our understanding of and behavior toward

Harriet Beecher Stowe And His Family Essay
During the 1800s slavery was common. Although, many people thought it was wrong and sinful, some
actually did not mind the practice. Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family were one of many who were
activists in the anti slavery movement. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June 14, 1811. Her
father, Lyman Beecher, was a Calvinist preacher, and her mother, Roxana Foote, died when she was
four. When Stowe was 25 years old, she married Calvin Ellis Stowe, who was also against slavery and
a well known minister. Stowe s sister, Isabella Beecher Hooker, was an advocate for women s rights.
Another of her sisters, Catherine, founded a school to offer education for young women. Uncle Tom s
Cabin is about the life of Tom, an african slave, who was sold to a trader because of the debt owed by
his master. He was being moved to the South where he would begin his life like he has never done.
Slavery has always been a sorrowful topic, so when we were given the years between 1492 to 1870, it
came to mind right away. Google gave a handful of books to read, but only this mysterious title stroke
curiosity.
The book started off with a conversation between two men, Mr. Shelby, a farmer, and Mr. Haley, who
is a trader. They were discussing the conduct of their slaves. Mr. Shelby had a plethora of positive
things to say about his slaves because he was a very nice person. Mr. Haley on the other hand, was
very negative and did not trust any slave. Shelby spoke about this one particular slave

The Balanced Scorecard And How It Is Used For A...
Introduction
This report outlines the what the balanced scorecard is and how it is used as a tool used in the business
industry. It outlines its historical development and analyses its usefulness and how it can be applied to
key decisions.
The Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard is a performance management tool that assists in the management of an
organisation s business strategy using traditional financial measurements combined with non financial
information (Candle 2008). Kaplan and Norton (1992), the creators of the concept, introduced the
business scorecard as 4 main perspectives, customer, learning and growth, financial and internal
business process. They breakdown the meaning behind each perspective is as follows: The customer ...

By collecting and analysing the information found, organisations can keep track of their management
system to create opportunities and improve on any shortcomings, making their business more efficient
and effective.
Historical Development of the Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard was brought into attention by Robert Kaplan and David Norton (Kaplan and
Norton 1992). In 1990, the Naplan Norton institute sponsored a one year study, Measuring
Performance in the Organization of the Future (Robertson 2005). This was organised due to concerns
that quantitative financial tools were becoming less useful. David Norton was the study leader whilst
Robert Kaplan was the academic consultant. Many companies, from varying industries, took part in
this study in an effort to establish a more effective performance strategy tool. This led to the creation
of the balanced scorecard and a Harvard Business Review article on the balanced scorecard in 1992 by
Kaplan and Norton (Cobbold and Lawrie 2002). In 1996, a book was published by Kaplan and Norton
where a modified version, the second generation, of the scorecard was introduced as it did not give a
more distinct definition of what a balanced scorecard was and how to apply it (Ahmadgourabi,
Efteghar and Poureisa 2013). Using strategy maps, cause effect chains were added to provide more
contextual reasoning behind decisions to make it

Cost of Living
Measuring the Cost of Living
Overview:
Last time we discussed the most important measure of economic well being real, per capita GDP.
Further, if we want to see how our economic well being is changing over time, we can calculate how
real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter).
Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy.
We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time.
The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples incomes and the prices of goods and services
increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned $35,000.
Now, a (bad) ice cream sundae costs $4.50 and a typical economics professor ... Show more content

We have to figure out what a typical consumer buys. Imagine a shopping cart you fill it up with items
that a typical consumer will purchase.
Step 2: Find the prices:
Now that we have our basket, we can track prices on the items in the cart and see how much it all
costs.
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket:
Let s determine the cost of the basket from year to year
Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index:
Pick a year to serve as a benchmark a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use the
cost in benchmark year (called a base year ) relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are interested
in to calculate a cost if living index.
Step 5: Compute the inflation rate:
This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms.
To see these steps in action, consider the following example (from the textbook):
Step 1: Fix the basket:
Well, suppose that what we see consumers typically buying are 4 hot dogs and 2 hamburgers that is
what is in their shopping cart...
Step 2: Find the price of each good in each year:
This is just observing prices every year...
Year: Price of hot dogs: Price of hamburgers:
2001 $1 $2
2002: $2 $3
2003: $3 $4
Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket in each year:
Let s see how much the stuff in the cart costs from year to year...

Character Analysis Of Flowers For Algernon
Flowers for Algernon In the short story, Flowers for Algernon , Daniel Keyes writes about an
intellectually disabled man named Charlie Gordon. Charlie s goal is to become intelligent. Charlie
volunteered to be in a medical trial that would help him triple in intelligence. The operation did work,
and Charlie s intelligence tripled very quickly. However, very soon after, his intelligence began to
quickly decline. Charlie ended up with the same amount of intelligence that he started with. Charlie
Gordon is not better off as a result of the surgery. He was lonely, much more aware of his flaws, and
he had much less hope at the end of the story. Charlie Gordon was very lonely at the end of the story.

This makes him upset and angry at himself for not understanding what was happening. On page 193,
Daniel Keyes writes, I m ashamed. This was the first time that Charlie truly showed his emotions and
understood how it felt to regret something. After the operation, Charlie felt things like shame, regret
and loneliness. However, before, he didn t feel any of these. Such emotions can make someone
depressed, which is exactly what Charlie was. Daniel Keyes illustrates this when Charlie says It is
hard to throw away thoughts of suicide. (page 302) This shows just how serious Charlie s condition
really was at the end of the story. For these reasons, Charlie is more aware of the things that he does
wrong after the surgery. To continue, Charlie has much less hope after the operation. Once Charlie
realizes that his intelligence is likely to decrease juristically, he starts to lose hope in ever staying as
smart as he used to be. In the beginning, he was always so hopeful and trusting of everyone around
him and himself. Daniel Keyes describes this idea when Charlie says Their going to use me! Im so
exited I can hardly write (page 286) This was in the beginning when all Charlie wanted was to be
smart and be given a chance to be in the experiment. This quote shows how happy and excited Charlie
was when he was told that he would be used. Charlie carries this excitement through most of the story,
meaning that he continues to be happy. Once his intelligence begins to

Effect Of The On A Sport Event
Firstly, he depicts the multiplier used by each of the impact studies. A multiplier is a coefficient, which
displays the multiplier effect on the economy when visitors spend money on a sport event. The money
spent in the host community will launch a ripple effect, thus converting the direct impact of the
spending into indirect and induced impacts on the economy. A higher multiplier suggests, that more of
the initial injection of money into the economy stays within without leaking out of the local economy.
Consequently a higher multiplier leads to a higher economic impact (Crompton 1995). An example of
how the multiplier works is shown in Figure 2. The figure assumes that visitors spend $10.000 due to
the sport franchise, at four different establishments. The hotel serves as an example for how these
establishments further distribute the initial injection of money. The money that stays within the local
economy is spent in the same five ways over and over as successive rounds of spending occur
(Crompton 1995).

Figure 2: How the multiplier concept operates (Source: (Crompton 1995))
Authors of a community guide to tourism development cited by Crompton (1995) suggest that 90% to
95% of U.S. county income multipliers lie between 1.4 and 1.8. Several of
Crompton s found misapplications alter the multiplier directly, such as using the sales instead of the
income multiplier or using the incremental rather than the normal approach to derive the coefficient of
the multiplier. Both

The Influence Of Lin Vs. Lin On Chinese Foreign Relations
In the 1839 Chinese foreign relations was based on what was good for China. If they were making
profits, everything was peachy. But if more harm was being done than good, the Chinese as Lin Zexu
says, would remove it for the world. China was very strict on Europeans living in China. Emperor
Qian only allowed Europeans that he thought in service of the dynasty to stay, and they must obey
strict rules. Europeans had to adopt Chinese dress, were forced to stay in their designated precincts ,
and were never allowed to return to or communicate with their home country. It was the respect of
these rules by the British rulers, according to Lin that China had welcomed so hospitably trade with
England for last two hundred years. But recently Lin describes a change in the English trade. He
begins to describe this group as barbarians that are interested only in profit, regardless of who they
hurt. they were taking advantage of the Chinese people, something the Chinese government saw as a
huge harm that they needed to remove.
Lin s biggest argument in his letter to Queen Victoria, is China s ability to close their ports. ... Show

He knows that smoking opium is illegal in England, showing that they know the harm that it causes.
So he asks the queen if you know it is bad for your people, why push it on others? That is the
difference to Lin between British and Chinese trade. Chinese are about profits without harm, while the
British are not able to see past the money. He even flips the situation, describing a group of people
taking advantage of the English, driving the message home with a sideways compliment. Lin tells
Queen Victoria that she is kind and benevolent so she would not wish to give unto others what [she

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change yourself and the world.
There is a reason why every civilization throughout time has valued education, because it truly can
alter our collective condition and make our lives easier, simpler, and most crucially, happier! From
Egyptians learning to write on papyrus tablets to late nineteenth century scientists striving to discover
medicines like penicillin, there has always been an urge in humanity to be better and to be more than
what we have been before. Man s highest achievements the building of bridges and overwhelming

The strength and force of education is visible to anyone who cares to look at the recent Egyptian
revolution, where young students, with minds opened to the wonders of democracy, through
education, helped overthrow the yoke of suffering that their parents had silently borne. Education is
the silent and effective weapon of nonviolence, which can help people and societies break the cycle of
oppression that many have historically suffered from. Many oppressed societies, where dictators have
thrived, have had a paucity of education avenues.
Education liberates the mind from its shackles and fears and encourages it to challenge and to
communicate with others. It is not without a reason that education is at the bottom of the priority list
of dictators. It was also not without reason that upon annexation of neighboring states. Many dictators
find it easy to unscrupulously deny people education or better still, manipulate education to serve their
own selfish interests. Throughout history, and even today, autocratic leaders censor literature and
books and prevent potent ideas from spreading since they realize that an idea is the most powerful
force in the world and can transform a human being completely. More importantly though, to me, an

  • 2. Disenfranchisement In “Franchise”. Isaac Asimov’S 1955 Disenfranchisement in Franchise Isaac Asimov s 1955 short story Franchise tells the story of a future United States in which all elections are decided by a supercomputer, known as Multivac. In order to work, a single citizen is selected to answer a series of questions; Multivac uses that person s responses along with other information to determine who the winner of an election is. This story works as a prime example of the concept of subjectivity as discussed in Jeffrey Nealon and Susan Searls Giroux s book The Theory Toolbox. Nealon and Giroux define subjectivity by exploring the distinction between self and subject. The authors write that self is that which is primary, untouched by cultural influences ; continuing, they write that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the very beginning, it seems that the supposedly free self is already a responding subject (39). This dual nature is evident in the main character of Asimov s Franchise, Norman Muller. Norman Muller is average; even his name seems to hint at that. A description early in the story reinforces that sense of averageness: His forehead bore deepening lines born of uncertainty and, in general, he had never seduced his clerkly soul with the thought that he was either born great or would under any circumstances achieve greatness. He had a wife, a job and a little girl and except under extraordinary conditions of elation or depression was inclined to consider that to be an adequate bargain struck with life. (4) While by no means a unique individual, Norman seems to have some sense of self based upon this description. He did not feel the urge to set himself apart from others or to define himself to be some sort of false greatness. Norman is perfectly happy with his average self, his adequate bargain struck with life. As excitement grows in the Muller house about the possibility of the vote happening in Indiana, Norman s anxiety seems to increase over this adequate bargain being at risk. Perhaps Norman is fearful of being selected voter of the year because he recognizes the erasure of self, however average it may be, when he is plugged into Multivac. His grandfather in law talks about how he cast votes in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Modern Aboriginal Issues Essay Modern Aboriginal Issues The first Europeans to settle Australia treated the Aboriginals in a brutal, unfair manor. They downgraded Aboriginals to a lower status as human beings. They tried to force the Aboriginals to conform to the western way of life for more than 200 years. It is only fairly recently that the Aboriginals have finally been able to gain back some of their indigenous rights and traditions. Yet they are still deficient in many areas. The land that their ancestors held has not all been returned to them, they struggle to meet the requirements of western education systems, and they have a very limited access to health care. In spite of these problems, many aboriginals are working ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many barriers that have been broken down since this time, but many still remain. The Aboriginals first came to Australia around 60,000 years ago from South East Asia. They came to the continent by boat in a time when the oceans were easier to cross, yet they still had to cover great distances. There were many waves of immigration; the Aboriginals do not stem from one single group. Upon reaching the northern coast, some Aboriginals settled, but others dispersed across the entire land mass. Eventually many diverse tribes inhabited almost all of the territory. They lived in a loose communal lifestyle with deep kinship connections. The population remained fairly steady at around 300,000 people living on the continent at any time for some 2,000 generations, or 50,000 years. There were upwards of 200 languages, each with more than one dialect. The Aboriginals formed a literal meshwork across the Australian expanse. Aboriginals inhabited every ecosystem including the coasts, woodlands, tropical forests, rivers, and the interior desert. Most of the tools that they used were made from bones, stone, and wood. Their nomadic lifestyle limited them to only a few basic necessities that they would carry with them all the time. The Aboriginals had many varied religions, but in essence they believed that their ancestors were the rocks, trees, and other structures ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Huckleberry Finn Analysis All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. (Hemingway). In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, the novel is all about creating something new from rejecting the old and having some hatred and violence. Moreover In America, there are a lot of people who are seeking for a change and when they achieve it there is a great amount of hatred and jealousy created against them because of that change, and then people lead to violence. American literature always tends to create something new, they have violence in it and the The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the best example of it. In the article Main Characteristics Of American Literature by Luka Malgaj states that, Rejected the old in order to create something new (Malgaj). New writers often tend to reject the old type of literature and change it to create a new type of literature, this is what Twain wanted and he did so. He used the dialogues in his novel in the exact same pronunciation to show realism. He wanted his audience to feel the same as him while writing the novel. He is setting a scene for everyone to feel the situation so we get more interested in it. Rejected the old in order to create something new As we know that American literature is vast and has a lot of examples of the great passion of writing and showing their best examples of their own perspective upon America and the whole world. After securely locking the window, he discovers the dust had formed into an unusual pattern, similar to a binary code for the geographical location of a certain place. Upon reaching the coordinates, Cooper and Murphy stumble upon a NASA facility hidden from the public and find out later that it is run by his former teacher, Professor Brand (Michael Caine), and the professor s daughter Amelia (Anne Hathaway). The professor explains to Joe that this entire facility is a space station meant to take off in the future to another habitable planet. However, the first mission is to find a planet, and Professor Brand asks Joe to help in piloting a spaceship to a wormhole that has opened up near Saturn, in order to travel light years to explore another galaxy. Joe questions his former professor and asks, Shouldn t that energy be put into saving our home planet? Brand responds by giving Joe his own opinion on humanity s relationship with Earth. Earth s atmosphere is 80 percent nitrogen. We don t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives our air gets less and less oxygen. The last people to starve will be the first people to suffocate. We re not meant to save the world; we re meant to leave it. In response to the current state of the planet, we see that ... From the standpoint of employment qualifications, one s sexual behavior is usually an irrelevant consideration. This brings us to the second consideration concerning punishment in one s professional life based on actions in one s personal life. We tend to think that there is an important separation between one s public life and one s private affairs. When one is a celebrity like Tiger Woods, this line is blurred considerably, and one might claim that the loss of this distinction is the price one pays for fame. However, this imposes an arbitrary constraint on a person s individual freedoms. If one has a right to the maintenance of a public and a private sphere, the fact that a person is famous is not obviously a reason for violating this right. • 12. Persuasive Essay On Redemption In the Bible there is a story about a cruel and hateful man named Saul. He would track down and kill anyone belonging to the then new Christian faith, and he hated anything to do with Jesus. He would put both men and women into prison, and he was responsible for approving the stoning of one of the seven disciples told to go out and tell people about Jesus, Stephen. And he is probably one of the most classic examples of redemption known to Western Christian civilization. To put his long story concisely, he was traveling to Damascus and then Jesus approached him from heaven, blinding him with light and telling him he needed to do what Jesus said. Blind and helpless, he didn t eat or drink anything for three days, and then Jesus sent a man named Ananias who was actually very much afraid of Saul to heal his blindness, because God had chosen him to be a disciple. When Saul was healed, he turned away from his genocidal ways, and eventually became known as Paul, a messenger of the Good News of Christ and the main writer of a chunk of the New Testament of the Bible. This Saul to Paul effect, while one of the earlier examples of redemption from evil acts, has certainly not been the last. Redemption has always been a controversial topic, particularly if one s crimes are numerous and/or horrific part of the reason the death penalty is so often debated in America for its morality. • 27. Partnering With The Holy Spirit Essay Partnering with the Holy Spirit In the book, The Spirit of the Disciplines, Dallas Willard presents some spiritual disciplines within the eleven chapters, an epilogue, and two appendixes. He titles Chapter Nine with, Some main Disciplines for the Spiritual Life, and begins the chapter by saying, A discipline for the spiritual life is, when the dust of history is blown away, nothing but an activity undertaken to bring us into more effective cooperation with Christ and his Kingdom. In the next section of the chapter, Willard asks the following questions, What are the particular activities that can serve as disciplines for the spiritual life? And which should we choose for our individual strategy for spiritual growth? To answer his own question, Willard poses that we need not try to come up with a complete list of disciplines. Nor should we assume that practices will have a strong claim to be on every list. Nevertheless, Willard does indeed list a few including: solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, secrecy, sacrifice, study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession and submission. He also goes on to say that there are those who are too used to the better things in life and poses that grocery shopping, banking and other business in the poorer areas of the city are effective spiritual disciplines because [it] has an immense effect on our understanding of and behavior toward our neighbors both rich ... • 28. Harriet Beecher Stowe And His Family Essay During the 1800s slavery was common. Although, many people thought it was wrong and sinful, some actually did not mind the practice. Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family were one of many who were activists in the anti slavery movement. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June 14, 1811. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a Calvinist preacher, and her mother, Roxana Foote, died when she was four. When Stowe was 25 years old, she married Calvin Ellis Stowe, who was also against slavery and a well known minister. Stowe s sister, Isabella Beecher Hooker, was an advocate for women s rights. Another of her sisters, Catherine, founded a school to offer education for young women. Uncle Tom s Cabin is about the life of Tom, an african slave, who was sold to a trader because of the debt owed by his master. He was being moved to the South where he would begin his life like he has never done. Slavery has always been a sorrowful topic, so when we were given the years between 1492 to 1870, it came to mind right away. Google gave a handful of books to read, but only this mysterious title stroke curiosity. The book started off with a conversation between two men, Mr. Shelby, a farmer, and Mr. Haley, who is a trader. They were discussing the conduct of their slaves. Mr. Shelby had a plethora of positive things to say about his slaves because he was a very nice person. Mr. Haley on the other hand, was very negative and did not trust any slave. It outlines its historical development and analyses its usefulness and how it can be applied to key decisions. The Balanced Scorecard The balanced scorecard is a performance management tool that assists in the management of an organisation s business strategy using traditional financial measurements combined with non financial information (Candle 2008). By collecting and analysing the information found, organisations can keep track of their management system to create opportunities and improve on any shortcomings, making their business more efficient and effective. Historical Development of the Balanced Scorecard The balanced scorecard was brought into attention by Robert Kaplan and David Norton (Kaplan and Norton 1992). In 1990, the Naplan Norton institute sponsored a one year study, Measuring Performance in the Organization of the Future (Robertson 2005). This was organised due to concerns that quantitative financial tools were becoming less useful. David Norton was the study leader whilst Robert Kaplan was the academic consultant. Many companies, from varying industries, took part in this study in an effort to establish a more effective performance strategy tool. This led to the creation of the balanced scorecard and a Harvard Business Review article on the balanced scorecard in 1992 by Kaplan and Norton (Cobbold and Lawrie 2002). In 1996, a book was published by Kaplan and Norton where a modified version, the second generation, of the scorecard was introduced as it did not give a more distinct definition of what a balanced scorecard was and how to apply it (Ahmadgourabi, Efteghar and Poureisa 2013). Using strategy maps, cause effect chains were added to provide more contextual reasoning behind decisions to make it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Cost of Living Measuring the Cost of Living Overview: Last time we discussed the most important measure of economic well being real, per capita GDP. Further, if we want to see how our economic well being is changing over time, we can calculate how real GDP is changing in percentage terms (for example, real GDP grew 4% last quarter). Now, we turn our attention to another important measure of the economy. We want to measure how the cost of living changes over time. The main intuition here is that, over time, peoples incomes and the prices of goods and services increase. 30 years ago an ice cream sundae cost $1 and a typical economics professor earned $35,000. Imagine a shopping cart you fill it up with items that a typical consumer will purchase. Step 2: Find the prices: Now that we have our basket, we can track prices on the items in the cart and see how much it all costs. Step 3: Compute the cost of the basket: Let s determine the cost of the basket from year to year Step 4: Choose a base year, and compute the index: Pick a year to serve as a benchmark a comparison basket cost for all other years. We then can use the cost in benchmark year (called a base year ) relative to the cost of the cart in the year we are interested in to calculate a cost if living index. Step 5: Compute the inflation rate: This is easy: just calculate how the index changes from year to year in percentage terms. To see these steps in action, consider the following example (from the textbook):

However, before, he didn t feel any of these. Such emotions can make someone depressed, which is exactly what Charlie was. Daniel Keyes illustrates this when Charlie says It is hard to throw away thoughts of suicide. (page 302) This shows just how serious Charlie s condition really was at the end of the story. For these reasons, Charlie is more aware of the things that he does wrong after the surgery. To continue, Charlie has much less hope after the operation. Once Charlie realizes that his intelligence is likely to decrease juristically, he starts to lose hope in ever staying as smart as he used to be. In the beginning, he was always so hopeful and trusting of everyone around him and himself. Daniel Keyes describes this idea when Charlie says Their going to use me! • 34. Effect Of The On A Sport Event Firstly, he depicts the multiplier used by each of the impact studies. A multiplier is a coefficient, which displays the multiplier effect on the economy when visitors spend money on a sport event. The money spent in the host community will launch a ripple effect, thus converting the direct impact of the spending into indirect and induced impacts on the economy. A higher multiplier suggests, that more of the initial injection of money into the economy stays within without leaking out of the local economy. Consequently a higher multiplier leads to a higher economic impact (Crompton 1995). An example of how the multiplier works is shown in Figure 2. The figure assumes that visitors spend $10.000 due to the sport franchise, at four different establishments. The hotel serves as an example for how these establishments further distribute the initial injection of money. The money that stays within the local economy is spent in the same five ways over and over as successive rounds of spending occur (Crompton 1995). 10 Figure 2: How the multiplier concept operates (Source: (Crompton 1995)) Authors of a community guide to tourism development cited by Crompton (1995) suggest that 90% to 95% of U.S. county income multipliers lie between 1.4 and 1.8. Several of Crompton s found misapplications alter the multiplier directly, such as using the sales instead of the income multiplier or using the incremental rather than the normal approach to derive the coefficient of the multiplier. • 35. The Influence Of Lin Vs. Lin On Chinese Foreign Relations In the 1839 Chinese foreign relations was based on what was good for China. If they were making profits, everything was peachy. But if more harm was being done than good, the Chinese as Lin Zexu says, would remove it for the world. China was very strict on Europeans living in China. Emperor Qian only allowed Europeans that he thought in service of the dynasty to stay, and they must obey strict rules. Europeans had to adopt Chinese dress, were forced to stay in their designated precincts , and were never allowed to return to or communicate with their home country. It was the respect of these rules by the British rulers, according to Lin that China had welcomed so hospitably trade with England for last two hundred years. But recently Lin describes a change in the English trade. He begins to describe this group as barbarians that are interested only in profit, regardless of who they hurt. they were taking advantage of the Chinese people, something the Chinese government saw as a huge harm that they needed to remove. Chinese are about profits without harm, while the British are not able to see past the money.
