GREEN HOUSE FARMING

Definition:-
A greenhouse (also called a glasshouse,
or, if with sufficient heating, a hothouse) is a
structure with walls and roof made chiefly of
transparent material, such as glass, in
which plants requiring regulated climatic
conditions are grown
Green house – a quick review…
 Green house is a house with protection
boundaries which allows only sunlight
and no other outside environmental
factor to enter.
History
The idea of growing plants in
environmentally controlled areas has existed
since Roman times. There were serious
problems with providing adequate and
balanced heat in these early greenhouses.
Today, the Netherlands has many of the largest
greenhouses in the world, some of them so
vast that they are able to produce millions of
vegetables every year.

How it works?
 The warmer temperature in a greenhouse is that incident solar
radiation (the visible and adjacent portions of
the infrared and ultraviolet ranges of the spectrum) passes
through the glass roof and walls and is absorbed by the floor,
earth, and contents, which become warmer and re-emit the
energy as longer-wavelength infrared radiation.
 Glass and other materials used for greenhouse walls do not
transmit infrared radiation, so the infrared cannot escape
via radiative transfer. As the structure is not open to the
atmosphere, heat also cannot escape via convection, so the
temperature inside the greenhouse rises.
Plants that grow easily in our
greenhouse…
Cucumber
 Tomatoes
Peppers
Citrus fruits
Grapes
 Strawberries
Cucumber  You must have been grown
up eating cucumber salads
or even the raw pieces with
salt. They taste simply
wonderful – however,
growing them is not that
simple. You need to shrink
wrap them so that their
freshness can be retained
after harvesting.
Tomatoes  Most of the greenhouses
have tomatoes in various
colors and shapes – they are
easy to handle specially the
beefsteak varieties.
Peppers
 Peppers are loved all over
the world – they simply
make the dishes tastier. To
your surprise, there is a
great variety of peppers that
you can easily grow in your
greenhouse. They have
light to intense taste and
colors are mind-blowing.
Citrus fruits
 You can grow a number of
winter fruits in your
greenhouse – these include
sweet and sour, delicious
looking melons, oranges
and lemons. They have the
ability to sustain even the
coldest weather, so enjoy
your winter evenings with
juicy fruits.
Grapes
 Many do not know that the
grapes can even be grown
in the greenhouse – many
free greenhouse plans can
highlight details for you.
You have to protect them
from pests and take special
care of the varieties like
“black ham burgh” and
“Buckland Sweetwater”.
Strawberries
 Fill your greenhouse with
tasty strawberries this
season – you can grow
whatever type you want.
Just make sure you provide
them with sufficient space
and ventilation.
Ventilation
 Ventilation is one of the most important components in a
successful greenhouse. If there is no proper ventilation,
greenhouses and their growing plants can become prone to
problems.
 The main purposes of ventilation are to regulate the
temperature and humidity.
 Ventilation ensures a supply of fresh air for photosynthesis
and plant respiration, and may enable
important pollinators to access the greenhouse crop.
 Ventilation can be achieved via use of vents - often
controlled automatically via a computer - and recirculation
fans.
USES
 Greenhouses allow for greater control over the
growing environment of plants.
 Greenhouses are increasingly important in the
food supply of high-latitude countries.
 Greenhouses are often used for
growing flowers, vegetables, fruits,
and transplants. Special greenhouse varieties
of certain crops, such as tomatoes, are
generally used for commercial production.
ADVANTAGES:-
Manipulation of growing season.
Efficient use of irrigation water.
Infestation of pests and diseases is
eliminated.
Higher value and higher quality crops can
be grown.
