2. 3 appeals of argument: Logos: appeal to logic Ethos: appeal to ethics Pathos: appeal to emotions
3. Consider your PURPOSE To persuade the reader to..._____________. (change a behavior, take an action) *Your audience is always the OPPOSITION (a tough crowd!)
4. State your PURPOSE and CLAIM What message do you want to communicate? What side do you take on the issue? Both of these should be clear in the intro!
5. Organize Your Support Use facts and expert testimony. These are hard to fight against. Consider the paragraph order... climactic order: building from the weakest point to the strongest point problem/solution order: define the problem, then offer 1 or more solutions counterargument order: organize by the points of the opposition. “Shoot them down” one by one.
6. Don’t be afraid to use concession. (admit that the opposition has a point) It makes you look honest, trustworthy. Avoid logical fallacies. (see chapter 2)
