This document outlines the roles and instructions for students participating in a triad debate on whether Napoleon betrayed the ideals of the French Revolution. Students are assigned the roles of affirmative, negative, or judge. The affirmative must argue that Napoleon did betray the revolution's ideals, while the negative argues he did not. Judges are to come up with 5 relevant questions for each side. The debate follows with speeches from each side and judges' questions, followed by summaries and the judges' decision.
10. Judge’s DecisionAffirmative and Negative Speakers: Take notes in the opposite column below when the other side is speaking. This is evidence of your participation when not talking yourself. At the conclusion of the debate write a summary of your position and the evidence you used to support your point of view. If you real opinion differs from the one you were asked to argue, discuss it in your reflection.
Judges: Write your questions (and any answers) in the space provided below for both sides. Then write your own decision on a separate sheet of paper. Once the debate is complete, write at least a paragraph and include at least three (3) specific pieces of evidence from the debate or answers to your questions you use to justify your decision.
Ideals of the French Revolution:
AFFIRMATIVE – reasons Napoleon betrayed the ideals of the revolutionNEGATIVE – reasons Napoleon did not betray the ideals of the revolution
