Theories Of Bering Strait Theory
The bering strait theory is named after Vitus Bering. It is also known as the land bridge theory as
well, the theory takes places during the ice age it is said that the waters of the Bering straits were
frozen over and match up, making sea levels lower which allowed the natives of North America to
cross over from Asiavia Siberia. They did not walk over ice they made a route. This is the origin
of our fellow native people. Many believe that the first people to populate the Americas migrated
across the Bering Land Bridge while tracking large game animal herds. Becoming the roots of the
bering straittheory. It s model of how migration started. Even today this shows us how many have
crossed america looking for something more alongside a greater quality of life. The foundation of
the bering strait theory, The roots of bering strait theory goes back to 1587 started with the

The Island s Slave, Savage And Son Of A Witch
The island s slave, savage and son of a witch, Caliban is a masterpiece of Shakespeare. The vague
descriptions of Caliban allow us to interpret the complex character of Caliban in many different
ways. At the time when Shakespeare wrote this, native people from the outer world fascinated the
Shakespearean audience. Therefore the way we consider Caliban, will differ from the way
Shakespearean audiences viewed him. Shakespeare has made Caliban a symbol of colonialism,
as during those times Europe was beginning to explore and colonize America the New World.
Throughout the play our feelings towards Caliban change. At the start we get introduced to
Caliban by Prospero s description of him Hag born, and dull thing. Prospero manipulates our
views of Caliban at the start, by describing him, giving us an impression of someone ugly and evil,
as Caliban. We also learn that he is a slave, whose master is Propspero. This is shown by Whom
now I keep in service.
Shakespeare presents Caliban to the audience as a brutal monster. This is shown by
Prospero way of speaking towards Caliban, thou most lying slave and hag seed. By saying thou
most lying slave, Caliban is described as a slave and dishonest. Hag seed, meaning son of a witch
will make him seem like an animal, not a human. At that time, Elizabethan audiences will abhor
Caliaban, as he was a son of a witch. Therefore having a poor first impression of Caliban. All of
these descriptions dehumanises Caliban, hurting him. A

African American Folk Music Research Paper
HOW AFRICAN AMERICAN SEGREGATION INFLUENCED SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN
FOLK MUSIC DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION
John Hilderbrand
History 255: Race, Rock and Roll, and American History
April 29, 2016
Introduction Folk music was shaped and influenced by segregation during the Great Depression
between blacks and whites, which led to divergent forms of African American folk music in
isolated towns where black music could evolve from its African origins. Even before the Great
Depression, earlier African Americanmusic styles have influenced the folk music of southern
Appalachia. The banjo is one of the most important musical instruments playing in Appalachia folk
music, and it is a little known fact that this instrument was introduced by African Americans, as
well as African work songs and chants to this region.1 This paper will address how segregation
between blacks and whites have influenced folk music, if at all, and if racial tensions ... Show more

Some African Americans families settled in small towns which became predominantly black and
poor. This occurred throughout Appalachia, where blacks and whites tended to live in separate
towns. When black folk bands traveled to different festivals, they interacted with white folk
artists and exchanged musical methods weather they knew it or not. Some of the songs from
African American folk artist were adopted by white banjo players as early as 1830s such as Dan
Emmett and Billy Whitlock, who were part of a traveling minstrel show in Virginia according to
historian George Gibson7. George suggests that the blending of white and black music took place
well before the minstrel performers during the 1840s7. Which would allow for white folk artists to
use their influence popularizing song material that would have not gained much notice if it was
kept within the confines of the black folklore and

Commentary On Fear And Loathing By Hunter S. Thompson
Unit 5 Written Assignment
The article I read was called Fear and Loathing by Hunter S. Thompson. It was his response on
about the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 here in America. He explains how this
incident changed us. As Hunter S. Thompson said, We are At War now with somebody and we will
stay at war with that mysterious enemy for the rest of our lives. (Thompson, 2001, para. 6). His
main focus was that the Americans will always be at war because of this.
Americans still don t know who the actual enemy was, all they knew at the time was that someone
from the other side of the world started this. The source I chose which relates to the article I read
was called Silence to descend on America as 911 victims remembered.

Comparison of an Evil mastermind in Shakespeare’s Othello...
Iago is one of the most renowned villains of pre modern literature, as first introduced in
Shakespeare s Othello. His deceiving personality and complex nature is painted such that readers
are amazed by his ingenious schemes. At the beginning of Shakespeare s Othello, Iago is
represented as trustworthy and honest, but readers soon realize that he is the opposite of what he
seems. Even though Iagos personality and thoughts are revealed less in MacDonald s Goodnight
Desdemona(Good Morning Juliet), he carries on the same immoral legacy as in Othello. Throughout
the plays, he turns his friends against one another who look to him for guidance and support. Iago
thirsts to upgrade this status in society which causes him to take advantage of... Show more content

Iago explains to Rodrigo that he does not serve Othello because it is it duty, he does so because
he feels he can exploit and take advantage of him. Iago believes that people who are what they
seem are foolish and says that I am not what I am , which implies that he is also playing a
deceitful game with Rodrigo. Desdemona in MacDonald s Goodnight Desdemona (Good
Morning Juliet) is interpreted as a capable, independent, and even violent character who marries
Othello because of her passion for combat and conquest. Desdemona s character goes beyond the
limits of breaking feminine stereotypes and is seen as a savage who hungers violence. As a
result of her rage filled personality, Desdemona is gullible and easily irritated by others. She
looks for the evil in others and searches for conflict. In this Desdemona, Logos reigns, she
exhibits primarily characteristics that we have designated as masculine : love of horror and a
desire for blood, violence, and vengeance (Snyder 49). Desdemona easily becomes jealous of
others, which Iago takes advantage of. The character of Desdemona is seen to break the stereotype
of powerless women and goes to an extreme of representing Desdemona as a violent female who is
easily manipulated. The

Marlboro Man Persuasive Speech
I am humbled and honored to be a member of the Lumbee Tribe, the largest tribe east of the
Mississippi River. Brooke Medicine Eagle once said, Being Indian is an attitude, a state of mind, a
way of being in harmony with all things and all beings. It is allowing the heart to be the distributor
of energy on this planet; to allow feelings and sensitivities to determine where energy goes;
bringing aliveness up from the Earthand from the Sky, putting it in and giving it out from the

I be the change that I wish to see in the world? While I may not be in Congress, however, to be

health needs of the Lumbee people can be improved. In my experience volunteering at the
Lumbee health clinic and working in the hospital as a nurse, I noticed that the Lumbee people

health insurance. In addition, you had the Marlboro Man poisoning and destroying their health. I

SPA Essay
Ajax can be used to develop SPA, but it has some issues with it: 1.Complexity: Execution in any
SPA requires DOM structure to be modified again and again asynchronously in an HTML view.
Controller is responsible for performing such asynchronous operations and as the application
grows large, controller itself becomes complex. The complexity is also increased as developers
tries to add more features to existing application. So, for any changes in the view would also
require changes in controller as well which increases complexity. 2.Debugging: Any DOM
manipulations in the controller are also dependent on events in any HTML view. There is tight
coupling between view and controller which can makes it hard to test and debug any application....

It can also capture parameters passed in URI to be assigned to controller in use. The controller
can thus read the information from URI and make routing decisions accordingly. 4.Directives
Directives have the ability to add new functionalities to the existing DOM. AngularJS has many
built in directives such as ngApp, ngController, ngBind etc. These directives have their own
functionalities in the AngularJS application. Developers can also create their own directives to
add new reusable components. Benefits of SPA: 1.Better User Experience: As Single Page
Applications (SPA) has single page only and part of the web page is refreshed dynamically with
minimum response time, SPA offers better user experience to users. Unlike In traditional
applications whole web page is reloaded completely which is sometimes unnecessary and may even
not feasible on slow network connections. 2.Compatibility: SPA can be easily deployed on other
platforms such as mobile, Tablet or Desktop. Developer can reuse the same piece of code for web
version and mobile application also. 3.Easy deployment and version control: Deployment in
production server is very easy in case of SPA as there are separate client and server logic. One can
easily deploy at client part as only 3 files are typically needed: a single page(.html), a CSS bundle,
and a JavaScript bundle. Rollback to previous version is also very easy in case of

The United States Military Bases
For roughly 1% of the United States population, the past 10 years have been an ever changing
experience serving across the world. On September 11, 2001, the United States was attacked by a
terrorist organization residing in Afghanistan. The United States Armed forces were called upon to
fight a war against terrorism. In May 2003, this conflict extended to Iraq, which was acting as a
safe zone for many of the world s terrorists. Since that time, more than 70,000 contractors and sub
contractors have been hired by the Department of the Defense, in order to assist the United States
militaryin their mission against terrorism. These individuals known as the TCN s or third country
nationals, take part in everything from base security to cooking and laundry. However, since these
individuals are not United States citizens and the government has turned its back to them. Personal
knowledge, department of defense reports, and official law reviews contain a wide variety of
information that give a look inside what has been happening on the United States military bases.
Allegations of human trafficking, sexual assault, and indentured servitude are all common issues
these TCN s have endured.
In 2001, the Pentagon began taking in contract offers from companies around the United States.
Private contracting firms such as KBR Inc. or Prime Project International began receiving over 15
billion dollars a year. Foreign conflicts can be very profitable for large businesses that invest time

Divinity Of Jesus Research Paper
In this section we will explore the different proposals to the issue of the humanity and divinity of
Jesus (the horizontal axis), which was later classified as heresies, and the orthodox positions
defined by the Council of Nicea convened to settle this issue (refer to Lesson 5 for discussion on
Docetism).
1.1 Arianism: Glorious Human Nature; God like Nature
Arius of Alexandria (ca. 250 336) believed God is absolutely transcendent, therefore He could not
be involved in His creation to the limitation of a body. Thus Jesus could not be fully divine. He
further taught that an earthly father precedes his son, so the Heavenly Father preceded Jesus, thus
Jesus had a beginning and is not eternal in existence. Jesus is not of the same substance as ... Show

310 390) protested against the idea of a man joined with God. He said this results in two sons: the
Son of God and the Son of Mary. In Apollinarius understanding the flesh is not a separate complete
living entity; unlike other humans who depend on the human soul for movement and action, Jesus
body depended on the divine logos for movement and action. Thus, Jesus is not completely human
because he does not have a human soul, spirit, or mind (Dorman 2001: 157).
In Apollinarius understanding Jesus is more divine than human. The humanity of Jesus is
absorbed into His divinity. There are two implications arising from Apollinarius s fusion of the
Word and flesh. First, he regarded Jesus flesh as being glorified. It is now divine flesh or the flesh
of God. Second, since Jesus flesh cannot be separated from the Word, He becomes a proper object
of worship.
What are the objections to Apollinarius views? First, it was a docetic perspective: Jesus was not
really a man but only appeared to be such. Second, because the psychological aspect of the human
nature was missing, Jesus was not human. Third, if Jesus did not assume full humanity, His
redemptive work was undermined. How could a divine will s resistance to sin achieve our
salvation from sin? Jesus had to be fully human with a human will and human limitations to save us

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Should Be Banned Essay
The Perks of Being a Banned Book
The award winning coming of age novel to film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, has sparked
controversy with parents across school districts nationwide since its publishing in 1999. Many
students read the book for English class, as a choice read, as a part of a school project or

Analysis Of Andy Goldsworthy s Piece Ice Spiral
Thinking about a tree, one might think about the leaves and how they could symbolize balance,
growth, and harmony. Or one might think about how a tree represents nature itself by
symbolizing such attributes as strength, stability, diversity and withstanding the greatest of
challenges to survive. Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer and
environmentalist who produces site specific land art which embody these characteristics and
represent nature as a whole. Goldsworthy s process is to be as involved in nature as he possibly
can and to produce sculptures to draw out the character of the environment. He seeks to draw
emphasis to the beauty and exquisiteness of nature while also displaying the stages of life nature
goes through; it grows, stays and decays as an integral part of the circle of life. Goldsworthy s
piece Ice Spiral: Tree Soul, exemplifies these distinctive elements and displays his unique
technique in a way that captures the essence of nature. When one first looks upon the photograph
of Tree Soul, it almost looks unreal or that the ice spiral surrounding the tree was digitally added to
the image of the tree. The spiral ice sculptureis perfectly molded to wrap around the tree and opens
the eyes of the audience in sensing the beauty and multidimensional details of the natural world.
When creating his art pieces, Goldsworthy uses all materials of the natural world such as twigs,
flowers, snow, stone, leaves and ice. He only uses natural materials found

Fight for New Commander
Why would someone choose a Russian kid to be the head of the navy junior reserve officers

ceremony, where new commander was going to be named. Battalion commander is a position of
outmost importance in the unit. He is responsible for the entire battaliontwo companies, four
departments, seven teams, and one hundred fifty people overall. It is definitely a job that requires
great trust from your peers and senior naval science instructor. Unfortunately trust is something I

past. When I just came to the unit, people ignored me. My first year was probably the toughest

Security Vs Cold War
In terms of national security and intelligence work the Cold War is truly over. This does not
mean the United States is not currently involved in situations that are similar. During the Cold
War the U.S was involved in political hostility with a major state, the Soviet Union. The Cold War
was fought on a number of different battlefields though proxy wars between major states. The
proxy wars involved direct military actions by one side while the other side funded the enemy. We
can see an example of this type of conflict in the Vietnam War. These conflicts also involved a
much larger footprint than we currently see in examples today. The Cold Warutilized different states
that had similar political mindsets, usually communismor democracy. Communist backed political
parties continually sided with other communist states. During the Cuban missile crisis we saw the
communist led Cuba allowed their tactical position against the U.S. available to the Soviet Union.
Today we have not seen to that degree a viable threat to the U.S. homeland.

Essay On Finding Nemo
When a clown fish is mentioned, the majority of the people automatically think of Disney Pixar
s movie, Finding Nemo. This assumption is not correct though. The fish that are actually
depicted in this movie are a species called false anemone fish. Although this movie gives an
accurate view into the life of a false clown fish, and its everyday adventures, there is slight
differences in the false anemone fish and a true anemone fish, or simply, clown fish. There are
small differences in their shape and their habitat. But there still is so much more to this fish than
the simple lives of Marlin and Nemo, the main characters in the animated film. The scientific name
of this fish is Amphiprion ocellaris and is also called an anemone fish because of its symbiotic
associations with sea anemones. The clown fish is a member of the Animal Kingdom and is

Miss Dior Advertising In Advertising
For many people in the world to see an advertisement and move past it because they find them
rather annoying has become the normalcy of today s society. However, if people actually paid
attention to those advertisements the readers would find that they think some of the ads should not
have been allowed. An ad for Miss Dior perfumewas presented in a late issue of Vogue with a
model who looks to be about twenty four years old. The model has shoulder length blonde hair,
a clear skin tone, and a facial expression that could be considered provocative. The model is
naked and only covered by a dress that she holds up which still only covers a portion of her top,
middle section, and private area. Despite this dress, her complete right leg, thigh, arm, neck, and
shoulders are revealed. In the foreground is a Miss Dior perfume bottle with the words Miss
Dior and you, what would you do for love? . In Jean Kilbourne s Killing Us Softly 4, she states
that advertisements often send certain messages about women. Kilbourne claims that unrealistic
ideas of women are often proposed within ads, such as symbolizing women as objects and not
people, or even the idea that if you are not beautiful, then you are nothing. In the Dior
advertisement, a few of its aspects uphold statements made by Jean Kilbourne such as sexualizing
models to sell a product, emphasizing the idea of looking young and attractive, and placing models
in vulnerable positions.

Deviance and Social Control
Deviance and Social Control Final Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for
SOCL 101 Sociology By Social control is techniques and strategies used for preventing deviant
human behavior in any society. All levels of society such as family, school, bureaucratic and
government has some form of social control. Examples of family social control include obeying

Deviant behavior is socially constructed with the people in power defining what is expectable
and what is deviant. An example of deviance here in the United States can be found in our
freedom of religion. Our society was created with a strong Christian background; attending
church on Sundays is widely accepted and practiced among many of our citizens. Conversely,
state that you re a satanic worshiper and you will most definitely carry a social stigma. There are
other forms of deviant behavior that people can unwillingly acquire through a social stigma.
Being overweight can carry a stigma within our society because overweight people are assumed
to be weak in character. Being grossly unattractive can also carry an unwanted social stigma.
Social deviance is subject to different social interpretations and varies throughout different
cultures. What is considered deviant in one culture may be considered normal in another. Dog
fighting is an example of contrasting social deviance between the USA and Afghanistan. Getting
caught dog fighting in the United States and you will be thrown in jail and carry a social stigma
for the rest of your life. The professional footballer Michael Vick is an example of this negative
stigma. Conversely, dog fighting in Afghanistan is widely accepted and practiced every Friday

Relevant to these questions we hypothesis that despite the multitude of efforts that are resulting in

achieving those goals but many don t think it s enough or realistically sustainable for the long

products, and it s little progress on their sustainability index (Gunther, M., 2011). One of Wal

renewable energy to power their stores. An article published in 2011 stated that Walmart was
powered by only 2% of renewable energy and the ILSR came out with a report stating less than
2% of renewable energy powers Walmart stores. People were not impressed with this minimal
progress and pointed out that other companies like Starbucks and Kohls use more renewable
energy than Walmart. It was also pointed out that Wal mart is a huge multinational corporation
and that a process like this will take time, especially if they re trying to avoid raising their costs,
which in turn would not benefit the customers. However, in 2013 it was reported that Wal Mart s
10,800 stores are powered by 21% of renewable energy, which is a decent amount of growth from

The Evolution Of The Bible
The evolution of the Bible begins one hundred and fifty years after Jesus birth with Marcion of
Pontus, a Christian theologian and heretic. He was a faithful Christian but was dissatisfied with the
Jewish scripture because he believed that the God in the Old Testament was too harsh and
legalistic. The God in the Hebrew Biblewas not the same God depicted by Jesuswas the God that he
believed in. Without the churches consent, Marcion removed all traces of the Hebrew text (the Old
Testament) from his bible. Of course, at the time, people did not take well to his alteration but he
was a catalyst for the evolution of the Christian bible we know today. Many individuals wanted
to create a solid standing bible that could represent their faith but it was difficult to decide
because of hundreds of manuscripts in circulation around 150 A.D. Not until a century later
would an official book be created. Constantine emerged triumphant in a series of civil wars
against the emperors Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of both west and east. At one
of the battles, legend has it that he had a vision of a cross and that Jesus spoke to him saying In
my name, conquer . His victory and vision is said to be the leading cause for his passion of the
Christian faith. At the time, Rome held many different religious beliefs, mostly Christian subsets.
Because there wasn t one unified religion, Constantine made it his mission to bring his people
together. Because there was so much diversity,

Then, the parent will get mad at the kid because he/she wants the candy. However, It prevents the

Women In The Laboratory
Explore the presentation of female voices in Shakespeare s Macbeth, Duffy s Medusa and

Throughout history women have been expected to obey and serve men , especially their husbands.
These ideas have been developed in society because of the powerful influence of religious doctrine.
As a consequence, females have been subject to very narrow gender definitions. However, as
presented in poems Havisham, Medusa and The Laboratory and the play Macbeth, certain women
wish not to adhere to these idealised views. In fact, all the women in these texts display some anti
female traits. In this essay, I wish to explore how Shakespeare, Duffy and Browning all give these

Quotes like hissed and spat on my scalp expose the snake like thoughts Medusa holds. The use
of sibilance also adds aggression to what s said by Medusa as saying the words make you spit.
To add, the description of Medusa s mouth being Yellow fanged and foul shows us how unclean
medusa is and the how her teeth are Fanged implement animalistic characteristics and aggression
into Medusa herself as words like fanged and foul are usually associated with animals
specifically lions and snakes meaning that she can cause a lot of harm with her mouth. The idea
of foul ness comes from the witches during act 1 scene 1 when they say fair is foul, and foul is
fair. The idea of something bad being good creates the idea that doing the wrong thing is the

Aviation is something that has changed our lives in every way and it will still continue that
way. It all started with a balloon in the 1800 s. Then came the gliders but they were mainly just
wings that you glide on. That s when the Wright brothers thought of an idea that changed history.
North Carolina the Wright brothers flew their first full size glider (Berliner 77). They attached a

That s also gonna drop and crash. That s why it s got to be even. Airplane s are built so that their

for lift is also changed based on how much weight a particular flight packs. Most people think
that airplane s are flying just by jets but it s actually flying by 4 forces. You need lift to get off

The Legalization Of Marijuana And Marijuana Essay
Marijuana or Cannabis is one of the bused drugs in America and the rest of the world. Interesting
accumulating evidence show that the significant negative impact of this drug outweighs the
positive effects. However, the medical benefits of the drug seem on the process of chemical
compounds as compared to the drug itself. Medical debates show that chemical compound in
marijuana are the problem as compared to the plant. The said chemical compound affects the
mental and physical health of the persons abusing this drug. There have been traditional efforts to
control the use of marijuana through legislation laws, (Crick, Haase, Bewley Taylor, 2013).
However, in the recent past the efforts and the laws are being lifted to relax the implementation of
the same legislations and the population is responding fast in accepting the legalization of the use

Restaurant And Thanksgiving Restaurant
During the Thanksgiving season the Hospitality industry is in the middle of one of their busiest
times of the year. This is the truest for restaurants and hotels, as many people gather around with
family and go out to dinner more often, or when family flies into town and stays in a hotel. This
busy time of year shows many of the same patterns annually, as well as cause some problems along
the way.
Every year the restaurant industry experiences many more and larger groups of people around the
Thanksgiving holiday. These larger groups make management a little more difficult as
traditionally, food takes a little longer, service is more rushed, and everyone including
employees and customers are a little on edge. However, people are escaping the stress of
Thanksgiving dinner by letting the restaurants do all the work. A study showed that in 2011 six
percent of those surveyed said they planned to eat out for Thanksgiving. Of the people who eat
Thanksgiving at home in 2017, 9 percent said they would pick up parts of their meals, and four
percent said they d buy a complete meal. That means nearly one in four diners are not going to do

Death And The Maiden Short Story
Don t you know who I am? Intro Hook Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce
Carol Oates, was originally entitled Death and the Maiden. In this short story, Oates provides
internal events in the form of excitement and suspense. These internal events are also the climax.
Arnold Friend, the demonic adversary, causes Connie, the protagonist, the anguish which drives
the plot. Arnold Friend persuades Connie to cross the threshold into the adult world and lose
her innocence. Home life Friend first noticed Connie when she was at the diner, her parents did

boys, since she doesn t get any attention at home. This is what causes her to meet Arnold Friend.
Appearance One of the things about Arnold Friend that cause one to believe he is the Devil is
his appearance. From head to toe, his appearance is meant to be deceptive. He is roughly thirty
years old, and dresses like a teenager. Friend has black shaggy hair that looks like a wig, black thick

Romantic Comedies In The 1920 s
Romance is a genre which has been going since the 1890 s. Silent films were the starting point.
These very short films in black and white which involved two characters falling in love. They
would only last around 7 minutes. Film makers described love films being about desire and sex.
In the 1920 s to 50 s, romantic films began to portray more painful love. The story line would
involve two people who didn t get on. They would then fall in love more towards the end. Over
the years the romantic genre has been toyed with, trying to make films to suit a wider ranged
audience. This is how more sub genres of romantic films were gradually produced. They would
mix other genres in with the romantic genre so films had more variety and suited more people s
interests. Most romantic films are now of sub genres rather than just the plain romantic genre. Rom

One can agree that during the day, the beach can be a noisy place: music, kids, and talkative

people and feels more like your own oasis. You begin to hone in on the sounds: the rave music is
now more calming; it is maybe playing reggae or something else soothing. The seagulls seem to

Terrorism And Its Effects On Terrorism
Terrorism has continuously played a brutal role to frighten society across the world. There are
many nations that have faced brutal issues and continuously try to find a solution but to no avail,
terrorism still exists across the world. There are many questions that are still pending answers and
many governments are finding some relief with considerable assistance from anti terrorism
organizations (Fischer, 2002).
Terrorism can strike not just large cities, but in any community of any size. While no amount of
planning and mitigation can remove 100 percent of the risk from terrorism, hazard mitigation and
preparedness can help reduce the risk. Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or
property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation,
coercion, or ransom. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) categorizes terrorism in the U.S. as
one of two types (Watson, 2002):
1.Domestic Terrorism; terrorist activities that focus on facilities or populations without foreign
direction.
2.International Terrorism; terrorist activities that are foreign based and/or sponsored by
organizations or groups outside the U.S.
Victims can be anyone who died or injured in terrorist activities, they can belong to any country, be
of any religion, culture, state, class, color or diversified factor; though, little attention and analysis

limitless. Since you came to my bank and wasn t quite sure about applying for a credit card, and
also because I value you as a customer, I decided to write this letter hoping to change the way you
think about credit cards.
Did you know according to collegeparents.org , in 2009, over 84 percent of undergraduates had at
least own a credit card (collegeparents.org para4). And from that over 50 percent of students had
4 or more credit cards (Ghahremani para4). Even though as you mentioned, having a credit card
makes you purchase items that are not needed, more importantly it will help you build your
credit. And also when it comes to buying a car or even renting a car or a hotel, purchasing a
house, or even applying for a student loan, the first factor they look for is your credit history. Some
credit cards, such as cash back or rewards card even give you a little extra money for using them,
which is not bad to save some money without even noticing. On the down side, a lot of people who
get credit cards, end up spending more money than their income. But then once they realized they
have exceeded their limit, they blame on the credit card and not to themselves for purchasing
unwanted items. Without any further ado, let me tell you what a credit score is. Credit score is how
much the bank or any type of a

Corpus Analysis Literature
Findings
Conclusively, the results of this corpus analysis indicated that research writers practicing within the
discipline of the medical field do tend to include a slightly greater quantity of hedges in articles
pertaining to controversial subject matters, in comparison to articles which are less controversial in
nature. Specifically, there were approximately 20 hedges in the article Family Presence during
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and 32 hedges in the The offering of family presence during
resuscitation: a systematic review and meta analysis. In comparison, there was an approximate total
of 25 in the article Understanding Practice: Factors That Influence Physician Hand Hygiene
Compliance and 16 in A Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Interventions to Improve Hand
Hygiene Compliance of Nurses in the Hospital Setting. However, although this corpus analysis
originally aimed to quantify hedges, in order to compare the techniques and methods utilized by ...

Although the quantity of hedges was not particularly significant between the articles related to
family presence and hand hygiene, with approximate totals of 52 and 41 respectively, the hedges
included within the two articles served significantly different purposes. To that end, it was clear that
throughout the articles related to the controversial practice of family presence, claims were in fact
softened through the use of hedges. In comparison, a higher level of certainty encompassed the
claims made in the articles regarding hand hygiene, and hedges were utilized to primarily indicate

Human do not like to be bossed around and told what to do, many people even want to be the one

authority they hold over others. It is also possible that someone may wantmore power, because

Why Is Johnny Carson A Self-Described Loner
1. I believe that in the case of Johnny Carson s disposition, he scores low in neuroticism. There is
evidence to support this, because of the sentence, They knew Mr. Carson was intensely private,
a self described loner who shunned the spotlight when off the camera. I think a personality
psychologist would say that Carson scores high in the extraversion factor, because he displays
an appealing presence and friendliness towards his job as a comedian. This evidence is
displayed in the sentence, Still, Mr. Carson s scrubbed Midwestern presence was so appealing
that he succeeded in unifying a factious nation. Mr. Caron would score high in the openness
factor, because he could turn a bad situation into a laughable joke. He was very creative and had
a vivid imagination. This evidence is displayed in the sentence, He was also a master at milking
laughs out of bad jokes and bad audiences, using either a facial reaction or a prepared line about
how badly he was bombing that night. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carson would score low in the agreeableness factor. This is because, even though he was a

high in conscientiousness, because he was very organized and his performances were very well
executed. This evidence is present in the sentence, During his reign, Mr. Carson was the most

An Extension Of The Activities Essay
Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to
understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can
be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to
move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description,
observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014).
The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research
uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not
in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their
use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with
research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on
predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of
thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009). For the
purpose of this assignment we will look into the ideas, thinking and approaches of two qualitative
research designs; grounded theory and action research.
Grounded theory
Grounded theory is both a strategy of research and a style of analysis that uses the procedures to
develop a theory grounded in the data, using an inductive, theory discovery method, whose

Analyzing Themes In The Kidnap On Walnut Street
Before I began the fiction unit for this creative writing class, I did not think I would have an easy
time constructing flash fiction or short story pieces. Previously, I never had the opportunity to write
creative pieces for any of my English classes; therefore, the prospect of writing a full piece with a
beginning, middle, and end frightened me a little. However, I believe the work I presented in this
unit truly reflects my growth in understanding how to place words together to create thought
provoking themes about human relationships, trends that correspond to the themes, and writing
processes that utilize writing techniques. I think my growth occurred because of my interest in
writing about human relationships and experiences within flash fiction and short story pieces....

When I wrote each piece, I did not realize I utilized this theme until each piece was completed.
Additionally, I recognized that other themes and metaphors developed in each piece as well.
For example, in the work Cards and the Displaced Way of Life , the cards symbolized the
concept of loss and constant searching within the homeless family s life. Similarly, the
descriptions of Sheela in her home in The Kidnapping on Walnut Street symbolized the themes of
pain and suffering within the piece. I believe I was successful in developing each of the themes
because outside references gathered from my observations influenced some of my writing. For
example, in the work The Time Capsule for Life s Last Moments , I used observations from my
grandparents to influence how I wanted to write the piece. Correspondingly, I used a real life
investigation as an influence for The Kidnapping on Walnut Street . I think the themes of my works
supported each other and helped me realize and understand my

Denver Pacific Railroad Research Paper
In the 1800 s, Colorado was pretty much a gold mine for settlers traveling west. The city of
Denver was bypassed by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) through Cheyenne, Wyoming from
Omaha, Nebraska, 100 miles to the north. David Halliday Moffat, one of Denver s most
important financiers and industrialists, had a vision. Having built several rail lines for a few
railroads such as the Denver Pacific Railway (DP) and the Denver, South Park, and Pacific
Railway (DSP P), he wanted to connect Denver and Salt Lake City, Utah by rail. However,
David had a problem: the Rocky Mountains were in the way. By 1887, Moffat was elected
president of the Denver Rio Grande (D RG), which built a route west from Pueblo to Grand
Junction in western Colorado via Tennessee Pass. Beginning in 1902, David Moffat and his
associates established the Denver, Northwestern Pacific Railway (DNW P) to address the issue of
Denver having been bypassed by both the UP in Cheyenne and the D RG in Pueblo.... Show more

altitude, parts of which are still used today, such as the Little and Big Ten Curve. Following the
Front Range Foothills, the line snaked west just south of Boulder, near Eldorado Springs. To
reach the village of Tolland, 40 miles west of Denver, 33 tunnels were bored. However, the

Race, Culture, Income Level, Education, And Class
In every society there is stratification, which is basically a ranking system constructed upon features
involving gender, race, culture, income level, education, and class. Each of these factors fall under
the status of either Ascribed or Achieved. Ascribed status is something that people are born with
and is centered on characteristics that a person can t control like gender, race, and culture. Achieved
statusis earned or chosen and is based on characteristics that a person can control such as income
level, education, and class. When looking at Ascribed stratification, the characteristic that appears
to have the greatest effect on a person s status is race. When someone thinks of a wealthy, high
class American, an African American is not typically what pops into their head. This is because
African Americans are a minority, making up around 13% of America s population. African
Americans are also seen at a lesser status because of stereotypes. Labels like criminal, poor, and
unintelligent are put on African Americans which automatically downgrades them. On the other
hand, an example of an ascribed stratification that would automatically put someone at the top of
the totem pole in a society would be being born into royalty or a wealthy family because people do
not pick and control the family they are born into. Ascribed statuss also play a big role in India,
especially because this is where the caste system was created which was based on heredity. In these
caste systems

Therefore, the plague narrative also serves a function of demonstrating who Yahwehis to His own
people. Israel must also know Yahweh as we see in Exodus 10:2. Throughout the narrative, we
see many allusions to the Egyptian gods and the impotence of these gods before God of Israel.9
There are multiple gods in the Egyptian temple. As an example, in the first plague, the Nile
River was turned into blood. The river was an important source of fertility to the land of Egypt.
Thus, it was dedicated to many gods (Osiris, Hapi, Sepek etc.) of the Egyptians.10 By turning the
river into blood, it eloquently reveals the power of Yahweh and the inferiority of Egyptian gods.
For the Egyptians who looked to various gods associated with the Nile, this event would have
produced many questions for their faith. Even the magicians had to acknowledge in the third
plague that it is the finger of God as they could not replicate it (Exod. 8:19). As for the Israelites,
the plague narrative is a reminder of the mighty and awesome power of God who had chosen them
and kept His promise. A reminder that would help to strengthen their faith in Him.
Each plague brings deeper knowledge and understanding of Yahweh. They are not simply acts of
judgment, but something that God uses to reveal Himself. Because they are more than just
punishments, they fail to actually secure Israel s release each time. As signs , they are used to

Aristotle Soul Of Tragedy Analysis
For Aristotle, the unity of temporality guarantees the unity of the plot s action. The dramatic
action, being the mimesis of representation, demands a certain magnitude to expand the
temporality of the plot, a length which allows of the hero passing by a series of probable of
necessary stages from bad fortune to good, or from good to bad, may suffice as a limit for
magnitude of a story (Aristotle, 1450b45) Aristotle uses the subject of the Odyssey as an example
of a tragic plotwhich encompasses the coherent totality of unity of time and unity of action,
Homer, in writing an Odyssey, he did not make the poem cover all that ever befell his hero it
befell him (Aristotle, 1451a25). Plot is the soul of tragedythat forms meaning necessary to make
sense of human action for the spectacle (L3, Aristotle Tragedy). Thus, the spectator is able to
reason and make probable through the mimesis of action contain in the plots soul of tragedy.
Reversal, recognition, and suffering are elements that encompass the soul of tragedy the plot. The
dramatic plot, the soul of tragedy, is a, whole that that which has a beginning, middle, and end
(Aristotle, 1451a19). According to Aristotle, a good poet often stretched out beyond its capabilities,
and is thus obliged to twist the sequence of incident (Aristotle, 1451b37). With this, he believes that
the reversal is the change in fortune, described from one state of things within the play to its
opposite, and that too as we say, the

One s perception on the world and how one identifies themself, changes depending on the
collective identity of their peers. This is seen in such forms as political and religious beliefs, or
one s behavior. This is commented on multiple times by various characters during the book, as
well as being evidenced by the Narrator s actions and change in behavior over the duration of the
novel. The Narrator comments on this when he states; I confess after having spent almost my
whole life in their (the right wing patriots) company, I cannot help but sympathize with them.
(pg.36). Sonny also comments on this saying; What I learned, against my will, is that it s
impossible to live among a foreign people and not be changed by them (pg. UNDEFINED). Add
some more reasoning. The Narrator during his time taking refuge in america was no longer in
personal contact with any communist, and thus showed signs of being affected by the people
around him, somewhat losing his loyalties to the communists. The Narrator ultimately feels the bite
of this when he, against orders, joins in a patriot raid against the communists, and when caught,

  • 2. Theories Of Bering Strait Theory The bering strait theory is named after Vitus Bering. It is also known as the land bridge theory as well, the theory takes places during the ice age it is said that the waters of the Bering straits were frozen over and match up, making sea levels lower which allowed the natives of North America to cross over from Asiavia Siberia. They did not walk over ice they made a route. This is the origin of our fellow native people. Many believe that the first people to populate the Americas migrated across the Bering Land Bridge while tracking large game animal herds. Becoming the roots of the bering straittheory. It s model of how migration started. Even today this shows us how many have crossed america looking for something more alongside a greater quality of life. • 3. The Island s Slave, Savage And Son Of A Witch The island s slave, savage and son of a witch, Caliban is a masterpiece of Shakespeare. The vague descriptions of Caliban allow us to interpret the complex character of Caliban in many different ways. At the time when Shakespeare wrote this, native people from the outer world fascinated the Shakespearean audience. Therefore the way we consider Caliban, will differ from the way Shakespearean audiences viewed him. Shakespeare has made Caliban a symbol of colonialism, as during those times Europe was beginning to explore and colonize America the New World. Throughout the play our feelings towards Caliban change. At the start we get introduced to Caliban by Prospero s description of him Hag born, and dull thing. Prospero manipulates our views of Caliban at the start, by describing him, giving us an impression of someone ugly and evil, as Caliban. We also learn that he is a slave, whose master is Propspero. This is shown by Whom now I keep in service. Shakespeare presents Caliban to the audience as a brutal monster. This is shown by Prospero way of speaking towards Caliban, thou most lying slave and hag seed. By saying thou most lying slave, Caliban is described as a slave and dishonest. Hag seed, meaning son of a witch will make him seem like an animal, not a human. At that time, Elizabethan audiences will abhor Caliaban, as he was a son of a witch. Therefore having a poor first impression of Caliban. All of these descriptions dehumanises Caliban, hurting him. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. African American Folk Music Research Paper HOW AFRICAN AMERICAN SEGREGATION INFLUENCED SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN FOLK MUSIC DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION John Hilderbrand History 255: Race, Rock and Roll, and American History April 29, 2016 Introduction Folk music was shaped and influenced by segregation during the Great Depression between blacks and whites, which led to divergent forms of African American folk music in isolated towns where black music could evolve from its African origins. Even before the Great Depression, earlier African Americanmusic styles have influenced the folk music of southern Appalachia. The banjo is one of the most important musical instruments playing in Appalachia folk music, and it is a little known fact that this instrument was introduced by African Americans, as well as African work songs and chants to this region.1 This paper will address how segregation between blacks and whites have influenced folk music, if at all, and if racial tensions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some African Americans families settled in small towns which became predominantly black and poor. This occurred throughout Appalachia, where blacks and whites tended to live in separate towns. When black folk bands traveled to different festivals, they interacted with white folk artists and exchanged musical methods weather they knew it or not. Some of the songs from African American folk artist were adopted by white banjo players as early as 1830s such as Dan Emmett and Billy Whitlock, who were part of a traveling minstrel show in Virginia according to historian George Gibson7. George suggests that the blending of white and black music took place well before the minstrel performers during the 1840s7. Which would allow for white folk artists to use their influence popularizing song material that would have not gained much notice if it was kept within the confines of the black folklore and ... Thompson said, We are At War now with somebody and we will stay at war with that mysterious enemy for the rest of our lives. (Thompson, 2001, para. 6). His main focus was that the Americans will always be at war because of this. His deceiving personality and complex nature is painted such that readers are amazed by his ingenious schemes. At the beginning of Shakespeare s Othello, Iago is represented as trustworthy and honest, but readers soon realize that he is the opposite of what he seems. Even though Iagos personality and thoughts are revealed less in MacDonald s Goodnight Desdemona(Good Morning Juliet), he carries on the same immoral legacy as in Othello. Desdemona in MacDonald s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is interpreted as a capable, independent, and even violent character who marries Othello because of her passion for combat and conquest. Desdemona s character goes beyond the limits of breaking feminine stereotypes and is seen as a savage who hungers violence. As a result of her rage filled personality, Desdemona is gullible and easily irritated by others. She looks for the evil in others and searches for conflict. In this Desdemona, Logos reigns, she exhibits primarily characteristics that we have designated as masculine : love of horror and a desire for blood, violence, and vengeance (Snyder 49). Desdemona easily becomes jealous of others, which Iago takes advantage of. The character of Desdemona is seen to break the stereotype of powerless women and goes to an extreme of representing Desdemona as a violent female who is easily manipulated. The ... • 9. SPA Essay Ajax can be used to develop SPA, but it has some issues with it: 1.Complexity: Execution in any SPA requires DOM structure to be modified again and again asynchronously in an HTML view. Controller is responsible for performing such asynchronous operations and as the application grows large, controller itself becomes complex. The complexity is also increased as developers tries to add more features to existing application. So, for any changes in the view would also require changes in controller as well which increases complexity. 2.Debugging: Any DOM manipulations in the controller are also dependent on events in any HTML view. There is tight coupling between view and controller which can makes it hard to test and debug any application.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can also capture parameters passed in URI to be assigned to controller in use. The controller can thus read the information from URI and make routing decisions accordingly. 4.Directives Directives have the ability to add new functionalities to the existing DOM. AngularJS has many built in directives such as ngApp, ngController, ngBind etc. These directives have their own functionalities in the AngularJS application. Developers can also create their own directives to add new reusable components. Benefits of SPA: 1.Better User Experience: As Single Page Applications (SPA) has single page only and part of the web page is refreshed dynamically with minimum response time, SPA offers better user experience to users. Unlike In traditional applications whole web page is reloaded completely which is sometimes unnecessary and may even not feasible on slow network connections. 2.Compatibility: SPA can be easily deployed on other platforms such as mobile, Tablet or Desktop. Developer can reuse the same piece of code for web version and mobile application also. 3.Easy deployment and version control: Deployment in production server is very easy in case of SPA as there are separate client and server logic. One can easily deploy at client part as only 3 files are typically needed: a single page(.html), a CSS bundle, and a JavaScript bundle. Rollback to previous version is also very easy in case of ... On September 11, 2001, the United States was attacked by a terrorist organization residing in Afghanistan. The United States Armed forces were called upon to fight a war against terrorism. In May 2003, this conflict extended to Iraq, which was acting as a safe zone for many of the world s terrorists. Since that time, more than 70,000 contractors and sub contractors have been hired by the Department of the Defense, in order to assist the United States militaryin their mission against terrorism. Thus, Jesus is not completely human because he does not have a human soul, spirit, or mind (Dorman 2001: 157). In Apollinarius understanding Jesus is more divine than human. The humanity of Jesus is absorbed into His divinity. There are two implications arising from Apollinarius s fusion of the Word and flesh. First, he regarded Jesus flesh as being glorified. It is now divine flesh or the flesh of God. Second, since Jesus flesh cannot be separated from the Word, He becomes a proper object of worship. What are the objections to Apollinarius views? First, it was a docetic perspective: Jesus was not really a man but only appeared to be such. Second, because the psychological aspect of the human nature was missing, Jesus was not human. Third, if Jesus did not assume full humanity, His redemptive work was undermined. How could a divine will s resistance to sin achieve our salvation from sin? Or one might think about how a tree represents nature itself by symbolizing such attributes as strength, stability, diversity and withstanding the greatest of challenges to survive. Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who produces site specific land art which embody these characteristics and represent nature as a whole. Goldsworthy s process is to be as involved in nature as he possibly can and to produce sculptures to draw out the character of the environment. He seeks to draw emphasis to the beauty and exquisiteness of nature while also displaying the stages of life nature goes through; it grows, stays and decays as an integral part of the circle of life. Goldsworthy s piece Ice Spiral: Tree Soul, exemplifies these distinctive elements and displays his unique technique in a way that captures the essence of nature. When one first looks upon the photograph of Tree Soul, it almost looks unreal or that the ice spiral surrounding the tree was digitally added to the image of the tree. The spiral ice sculptureis perfectly molded to wrap around the tree and opens the eyes of the audience in sensing the beauty and multidimensional details of the natural world. This does not mean the United States is not currently involved in situations that are similar. During the Cold War the U.S was involved in political hostility with a major state, the Soviet Union. The Cold War was fought on a number of different battlefields though proxy wars between major states. The proxy wars involved direct military actions by one side while the other side funded the enemy. We can see an example of this type of conflict in the Vietnam War. These conflicts also involved a much larger footprint than we currently see in examples today. The Cold Warutilized different states that had similar political mindsets, usually communismor democracy. Communist backed political parties continually sided with other communist states. During the Cuban missile crisis we saw the communist led Cuba allowed their tactical position against the U.S. available to the Soviet Union. Today we have not seen to that degree a viable threat to the U.S. homeland. National security was the same during the Cold War as it is today. • 18. Essay On Finding Nemo When a clown fish is mentioned, the majority of the people automatically think of Disney Pixar s movie, Finding Nemo. This assumption is not correct though. The fish that are actually depicted in this movie are a species called false anemone fish. Although this movie gives an accurate view into the life of a false clown fish, and its everyday adventures, there is slight differences in the false anemone fish and a true anemone fish, or simply, clown fish. There are small differences in their shape and their habitat. But there still is so much more to this fish than the simple lives of Marlin and Nemo, the main characters in the animated film. The scientific name of this fish is Amphiprion ocellaris and is also called an anemone fish because of its symbiotic associations with sea anemones. The clown fish is a member of the Animal Kingdom and is classified as an Actinopterygii and part of the Pomacentridae family and the Amphiprionanae subfamily. This sensation is reinforced by the position in which Jesus sits. His body has a triangular form, and all the apostles are close to him but not in his space. The subjects are placed in symmetrical balance in which the viewers see two groups divided by Jesus who is the subject to be the focal point. • 37. Terrorism And Its Effects On Terrorism Terrorism has continuously played a brutal role to frighten society across the world. There are many nations that have faced brutal issues and continuously try to find a solution but to no avail, terrorism still exists across the world. There are many questions that are still pending answers and many governments are finding some relief with considerable assistance from anti terrorism organizations (Fischer, 2002). Terrorism can strike not just large cities, but in any community of any size. While no amount of planning and mitigation can remove 100 percent of the risk from terrorism, hazard mitigation and preparedness can help reduce the risk. Terrorism is the use of force or violence against persons or property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation, coercion, or ransom. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) categorizes terrorism in the U.S. as one of two types (Watson, 2002): 1.Domestic Terrorism; terrorist activities that focus on facilities or populations without foreign direction. 2.International Terrorism; terrorist activities that are foreign based and/or sponsored by organizations or groups outside the U.S. Victims can be anyone who died or injured in terrorist activities, they can belong to any country, be of any religion, culture, state, class, color or diversified factor; though, little attention and analysis have focused on terrorism victims, including survivors. Since you came to my bank and wasn t quite sure about applying for a credit card, and also because I value you as a customer, I decided to write this letter hoping to change the way you think about credit cards. Did you know according to collegeparents.org , in 2009, over 84 percent of undergraduates had at least own a credit card (collegeparents.org para4). And from that over 50 percent of students had 4 or more credit cards (Ghahremani para4). Even though as you mentioned, having a credit card makes you purchase items that are not needed, more importantly it will help you build your credit. And also when it comes to buying a car or even renting a car or a hotel, purchasing a house, or even applying for a student loan, the first factor they look for is your credit history. Some credit cards, such as cash back or rewards card even give you a little extra money for using them, which is not bad to save some money without even noticing. On the down side, a lot of people who get credit cards, end up spending more money than their income. But then once they realized they have exceeded their limit, they blame on the credit card and not to themselves for purchasing unwanted items. Without any further ado, let me tell you what a credit score is. Credit score is how much the bank or any type of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. An Extension Of The Activities Essay Research is a systematic, precise and rigorous inquiry or investigation that allows people to understand the nature of a problem or idea (Grossoehme, 2014; Stringer, 2014). All research can be visualised as an extension of the activities we engage in day by day, which requires one to move past the day to day understandings and engage in a more precise and rigorous description, observation or explanation of the problem or idea (Stringer, 2014). The general distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is that quantitative research uses empirical data in the form of numbers, while qualitative research uses empirical data that is not in the form of numbers, usually words, but there is much more to the research designs than their use of numerical data or not (Stringer, 2014; Punch, 2009). Qualitative research is associated with research conducted in the social world, as opposed to quantitative research which focuses on predicting and controlling phenomena on the physical world, and both have their own way of thinking and approaches to research and collecting their data (Stringer, 2014, Punch, 2009). For the purpose of this assignment we will look into the ideas, thinking and approaches of two qualitative research designs; grounded theory and action research. However, I believe the work I presented in this unit truly reflects my growth in understanding how to place words together to create thought provoking themes about human relationships, trends that correspond to the themes, and writing processes that utilize writing techniques. Race, Culture, Income Level, Education, And Class In every society there is stratification, which is basically a ranking system constructed upon features involving gender, race, culture, income level, education, and class. Each of these factors fall under the status of either Ascribed or Achieved. Ascribed status is something that people are born with and is centered on characteristics that a person can t control like gender, race, and culture. Achieved statusis earned or chosen and is based on characteristics that a person can control such as income level, education, and class. When looking at Ascribed stratification, the characteristic that appears to have the greatest effect on a person s status is race. When someone thinks of a wealthy, high class American, an African American is not typically what pops into their head. This is because African Americans are a minority, making up around 13% of America s population. African Americans are also seen at a lesser status because of stereotypes. Labels like criminal, poor, and unintelligent are put on African Americans which automatically downgrades them. On the other hand, an example of an ascribed stratification that would automatically put someone at the top of the totem pole in a society would be being born into royalty or a wealthy family because people do not pick and control the family they are born into. Therefore, the plague narrative also serves a function of demonstrating who Yahwehis to His own people. Israel must also know Yahweh as we see in Exodus 10:2. Throughout the narrative, we see many allusions to the Egyptian gods and the impotence of these gods before God of Israel.9 There are multiple gods in the Egyptian temple. As an example, in the first plague, the Nile River was turned into blood. The river was an important source of fertility to the land of Egypt. Thus, it was dedicated to many gods (Osiris, Hapi, Sepek etc.) of the Egyptians.10 By turning the river into blood, it eloquently reveals the power of Yahweh and the inferiority of Egyptian gods. For the Egyptians who looked to various gods associated with the Nile, this event would have produced many questions for their faith. Even the magicians had to acknowledge in the third plague that it is the finger of God as they could not replicate it (Exod. 8:19). As for the Israelites, the plague narrative is a reminder of the mighty and awesome power of God who had chosen them and kept His promise. A reminder that would help to strengthen their faith in Him. Each plague brings deeper knowledge and understanding of Yahweh. They are not simply acts of judgment, but something that God uses to reveal Himself.
