World. Many of them claimed land:

Fort Orange
Sweden- Fort Christina
Russia- Alaska/California

n Smallpox, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough,
chicken pox, bubonic plague, scarlet fever and
influenza were the most common microbial
diseases exchanged
n Most disease was passed through trade. It was
not done intentionally
n Native Americans had not been exposed to the
diseases so they could not fight them off

n Central Mexico – 25 million
natives in 1519 to less than one
million in 1605
n Hispaniola – One million
natives in 1492 to 46,000 in
1512

n How were the expeditions of Ponce de Leon
and Coronado alike?
n They were alike because both explorers were exploring parts of
America to find gold, but never found it. Instead, they found
other landmarks like the Grand Canyon and the Mississippi.
n How did France claim lands around the
Mississippi River?
n In 1682, Robert La Salle claimed all the lands around the
Mississippi and its tributaries for France. They also built forts
and trading posts to protect their claims.
