2. One of the magazine adverts I have chose to study is Jessie J advertising her new
album ‘who you are’ from the ‘Q’ magazine, I used lacey's repertoire of elements to do
so.
The reason I chose to analyse this advert due to the engaging features, its very dark and
mysterious however has Jessie Js name in gold which contrasts against the black and
stands out.
The target audience for this magazine advert is most probably teenagers of both genders
however probably more to females. The traditional use of colours shows that it is not
targeted towards any particular gender for example a magazine advert targeted towards
females would be more female orientated colours such as pink. The use of black, white
and gold contrast against one and other and are very neutral.
This advert stands out in a
magazine due to the large font
‘Jessie J’ directly in the middle of
the page. it also stands out as it’s
a symmetrical picture.
3. The mise en scene of the magazine is very engaging.
Costume and Makeup
Jessie Js costume is very dark and mysterious, similar to her makeup.
Stereotypically, girls wear makeup, however not in this manner, makeup is portrayed to
be subtle or red lips, where as in this case, jessie Js makeup is extremely dark. She
looks slightly scary compared to other artists such as Rihanna and
Kylie Monogue. Her lips have a gold pattern on them matching
the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine advert.
Her eye makeup emphasises the fierce look on her face. The black
themed makeup on her face match her black nails and her black hair.
Its clear that Jessie J is not happy in this photo.
Her face is very symmetric with the use of makeup along with her fringe which
is also straight and symmetric.
MISE EN SCENE
SETTING
4. Lighting
Although her outfit is very dark. The black contrasts with the use of gold and the
lighting within the photo therefore her face and hands are very high key.
Colour scheme
There are only 3 main colours within the magazine article, black, white and gold.
The main colour in the article is black as Jessie Js hair, nails and lips are black,
along with dark nails and a black box at the bottom of
the page where all of the text is displayed on, due to
the black background, the gold and white contrast
against one and other and create more attention.
Proxemics
In the music magazine article, Jessie J is the only character on the page, her stance
and pose shows her to be very angry and fierce, her pose is symmetrical which is
very eye catching for the viewer.
5. CHARACTER
Jessie J is the only person shown on the magazine advert, this is because she is a solo
artist. Her makeup and pose suggests anger and darkness, she looks fierce and like she
is seeking revenge, her signature hair style of a short black bob makes the audience
recognise her instantly, the image is very symmetric, her fringe and hands and eyes each
match and it is very eye catching.
Jessie J looks very focused in the image, her eyes are squinting like she is trying to work
something out and are emphasised by the black themed makeup on her face which
matches her nails and hair. She comes across slightly scary compared to other artists. Her
lips have a gold pattern on them matching
the colourscheme, these patterned lips
are iconic of Jessie J, she has a range of
styles with patterns on her lips.
The magazine article is clearly showing
Jessie J to be unhappy.
6. Jessie Js signature hair style of a short bob makes the audience recognise her instantly,
her fringe almost covers her eyes suggesting mystery. The black really emphasizes
darkness within Jessie j, it suggests she is angry or fierce and is represented to be quite
gothic due to her makeup and hair, her style makes her unique and It breaks the view on
stereotypical pop singers such as katy perry as colours which are suggested and
stereotypical towards pop music are pink and bright colours.
7. NARRATIVE
The purpose and narrative events within the magazine advert is that she is
trying to gain more listeners for her music, as the colours in the magazine
advert are dark and black, it suggests the songs on the album may be dark
and cover issues and topics in which are serious, and from my own
knowledge, i know some songs from Jessie J are about bullying and being
who you are.
8. ICONOGRAPHY
The gold and black colours on the magazine advert symbolise anger and success
Jessie Js hair style is considered an icon of herself to other people, no celebrities
in her category have a similar hair style. Similar to the way she wears dark
makeup, its very rare that she is seen with bright makeup, however, another iconic
feature of Jessie j, shown in the magazine article is the way in which she has
patterns on her lips, In this case her lips are
black with a gold pattern on them. Jessie j
has been seen with a range of different
patterns upon her lips and strange colours
such as white, some examples shown below:
9. TECHNICAL CODES
The advert is laid out with a strong, large image of Jessie J that takes up the majority
of the album making her the centre of attention, it has no props not background setting
such as a beach.
The strong and fierce image of the artist is used to spark a reaction from the target
audience. The image is a close up of the artist centralised with symmetry. There is
emphasis on her eyes within the image as they have been sharpened to enhance the
fierce and strong facial expression which makes her look confident.
Her name and the album name are positioned within the middle of the advert so that
the audiences attention is immediately drawn towards it aswell as the fact the text is
printed over the top of the image, The name is striking and intriguing as it is in the
colour gold. The gold text also contrasts with her cold earings and gold printing on her
black lips. The typography is gold which gives and idea that she is successful as gold
indicated superiority. As there is not much text nor information given on the magazine
advert, people are able to read it quickly and not get bored.
10. A well known song is used to promote the album, so people who like the song but
maybe don’t know much about Jessie j or her other songs will be interested.
Having the website for the artist enables fans to find out more if they wanted to and
access the information about the album and herself. Aswell as the website, another
artist is mentioned in the advert, someone who features on a song with her, this
widens the target audience so that fans of ‘B.O.B’ will also read the article and
possibly buy the album.
