4. IRISH AND AMERICA
-Irish were discriminated against for religion.
- Irish Catholics created Catholic parishes
- - parishes were tight knit and supportive.
- - Brought St. Patrick's Day and beer among
other things, to American culture.
5. GERMANS
- Germans brought more money when
immigrating.
- Majority moved to Pennsylvania and
Wisconsin to setup communities.
6. MORE GERMANS
-Germans immigrated
due to religion and
politics.
- Amish and
Mennonites ( called
the Pennsylvania
Dutch) were Germans
who immigrated for
religion.
7. NATIVISM
American Nativism: The idea that people
born in America,” Natives,” should have
their interests valued above those of the
new immigrants.
8. NATIVISTS AND DISCRIMINATION
- Nativists worried about jobs and Catholic influence
- -Worried about growing close-knit Irish community
- -Organized to create Order of Star Spangled banner
9. NATIVIST POLITICS
Know Nothings wanted to limit the amount of
immigrants allowed in and create restrictive
laws on naturalization. They had smear
campaigns against immigrants and often
would cause mass violence.
10. NATIVISM AND MASS POLITICS
Nativists eventually
formed the American
Party, which James W
Barker and former
president Millard
Filllmore would run
under. The party
would decline due to
unpopular policy.
Nativism continues
today with the issue of
Mexican immigration.
